Will we ever get anything as good as S1 ever again?

Season 2 sucked pretty hard, even when not compared to Season 1. I'm not going to beat whatever's left of the dead horse but needless to say Telltale should be a little embarrassed and change the writing and head writers up. TWAU gave me hope but it was too short. I like how in newer releases like TFBL and GOT the episodes are longer but its gotta be more if its going to match S1

  • Hey look it's another one of these topics. Hooray for opinions!

  • Will we ever get anything as good as S1 ever again?

No, Season 1 was a masterpiece, and even if Vanaman and Rodkin stayed on for Season 2, Season 2 still wouldn't have been as good as Season 1 was, and no Telltale game in the future will probably ever beat Season 1. Personally, I liked Season 2, Season 1 is still better, but Season 2 is a great sequel to the original. And just because nothing will probably beat Season 1 doesn't mean Telltale won't create great games in the future. Hell, if Stirpe and Petty have nothing do to with Season 3, I have no doubt Season 3 will be great, Breckon is a fine writer on his own to carry the torch.

  • A game with no Clem or Nate and following Mike and Arvo? Not starting out strong for me

  • Thats where you're wrong if I was bashing it I would be ranting and raving about S2. What I'm asking is if anything Telltale could make anything that matches it

Season 1 was best, season 2 was awesome. I don't care if season 3 isn't as good as 1 and 2, they'll still be seasons 1,2,3 of the best game ever!

  • Season 3 has potential with the different endings

  • Honestly I don't ever think Telltale will match up with the Season 1 performance, everything in that season was good, the writing, the emotional effect on characters, the voice acting.. Everything was good in that season.

I have potential that season 3 could get up to their standard though with the 5 different endings. They messed up on the season before and we all know that but since they messed up on that season and we always talk about it I think that they know what to fix, and with the season 1 amazing response then they just have to do what they did in season 1 and just take out the bad things in season 2 and BOOM season 3 is the best season out of the trilogy.. If you're comparing them to like TWAU and GOT and shit then well, I don't know what to say.

I am like you, I like how how they have been making longer episodes in newer games like GOT and TFBL I like that because then we get to have more time with the characters we are playing as/ interacting with.

I really do hope that season 3 tops season 1 and season 2, but I don't know I just hope they don't throw the 5 different endings away in the first 15 minutes and go their own way because that is not the way to go Telltale... Have a nice day :)

  • Probably. Probably not. Either way I like all of TT's games.

  • I don't know. Let me put it this way - I believe that it's possible for Telltale Games to create something as good as season 1 or even better BUT it'll be a challenge for them considering that season 1 was... I'm sorry, iS a masterpiece. :) Or at least it's awesome IMO. Season 3 has a potential. It's always possible that it can be as good as season 1 but it's too soon to say anyting because we even don't know what the story will be, what characters we'll see, what will happen or even who will be PC.

But yeah - it's possible that season 3 might be as good as season 1 or better, though it's too soon to tell anything about that.

  • Telltale has never let me down before, I said this in another post, but I hand't played TFBL and I bought that and played it and I loved it, I love all of Telltales games starting from Season 1 of TWD ending with Tale From Borderlands..

Even if season 3 isn't as good as season 1 which I don't think it will, it might, it definetely has potential with the different endings and all - but other than that I don' think anything will ever beat season 1. Sorry guys.

    Have a good one :)

As a full package? Maybe not. But there's a lot of individual moments throughout Season 2, Wolf, and the premieres of GoT and Tales that stand up to the quality of S1's best scenes.

As far as games made by Telltale other than Walking Dead, that all depends on opinion. People can find S2 better than S1, people can find Wolf Among Us, Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones, or hell, even Telltale Texas Hold Em' better than S1.

As far as Walking Dead games by Telltale, I doubt we will get another one that gave me the same emotional feeling and attachment to the characters like S1 did. May be too early to judge S3 like that but I doubt it tbh.

  • Nope. As far as I can tell S1 was a fluke.

  • It was too good to be a fluke. I hope its not Telltale's one hit wonder

S1 did one thing notably wrong: it set the bar--and by result, our standards--way too high

Nothing will ever come as close to it if you keep convincing yourself that nothing can come that close to it

  • So its over rating it? I'm sorry but even when nit compared by S1 Season 2 just seems poor. Even games with hardly any choices mattering (like any of the Quantic Dream Games) seem to blow S2 out of the water

  • I believe the sun is the closest star to Earth, but if another one suddenly appears closer to Earth then I will admit that the other one is closer. If another season proves to be better than S1 then I will admit it with nothing but a sincere smile.

  • the real fucking question here is... is there anything that TT can match ANY moment or bring something as memorable, doesnt have to be emotional, as the ending of S1??? mmm no, hell i dont see any game ever doing that, and if it is something emotional i just dont think anything, whatever it is, can ever do it.

  • Many people liked Season 2 more than Season 1, it's all about opinions.

  • edited January 2015

I doubt it will ever be as good as Season 1 was, with the well-balanced characters and illusion of choice which actually felt like choice (even when there really wasnt any). It WAS a great example of game storytelling. There was also a definite goal - the boat. Clem finding her parents. Savannah. Season 2, the 'goal' was not there until season 5, and by then it seemed rushed and poorly done. The characters were inconsistent, and the choices did not give any real 'illusion of choice' - it felt railroaded.

That being said, Season 2 was not terrible - it just was unfortunately following in the shadow of Season 1, which was a masterpiece. They could always learn from Season 2's problems and make a really good Season 3. It might still not be as good as Season 1, but it would be much better than Season 2.

Think of it like... Indiana Jones movies, or Back to the Future movies. The first movie was great. The second was ... not so good. Maybe not awful, but not good - especially when compared to the first movie. Then they learned from it and didn't repeat the problems of the second movie, and made a good third movie - it still wasnt as good as the first one, which was both good AND novel... but it was still a great movie, and made you forgive the second movie's failings.

I can think of several parts of Season 2 which were quite good.

Clem and Sam - it was so sad, but emotionally powerful

Clem seeing Kenny for the first time - how many people were so happy there was the [Hug Kenny] option?

Clem climbing the tower while talking to Luke - I thought it was so funny.

Clem and Luke fighting the walkers on the bridge - very good action for a game like this.

Clem showing growth - Clem is quite possibly the best thing about Season 2. Even though I loved her in Season 1 as well.... her killing the zombie in the shed and then saying 'Still. Not. Bitten.' is the epitome of badassdom.

So Season 2 had its good points - it's just the last two episodes that were really problematic, because it all seemed rushed by that point. Probably would have been better if they had another 5 episodes to flesh out characters, make the decisions have more 'illusion of choice'... maybe make the deaths not quite as dumb in several cases - especially Sarah's, who should have had an option where Jane could have saved her (which would make Jane a more sympathetic and human character, since she would have been capable of doing good and thinking of others when Clem was there as her conscience, rather than the cold hearted psycho shrew that she wound up being).... and they could have still killed off Sarah in the next episode, during the shootout with the Russian bandit ambush.

And of course, they could have had some more character fleshing out of 400 Days characters, rather than a 2 second cameo for each of them (other than Bonnie).

    1 was excellent.
2 was... pretty bad, but still had some fun points
Hopefully 3 for the Walking Dead game will at least by like Indy 3 the movie - much better than 2, even if not -quite- as good as 1... but close enough.
