Shane. He had police training. We've never seen Daryl come to fisticuffs.
In general I think Shane has more strengths but Daryl would use cheap-shot or something and find a way to beat Shane.
Definitely Shane.
Daryl has skill and is definitely faster but Shane he crazy and stronger
Daryl
He's not a trained fighter, but he seems like he could hold his own
Shane, no contest. I think Daryl would maybe have a chance if he got the jump on him, but that really isn't the case of a fair matchup.
The Governor.
Or Tyreese XD.
Tough to say, neither one has done anything to prove that they are expert fighters. Shane got his ass beat by Rick yet he is clearly a tough guy who can handle himself in a fight and we've hardly seen Daryl in a fist fight. If I had to choose though, I would say Shane.
Shane actually won the fight quite easily in my opinion. Rick only gained the advantage and did most of his damage after Shane had already beaten him. Shane easily could have finished Rick if he had wanted to. He had assumed that Rick was going to be trapped under the motorcycle long enough for him to go off and kill the prisoner (which is really all he cared about at first), but Rick was able to get free and jump him from behind when he wasn't expecting anything.

Shane had Rick on the ground in under 10 seconds, but chose to try and take his gun away (so he could go kill the prisoner) opposed to beating him senseless. He actually got the gun out of the holster and proceeded to try and walk away, as Rick recovered and landed his first hits because of Shane disengaging. I personally think Shane was supposed to be the better fighter of the two.
I love Daryl, and he's pretty badass in his own right, but Rick and Shane are ahead of him due to their training, in my opinion. That and Shane has him physically outmatched as it is. He really has every advantage that you could want.
Daryl also pretty much got taken to school by that bald cop from the hospital group earlier this season, for what that's worth.
And admittedly, Shane does probably out weigh Daryl by at least 20-40 lbs.
But still I think Daryl could take him, especially if it were Carroll that Shane was posing a threat to.
If that happened, Daryl would probably stranger Shane without hesitation.
Much like how Daryl Shot Dawn, after she killed Beth.
Shane wouldn't stand a chance against Rick now.
Rick has become such a brutal fighter, that he could probably take down two men at once.
That weight is probably a decent amount of muscle weight as well, as Shane is most definitely better put together/ in better shape. I don't think Daryl would really have the strength to strangle him, and he is at a disadvantage as it is with Shane being a bit bigger. On top of all of that, Shane also had training. He really just kind of had every advantage that you would want. I'm not sure that Carol being in danger would really change anything, other than determination to win I suppose. Personally I think Daryl's brother would be a much better match up
I've never really followed that line of thinking. Rick has been hardened by the world, but that realistically doesn't make a whole lot of difference, especially when talking about going up against someone who is actually a skilled fighter in his own right. The whole brutality aspect gives him an edge in the fact that he will always fight tooth and nail to the death, but I don't really think it makes up for the fact that Shane still physically has the advantage and seems to also have a slight advantage in combat abilities. Being brutal doesn't enhance your physical ability, and based on how Shane didn't really even have to take Rick seriously in their fight back in season two while still managing to win, I would be very hard pressed to go so far as to say that Shane wouldn't stand a chance against Rick as he is now. It's certainly possible that Rick could beat Shane, but I personally think Shane would still have an edge.
Tyrese = mighty Joe young
Merle's missing hand would still be a handicap.
Which was shown to be the case, when he fought with the Governor.
Depends on the situation honestly.
Shane
After re-watching that fight, I honestly feel Rick took it to Shane.
Shane ended up on the ground and got pummeled.
Re watch it and tell me what you think?
Shane only ended up on the ground because Rick jumped him from behind though, after Shane had already essentially beaten him twice. Shane could have very easily finished him after he pushed the motorcycle over on top of him. The only reason why he didn't do so is because he wasn't interested in doing that. He wasn't interested in beating the snot out of Rick, he was interested in killing the prisoner, which is the only reason why the fight was so drawn out. Shane had Rick down in less than 10 seconds, but instead of choosing to pummel him, he simply took Rick's gun away and tried to walk off with it. Rick obviously wasn't having that, which led to him getting some shots in. Shane really wasn't taking the fight seriously in the sense of really wanting to beat Rick down. He didn't reach that point until Rick jumped him from behind and got his main shots in.
Feel free to tell me if those GIFs are slowing down the page a lot, I'll remove them if that's the case. Anyway, those are the instances that I was describing above.
