Lilly's backstory

I have a question about Lilly's backstory. I know that Lilly from the first game was originally supposed to be the same Lilly from the comics until the Road to Woodbury came out. After that the Lilly from the game was just an entirely different person from the comics.

So my question is why did Kirkman allow Telltale to use Lilly's character if he intended to tell her story through other avenues. It is a little odd because The Road to Woodbury and the first game both came out around the same time and the stories likely were being developed around the same time as well. Was their just not any communication between the two sides and they didn't know what the other was doing or did Telltale put Lilly in the game fully knowing that a book was coming out telling her backstory as well?

  • I'm pretty sure I might get some of this wrong...

Telltale initially wanted game Lilly to be comic Lilly and shaped her as such. However Kirkman didn't like this and told them to change it, of which began the separation of the Lillies. After that order from Kirkman, the two characters are different.

  • Hmm, I'm surprised Telltale didn't just give her an entirely different name then.

  • I don't think her last name is ever said and when I said Kirkman said no, he said that around like the end of E1 or E2. So they can't change that once the first couple of episodes had happened.

  • Oh ok. If he didn't say no until the episodes were already being released than they definitely wouldn't have been able to change anything. Doesn't sound like there was a whole lot of communication going on between Kirkman and Telltale during the story planning stages.

  • Actually they are not the same person at all. The Lilly from The Road to Woodbury and Fall of the Governor part 1 and 2 is the Lilly from the comic and she has a completely different backstory from the Lilly in the game. At the time the events from the game were taking place the Lilly from the comic was in an entirely different location.

  • Sort of... but yeah, that's basically the story.

  • It seems like Kirkman did not like nor trust the game, which could be understandable if he never actually played the game. It could also be that Kirkman had the mentality that he alone should be the one to develop the characters in his comics and books, and thought a video game company couldn't achieve his level of writing expertise.

Personally, I love the video game Lilly much better. Comic and book Lilly seemed bland and uninteresting.

  • To each their own but I personally think Telltale did a mediocre at best job with all the comic characters in the first game. They honestly all just seemed shoehorned in there to help make the game sell better. They did a much better job in my opinion with their original characters they created for the game. They should have just left all the comic characters out in my opinion.

  • Telltale stated that they want to keep some character's fates in Season 1 and Season 2 forever unknown.
