Ah man, Omid's death was spoiled for me before I started playing S2. So probably the usuals; Carley and Nick (just turn the corner and he's already turned). I thought Carlos and Katjaa would die by the end of their respective seasons but not when they both did.
I didn't think it was stupid as I have no idea how ice works (ironic as I am Canadian and my brothers are hockey fanatics) and I was in agreement with the plan. That said they really could have at least taken a bit of time to look for a different path.
-It takes a couple weeks for the ice to get thick enough to be walked on safely...ish, the thickness of it varies in areas and depending on what the ice looks like, you can tell if it's walkable.
-It's not that easy to run on ice, maybe if there's snow it'll give you a bit of grip though. Although snow can work like an insulation and heat up the ice and if it isn't thick enough, boom, trouble.
-If the ice is cracking under you or feels weak, you have to spread your weight out. Standing up straight puts a lot of weight on one small area, so laying on your stomach and crawling along is your best bet.
-If someone falls in, going over to go pull them out is useless because they'll just end up pulling you in or more of the ice will break up near the hole and you'll fall in anyway. Best thing to do is to find rope [even one made out of coats or shirts] or something you can help pull them out with.
-It's near impossible to get out of that water by yourself, some people carry a pair of ice picks attach to some material hung around their neck so they can use them to pull themselves out from where they came [since that's the ice that was able to hold your weight before you fell in] and then roll away to safety.
-None of the things above are used when the group crosses the ice, and i'm not even an ice expert.
-Also it's a lake with an obvious route around it, there's no reason to be out there. x_x

Honestly, the river looked like it bent around the treeline and continued into the distance. Regardless, they could have done with a real reason to cross it then and there: walkers start boxing them in, a snowstorm about to hit them, AJ starts crying and attracting everything to their position, etc.
Well, from what I know:

At first I thought it was a river, which was understandable why they would cross it but then I realised it was a lake and they could have gone around. I kept shouting at my screen for them to crawl across it. :P

This is The Walking Dead, major characters die all the time, whether it be comics, T.V. show, or game, major characters are just as likely to die as any other character.
At least Luke knows now how Sarah feels during her second death. A painful death that could have been avoided if Telltale didn't make the group do such boneheaded decisions just to get someone killed off.
And is it a coincidence that Jane just so happened to indirectly get someone killed because of what she says? First Sarah, now Luke.

I think it is a lake because it stops and bends around. If it was a river then it wouldn't have been that deep to start and it would have an entry/exit point.
it does have places it actually continues off to. they're not easy to see, but they're there. here's a small map to give the basic idea of the layout:
Red X is where we start crossing it, blue X is roughly where Luke falls in, and the yellow X is the house. The green represents the treelines.
It has a really narrow bend on the left side:
with a somewhat larger bend curving around the tree-line to the right:
Futhermore, as mentioned, this lake is seen in episode 4:
There's also a map of said river in the episode itself. Take notice that it's actually labeled as the "Grand River". It only makes sense that the point in which they cross it would be a continuation of this river. Also, in game, the river flows from right to left. Surely that means it must be coming from where they cross it in episode 5, right?

Wow. Well I guess the whole 'crossing' the body of water is understandable again. Are rivers really that deep? A lake should be that deep but a river shouldn't be that deep right? I guess it depends what course of the river it is. Jane did mention how the next river crossing is miles up maybe they did cross it and this is a lake but I have no idea. :P

I was more disappointed then shocked by Nick's death. The way Telltale just killed him off like that was pretty lazy. And by the time he died I didn't really care that much because he'd pretty much had no part in the third episode anyway.
Probably Carley's second death when she's shot by Lilly. And Nick's. I knew he was going to die eventually but it was surprising just to see him stuck on a fence.
Comments
Notice that nobody has mentioned a few other characters:
Sarita's death surprised me- like most people I chose to cut off the arm, so when she died immediately after I was a bit shocked.
The way Walter died was also a bit surprising. I mean I thought he'd die, but I was shocked by the way it happened.
I was actually surprised a bit by Rebecca's death. I hadn't expected her to just die and turn so quickly without anyone noticing.
BAM!

I guess duck, i never really thought when playing S1 they would make us kill a child.

Do not even get me started on how stupid this moment was.

It reminded me of that commercial where the people are making the bad decisions in the horror movie.
[Points up to CrazyGeorge's comment on the commercial] that stupid =.=

Ok... ok. It was stupid... only a little though. Right?

Luke.
It wasn't 'unexpected', it was more like 'They actually killed him off? I thought he was (supposed to be) a major character.'
What else is on the wall of shame? I've got another one that might make it onto the wall of shame.

It's definitely a river, not a lake. You see it throughout episode 4, its runs right next to the civil war ruins/observation deck.