I'm a little biased, but I think that Rick had comparable fighting ability at best, with Shane having a physical advantage.
Perhaps Shane did have an advantage.
But Rick is one hell of a tenacious individual!
But like I said, Rick has become such a brutal fighter, that Shane probably wouldn't stand a chance.
Remember how he dealt with Joe and his gang?
Remember how he dealt with Terminus?
Rick hacked their leader to death with a machete, the very same machete that the Terminus leader used to hack up human beings for food.
Rick has become so brutal, when it comes to killing people that threaten his family; that includes everyone in the group, that really he's not to much different from what Shane was.
Except for the fact that Rick still hangs onto hope, that there is still something better, somewhere safe that the group can settle.
And that he also is willing to give new people a chance, something Shane was never willing to do.
One thing I have to admit, I hated when they had Shane shave his head.
It made him look really weird, and not villainous.
If they wanted to make him look villainous, have him grow a beard.
A beard would've made Shane look much more villainous as opposed to a shaved head.
In fact, the only person I've ever seen that could pull off the shaved head look, was Bryon Cranston, when he was on Breaking Bad.
Shane hands down. Daryl, as skilled as he is with a crossbow, doesn't seem like he's very adept at hand to hand combat. Maybe he's been in a few bar fights, but he was always with his brother at that time, so it was most likely never a one-on-one. He's also not as heavily built as Shane, not to mention that Shane has definitely had training considering the physical demand of his job before the apocalypse hit. He is not only trained to fight, but also fights pretty dirty.(this is an advantage in the apocalypse imo) Lastly, Shane fights like a damn animal. He legitimately enjoys fighting, where Daryl doesn't seem to like fighting at all. I'm pretty sure all the times that Daryl has fought by himself, he's had his ass handed to him. Mostly because Daryl doesn't seem to have the motivation to fight at his absolute best regardless of who his opponent is, so he's always at a disadvantage. With that said, Shane clearly outranks Daryl when it comes to experience, brutality, physical size/strength, and overall skill regarding hand to hand combat, so he'd definitely win against Daryl. I'd be far more interested in seeing a Merle vs Shane, or Abraham vs Shane fight tbh.
I do have to agree, Shane is definitely bigger, and more experienced at fighting.
And I never thought about it before, but I guess you're right, Daryl doesn't enjoy fighting.
Daryl, has really become a different person since the beginning, much more compassionate.
And I think it would've been interesting, to see Merle and Shane go at it.
Back when Merle had two hands.
Having just one, was a huge disadvantage, and Merle's fight with the Governor proved that.
In fact, I think a real good fight, would be Shane vs The Governor.
I believe that the purpose of that scene was to emphasize Shane losing touch with reality. Rick returning to the group caused Shane to lose his place, he was happy that his best friend was back, but he was also angry that he'd lost the family he'd found with Lori and Carl, and position as leader of the group. Maybe a better way to put it is that he was losing touch with who he was and who he is now. He couldn't recognize who he was becoming, and though Lori had a right to go back to her husband, the sudden switch from "Shane to Rick" did a number on Shane's psyche imo. I really think all that stress, confusion, and overall heartbreak (because Shane really was in love with Lori) caused him to have an emotional breakdown. Many people chop off their hair, or shave their head when they lose touch with reality/themselves, in hopes of finding clarity, or having an epiphany of some sort to tell them what they should do with their life. That scene very well may have been to mark his descent to villain status, but that's not the way I saw it.
Interesting.
I never thought about it like that before.
One thing I will say, is that Shane's behavior toward Lori became downright creepy.
Especially after he murdered Otis, that's when Shane really started to spiral out of control.
Though I will admit, that Shane still cared about Carl, in his own way.
And Shane did have a point, when he said that Rick was placing that boy, Randall, ahead of his own son, at a time when Carl needed his father the most. ( That was back on Hershel's farm, the episode after Dale was killed.)
But when it came right down to it, Shane really only cared about himself.
That was abundantly clear when he tried to murder Rick.
If Shane really cared for Lori and Carl, he would've realized how hard losing Rick would be on them.
But no, Shane was willing to put his selfish wants and desires ahead theirs.
On a side note: do you think Shane pulled off the bald look well?
Like I said in my earlier post, I think he looked weird.
And quite frankly, I really don't like the shaved head, or the buzzcut look.
