Removing them to stop trolls from engaging in their activities and force at least some of them to have an actual discussion? Maybe. Removing the downvote button because it intimidated people from speaking up? Now, that may not be the problem of trolls, in that particular case.
It isn't the problem of trolls, but it isn't conducive to a friendly community, which is what we want.
Also, removing the downvote option isn't removing freedom of speech any more than not having a button to say 'I found your post funny' or 'this post is confusing' is. I'm not sure if you were trying to say it was, though, that was just an assumption, so apologies if I misunderstood.
Did I ever say you did say that or something?
I assumed you has misunderstood me as it seemed odd to point out something in a discussion which we both already know.
Well, shutting people up when they say something you, or anyone else for that matter, don't like isn't the best solution, either.
Depends what they're saying. I think verbal harassment is shit, and shutting people up and telling people that they can't do it is a good thing.
Not seemed. Did. Puzzlebox mentioned that people had spoken to her about being afraid to express their opinions right before they removed th… moree buttons.
Yeah, I remember something like that being mentioned.
If there was no point to seeing who downvotes it and only to seeing who comments, removing them was a good idea no?

We don't have none of it, nor did I ever say that we should.
Did I ever say you did say that or something?
Freedom of speech shouldn't exist. We have to limit what people can say in some situations for the wellbeing of others.
Well, shutting people up when they say something you, or anyone else for that matter, don't like isn't the best solution, either.
Which group was shut up?
Oh, you don't know? All these so called "downvote brigades", "immature Kenny fans", etc.
I see differ… moreent opinions posted here all the time, it's excellent.
Not always.
Also, freedom of speech doesn't - and shouldn't - exist.
Yup, and that is why you are so glad to see "different opinions posted here all the time", right? Ah, well.
The choice isn't between freedom of speech and harassment, or no harassment and no freedom of speech at all. It's on sliders.
The ideal of freedom of speech - that people should be legally allowed to say whatever they want - is ridiculous. People suffer from extreme mental health issues often because of nothing but words.
Freedom of Speech isn't Verbal Harassment,
but will cause verbal harassment.
Much like the Social Media, it's one of the reasons why we … moreare up to date with news all over the world, but it also destroy's other people image.
Everything has a positive and negative outcome.
All I did was joke and you said you would flag me. I found that offensive. I didn't continue to say I would do something but you kept insisting you would flag me over a little poke. You need to realize not everyone has negative intentions and are out to get you. You completely blew up on me for the tiniest joke. You're just too sensitive about it. You need to realize I had no attention in trolling you. You know what.... I'm just gonna stop.
Now I ask you again to please, please leave me the fuck alone.
In what way was I harassing you? I hardly think saying I would report you if you break the rules of the forum - in the same way I would call… more the police if you broke the law - is harassment.
Intent to annoy/harm is irrelevant. What matters is the actual effect the action has.

So, you were afraid to post due to some bunch of immature pricks downvoting you? Why, I wonder? They didn't have the decency to engage in an actual discussion, so why give their actions power? If they intimidate you from speaking up, you've already lost. The best thing to do is to ignore them.
But, doesn't matter, the downvote button is gone, and now everyone can post without a fear of harassment... Or can they?

I was afraid to post because of the down vote button, I posted two comments in Nov. 2013 and got attacked with down votes and got bullied off the site. I was lurking of awhile, but Last year these forums were a mess. I started commenting several months ago as soon as the down vote button was removed.
So, the down vote button was pretty much gave the trolls power, and I didn't like it. I kept lurking until the button was removed. I didn't want to feel like garbage when I posted so I just waited.
Edit: Yes, nobody would actually engage in discussion because of that devil button.

I'm going to ask that you guys end this conversation/argument here. Please try to stay on topic. Thanks!
(This isn't a warning towards Tobi in particular, this is an open warning to others as well. I'm just replying to Tobi's comment.)

