Am I a traitor? (The Last of Us vs TWDG)

So I recently sold my Xbox and my huge collection of games simply to get a PS3 and The Last of Us and I'm ashamed to say that, even just halfway through, I'm starting to like it even more than TWDG as a game overall at least. Whether the story's superior is highly debatable, though I'd say the writing's very close to Telltale's level of quality and the voice actors are just incredible.

I don't want this to be a thread filled with hate and rivalry. It's obvious the vast majority are going to praise The Walking Dead more but hell, if you've got a PS3, you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing this game. It's amazing. To those that have played both, what did you like in one game compared to the other? Would be interesting to see what people's opinions are.

I know the game's are very different in terms of how they're done but that doesn't mean they can't be compared at all, considering they both involve caring for a young girl in a post-apocalyptic environment, and follow similar themes.

  • Its better as a game, I dont know about storywise. also the budget for that game was way bigger

  • Lol? I've posted regularly on this forum since August and I'm an avid fan of TWD. I fail to see how I'm a troll. When you like a game, there's no requirement to get your jimmies royally rustled when someone compares it with something else. I bought the game a couple days ago. I'm simply expressing my love for it seeing as I know any fan of The Walking Dead would likely also enjoy TLoU.

I wanted some decent discussion, not this idiotic bullshit. The ignorance steaming off of your comment is very amusing.

Yeah, well, it's a better game, can't argue with that. That is because it is an actual game and not a interactive movie (this isn't meant to be down-putting the game in any way, it's just a fact).

I still like the story of TWD better and think the characters are much better.

But TLOU also has a fairly good story aswell.

  • I was just thinking about creating an Ellie and Clementine comparison thread. The two games (now three with season 2 out) are very similar in how they tell their stories and develop their characters. Gameplay is obviously much different though as Last of Us is more of a shooter while TWD is a point and click game where you get to occasionally choose how characters will respond.

If we just compare storyline elements (as that is the only thing that can be compared) I think Last of Us has slightly better character development but TWD has an overall better plot. Ellie in my opinion has the best character development of any character ever created for a video game and her relationship with Joel is very heartwarming. However the plot of TLOU still fell into the very generic 'save the world' story that many video games have. While TWDG was a very comforting plot of characters just trying to survive in an apocalyptic world.

Also TWDG does a much better job of leaving room for expasion than TLOU did. At the end of TLOU you are just kind of wondering 'well what do we do now and is there even anymore room for future stories with these characters.'

Also the final verdict for me on why I personally choose the TWDG plot over TLOU is the fact that TWDG will have three games out in three years while NaughtyDog is busy trying to put together a movie of their game instead of focusing on making an actual sequel. So TWDG could potentially have four games on shelves (if they decide to go further than just a trilogy) by the time TLOU even starts to get around to creating a second game (and there is no guarantee that a second Last of Us game will ever be made).

  • Thanks for commenting. This is the type of thoughtful post I hoped this thread would generate! I agree with you on pretty much everything too.

  • i have played both and both games made me cry unlike other games tend to be able to. Game play wise i would definately have to say that TLOU wins simply by nature. I personally prefer TWDG for its atmosphere and being based on the comics, as i prefer this universe and find it more immersive.

However i find it very hard to say anything negative about TLOU as it was a digital masterpiece in my eyes. The way i got into the character development was definately on par with TWDG but it also brought a fun stealth, apocalypse, survival, shooter style gameplay aspect that was very enjoyable. Truthfully, personally, the only thing that makes TWDG better or even hold a torch to TLOU is the IP and the fact that it is the walking dead. TLOU has more play time, better graphics, and actual gameplay which in my opinion makes it the superior game if we are not talking about the universes the games are based in.

  • The first season of TWD and TLOU are on an even par. I've yet to finish season 2.

I've played TLOU and TWDG, and both are amazing and heartbreaking, I did put them high atop my-best-games-list without hesitation. Problem is, people keep comparing them and stubbornly trying to decide which game is better. It's competelly unnecessary IMO. Each story is unique - even though both relate to a similar topic - and should be judged differently, mainly because the game itself is created primarily by feelings and emotions that accompany us while experiencing it.

No, you're not a traitor. It's your own opinion and you have all the rights to think whatever you want.

  • well, i did think Tlou was a little better, but your not a traitor to telltale or us, No, your betraying clemycloo (not me) and she is already lonely without lee.

  • I have played TLoU and I think it is a great game. However story wise I think TWD is a better game but TLoU is an amazing game worth trying.

  • Both are great games and good for you that you can experience both amazing stories. Obviously you'll have one preference over the other as they can seem very similar when it comes to story (I know I did playing through TLOU after playing TWD). For me I just kept in mind that TLOU had a huge budget, a gargantuan amount of people working on it (have you seen that credit list!) and was re-made for improvement on the PS4, but Telltale is an indie company that made a very successful game that no one saw coming. We can only hope that other game devs aspire to write and create games of this quality despite time or money.