I buzzed my hair off once, about 2 or 3 years ago, and it looked horrible on me.
When my hair grew back, after about 2 months, I was so happy.
And I've never buzzed my hair since.
And on that note, I've heard people say that their scalp is much cooler in the summertime with a buzzcut, but that was not my experience.
Oh there's no denying that Shane's love for Lori and Carl turned into an obsession towards the end, he was definitely in the wrong when he murdered Otis, and when he tried to kill Rick to take back Lori, Carl, the group etc. But I think a lot of people fail to see what caused Shane to lose his mind, and they often say that he was a bad person all along, even before the apocalypse. He wasn't, his spiral into madness happened because his reality and purpose in life that he'd built after the apocalypse hit was turned upside down. He had a breakdown, he knew deep down Lori and Carl weren't his, but a part of him felt like they were, that they should be his. He legitimately believed he was doing the right thing, that he was doing all this to protect Lori and Carl, all the way to his death. It's also stated at one point that Shane was in love with Lori for years, but repressed/ignored his feelings for her because she was with his best friend. He finally gets Lori and Carl at the expense of Rick "dying" and the end of the world, but in Shane's head this was all he ever wanted. He immediately began to see Lori and Carl as his wife and son, only to lose them when Rick returns. He had everything, and in his eyes it's all been taken from him by his best friend who he both loves and hates at the same time. He's glad Rick is back, but he also wants him gone. Honestly, Shane doesn't understand his own mind, or how to properly handle psychologically trying situations, that inability is what did him in. He's always just repressed and ignored his problems, but he can't do that now, he can't leave the group so he's forced to deal with it. It was too much for both is heart and his mind to handle, everything that he'd been repressing for years, not just days, regarding his jealousy and resentment of Rick came to the surface. It was his breaking point, and Shane didn't have the means to cope with everything that was happening, he couldn't accept that it was over. So he began to go insane. He has several flaws, and I'm not trying to excuse any of the terrible things that he did. Just trying to shed some light on the reasoning behind his actions and behavior, that he wasn't just this evil person down to the core. I think when people just write him off as a villain and nothing else they're missing out on a very complex and interesting character.
I think he pulled it off, though I personally think Jon Bernthal looks better with hair, and I liked the beard because he reminded me of Wolverine lol. But seeing as his character after he shaved his head was not mentally stable, Shane tended to have these really intense borderline unnerving expressions on his face. So that may have contributed to the weird vibe you were getting.
I honestly thought Shane looked kind of bad ass with his head shaved. Personally, I think he's better off without the beard (which we saw him with in Season 3 when Rick was hallucinating)
Well I will say, I applauded Shane, figuratively, when he beat the shit outta Carroll's abusive husband, Ed.
That guy had it coming!
The way see it, a man has no right to hit a woman, unless she comes at him with a butcher-knife, then it's self-defense.
When a man abuses a woman, or a child, it makes me sick!
So for what Shane did to that shitbird Ed, I say: "Bravo!"
Well said. I wholeheartedly agree with all of this (which probably goes without saying, seeing as I'm sometimes a little obsessed with the character lol).
I thought the short hair, and short beard, was a good look for Shane.
I watched season 1-2 for the second time recently, and I've really begun to see just how interesting Shane is, I see why he's your favorite! I have a new appreciation for his character, I would have liked to see him in season 3 tbh.
I personally am glad he's not around.
As it has given a chance for Daryl, my favorite character next to Rick and Hershel, to really grow as a person.
Personally, I think Daryl is one of the most colorful characters on the whole series.
The Governor would win. He was the strongest in hand to hand combat in the tv series.
Shane. I think Shane already had him in a choke hold in season 1.
Shane
Shane.
Pretty sure Shane, but Daryl would be a hell of a fight.
Abraham.
I don't think it's very fair to judge him based on his fight with the Governor, considering it really wasn't a straight up one-on-one fight. It was more of the Governor taking advantage of the fact that Merle had just gotten the shit kicked out of him (plus hit over the head) by Martinez and some other guy while he was on the ground after killing a walker. That's why the Governor just kind of tossed him around after he stepped into the fight, plus he landed several cheap shots himself. Merle really wasn't in a position to do much fighting back. Overall he would probably be better off having his other hand, but I still think a match up with Shane would be pretty interesting.
I'd kick his ass.