It isn't the problem of trolls, but it isn't conducive to a friendly community, which is what we want.
Friendly to users, but unfriendly to "trolls and bullies", right? And where are the lines for those drawn, I wonder?
Also, removing the downvote option isn't removing freedom of speech any more than not having a button to say 'I found your post funny' or 'this post is confusing' is. I'm not sure if you were trying to say it was, though, that was just an assumption, so apologies if I misunderstood.
Yes, I was trying to say exactly that. I definitely agree that many people were abusing it when they shouldn't have, but other people who were using it for its actual purpose, i. e. expressing disagreement while not having need to, for example, post on a thread they personally find displeasing or to talk to a person they've clashed with and are having a mutual dislike towards. Taking freedom of speech from bullies and trolls and harassers, etc, also takes it from someone who isn't any of those.
I assumed you has misunderstood me as it seemed odd to point out something in a discussion which we both already know.
I didn't point out anything of the sort. I was just quoting you to explain the point I made in that paragraph better.
Depends what they're saying. I think verbal harassment is shit, and shutting people up and telling people that they can't do it is a good thing.
Again, where the line for "going a bit over the top" and "making a harassment" is drawn? If you can shut some people up, you can shut up everyone in that case. Tell me if that isn't totalitarianism in a nutshell.

Oh shit, devious thoughts are popping up. [attempts to reach out for the gif-that-must-not-be-named]
Good plan not to. I shall report anyone who does for trolling.
Eh. Not that I am encouraging it in any sense of the word, but I think if it was done ironically and only once, it wouldn't be too bad. It's only an offense when people spam them a ton - be it ironic or not.

Oh my god the gifs.
Don't remind me. I was just starting to get over my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that the gifs caused.
I r… moreemember internally panicking about how bad the forums would be to moderate when I played Episode 202 and found out Kenny returned. :P
You can't censor what people say on the internet. Its a never ending job that will never be done, you might as well master the concept of not engaging discussions you find offensive. Just my opinion.
Limiting what people say is ridiculous too.
What if someone-- who is actually being bullied and then say: "Hey! You are bullies."
The bullied has said something that verbally harms the other, it'll be a never-ending cycle.
I was around from time to time, but the forum didn't look like an encouraging place to me. I decided to stay for good after S2E3 was released. I like this community a lot, though.
I remember that as well, but this place wasn't the same when porn trolls attacked.........
You were here when that happened? God, I'm happy the old forum days are over.
Honestly, reacting to those trolls by shying away from them is exactly what they would have wanted. But, I ain't here to lecture you on what you should have done, or how you should have acted.
No, not really. Getting the results they wanted was the thing that gave them power. Downvote button was only their tool.
And that's where I disagree, yet again. Many people were downvoted for their opinions, but they didn't stop from expressing them further and continuously. So, the problem, in my opinion, doesn't lie in the trolls only.

This place definitely improved after S2E2 was released (weeks later). I like this place more now, and I think the new members are better than the most of the old trolly ones.

We don't really have any way of knowing if it is posted ironically or in order to annoy, however.
The only person who knows is the person who posts.
Surely it would be an offense - that is to say, the forum's rules would be broken - if it was posted in order to troll even once?
The spamming rules are related to frequency, I'm not sure trolling rules are.
Don't remind me. I was just starting to get over my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that the gifs caused.
I remember internally panicking about how bad the forums would be to moderate when I played Episode 202 and found out Kenny returned. :P

Please try to keep discussion civil, guys! Thanks!
I put down the controller and said 'oh please no', thinking of how irritating the forums would become.
And hey, we were right, judging by the actions of kenny and luke fans throughout the season, and kenny and jane fans at the very end. :P

This one for you.
You can by banning them if they continue to say those things.
So you think verbal harassment should not be illegal?
That's a form of bullying, there's a law for that.
I dropped the forums for a bit during S2E3, but returned when "Amid the Ruins" I came back.
This place definitely improved after S2E2 was released (weeks later). I like this place more now, and I think the new members are better than the most of the old trolly ones.
There are countless ways to bypass a ban, even an IP ban.
I agree, I fed the trolls by shying away but I'm not a fan of being bullied. So I kinda just stop stopped posting.