Favorite thing about both games is the voice acting. If you think about it, it's people just playing pretend, but they do a magnificent job at it.

  • Heck yes. The Last of Us is a great game. Check out the Uncharted series as well, made by Naughty Dog. The story doesn't go as deep as the Joel/Ellie relationship but it is just as immersive and more fast paced.

Both The Walking Dead (Season 1) and The Last of Us do a wonderful job in making us care for the protagonists. Just like the Lee/Clem relationship, we care for Joel/Ellie as well. Add on the fact that Clementine and Ellie aren't useless, say like Ashley from Resident Evil 4, but helpful and distinct individuals with unique personalities and it just makes them that much more likable.

In terms of gameplay, The Last of Us wins hands down. Tense stealth moments, that feeling when there's a room of clickers in front of you, you have no ammo, and you have to sneak past them. Emotional moments (both good and bad). Different weapons that you can craft and upgrade like the molotov or the bomb. Worthwhile companions who will aid you. (Tess and Ellie).

In terms of story, I'd have to say The Walking Dead (Season 1) wins. Spectacular characterization. We can influence what certain people think about us (Lilly and Kenny). We can make Lee a complete nice guy, or a complete scumbag. And the Lee/Clem relationship was what drove the narrative. We could see how she was struggling to hold this optimistic, view of the world, that things would get better as everything just got worse and worse.

I agree with fallandir. It's your opinion and you should have the right to express it.

And I consider both games to be modern-works of art. I love both of them equally. There's no need to compare them. Let's just say that both are awesome games.

  • Thanks for your input. c: Both are without a doubt high in the list of the best games ever made.

  • You're welcome, friend. :) You said you like voice acting, then I recommend you to watch "One night live", it's a performance of key scenes featuring the voice actors, musicans (TLoU has great sountrack btw) and game developers.

TLOU was the first game that I actually felt was worth my money other then TWDG.

    No you're not a traitor :3

  • You're not a traitor, but I have to disagree. I felt TLOU is pretty overrated, sure it was a GREAT game, but the combat system was extremely boring to me and there was just too much of it for it to come even close to TWDG, and the ending really isn't anything to write home about either.

  • TLOU is a AAA survival game with AAA developers + funds
I don't know if I can say the same for TWDG.

Both games are awesome, obviously TLOU has a much for in-depth feel than TWDG, and both have fantastic storytelling.

Both of those games should be the new standard on what zombie/survival games should be. You can't go wrong with either one.

  • Actually. That's not the case. The term "peasant" means that you think consoles are superior to PC. So really , he's not a peasant.

  • I think TLoU is in a way more immersive than TWDG because of the graphics and having complete control of the characters in combat and movement, but then that's balanced out by the ability to tailor dialogue you have in TWDG.

  • TLOU gameplay is boring to me, the story is great, and it touches sensitive subjects. But god is Ellie annoying.

  • Ehh, annoying, maybe. I see her as just funny and freakin' awesome. xd

  • In my opinion TLOU is over-hyped to death. Its no where near as good games like GTA 5, but people still sing its praises. The combat is clunky button spam, the AI is brain dead. I don't remember struggling through this game once.

Is it a bad game no. Its good, to me the ending felt sequel bait. Personally i wouldn't of bought a console for this, I would give it a 7/10.

  • I agree, TWDG is a lot better because i actually cared about some characters sort of, TLOU, never did that.

Try playing on hard. The AI's phenomenal compared to other games, and it takes me multiple tries to get past a single sequence seeing as I like to kill everyone rather than stealth (Coming from someone whose played games for years and isn't inexperienced).

GTA 5 has inferior combat and AI to The Last of Us without a doubt. Not saying it's bad; its strengths lie in the incredible free-roaming and the wealth of activities available to the player.

TWDG Season 1's ending was sequel bait. Doesn't detract from anything, however.

  • no this game is great, is FANTASTIC. it is the better game but still the WD game (s1&s2, i count them both as one game) is the better story. now i share my love for the game recently here cuz lets be honest this is a better forum.

I gave both games an A+, and titled them the best games I've played for their respective years. Your opinion is your opinion, and anyone who gets butthurt over you liking this game more than TWD should get that stick out of their ass pronto. I don't think you're a traitor. :)

Although I do have to say, I like The Walking Dead a bit more. :)

  • Ehh, dude... Sit in a gun store. Literally, sit in a gun store in GTA and aim at the door. Shoot every cop that moves through that door. The police will keep sending them again and again, and do not even think to fall back. Eventually you have a retarded pile of bodies.

Now try doing that in TLoU.

    Mhm.
