  • Dear Telltale team,

I have bought TWD on steam today and can’t seem to be able to run it.
I have the common issue of black screen and sound but no image.

I am running a macbook pro retina 2013 and OSX Yosemite 10.10.2.
The cmd+f fix doesn’t do anything, it doesn’t switch the application into windowed mode therefore I am pretty desperate to run it.

  • nothing i do works. at all. i have a 2015 macbook pro and i re-downloaded it. i just want to play it already :( especially on my new laptop! please help.

Can you please clarify if you have tried the above 4 step solution that I suggested? I recommend trying that, and see if you are able to start the game successfully.

    1) In System Preferences, select Displays, then select Scaled - More Space to change the screen resolution to very detailed.

    2) In System Preferences, select Dock, then deselect 'Automatically hide and show the dock', to be able to click on the bottom of the screen.

    3) Start up the game and run it in windowed mode using the Mac shortcut (Command + F).

    4) You should now be able to see the main menu now and change the screen resolution to one that fits the window.

I still have the black screen after loading episode 4. I have tried moving the prefs.prop file, renaming it, changing resolution, going to windowed mode... None of these solutions work. Everything was fine until I was headed to the next episode...

My apologies for the delayed response. After looking over your Support Tool information again, it appears that your computer's processor is currently running below the minimum system requirements to play the game successfully. Where the game requires 2.0 GHz of processing speed, your computer's processor is curerntly running at 1.6 GHz. This can cause graphical and performance issues such as the one you are experiencing. Can you please clarify if switching the game to Windowed Mode by using the shortcut (Alt+Enter) allows you to see the game's screen after it turns black?

  • Switching to Windowed mode made no difference. It still just loads the black screen with cursor.

It is most definitely not a processor issue, I played the game for months with no issues at all. I can start a new game and everything works perfectly, it's only episode 5 in my original playthrough that is having this issue and not loading. Very frustrating there is no easy fix to what seems to be a very common issue.

  • Its amazing... This is a very common issue and the directions are to post the pic of system issues here for support... its been a week and not one reply or response... I have seen one post from an admin above and it did not address the issue but rather told the commenter that they weren't up to date enough to play the game... (they posted because its been fine and now won't work. They have obviously been running it fine before.) I really like the telltale series but its hard to believe that with an issue this big there isnt much support out there for it...

Unfortunately the normal fix would be disabling a prefs.prop file, and the only other one I can find in your Support Tool information is already renamed to prefs.prop.bak. Could you please clarify if you ever deleted/removed the game and file directories from your computer, then re-downloaded it, and synced your computer with the save files from the Steam Cloud?

If so, the Steam Cloud may not have synced all of your save files properly, and you will unfortunately need to start a new game. If you did not have Steam Cloud Saves enabled for the game and you are still experiencing the issue, I unfortunately am out of potential solutions to resolve your issue, and would have to recommend starting a new game. My apologies for any difficulties this has caused you.

My apologies for the delayed response. After looking over your support tool information, I can't seem to find another prefs.prop file, which is usually the root cause of the issue. Can you please clarify if you ever found a second prefs.prop file, and removed it, or replaced your main prefs.prop file with it?

Also, do you possibly have Steam Cloud Saves enabled for the game? (You can check this by right clicking on the game in your Steam Library, clicking Properties, and click the Updates tab. Near the bottom of the page, you can see if the Steam Cloud is enabled for The Walking Dead: Season 1) If it is enabled, does disabling it, and restarting Steam allow you to access your saves?

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

My apologies, unfortunately I do not have any other potential solutions to resolve your issue. You can try uninstalling the game, and reinstalling it from Steam by right-clicking the game in your Steam Library and clicking 'Delete Local Content'. (This will not delete your save files) Then after reinstalling the game, try starting the game again, and see if you are able to use your save files. Unfortunately if you are still unable to see them after trying this, your save files may have become corrupted, and you will need to start a new game.

My apologies for the delayed response. Unfortunately if you are still unable to start Episode 3 successfully, I would have to recommend deleting your save files from the game, and starting a new game. This time make sure that Steam Cloud saves are disabled before you start playing the game, and you should not experience this issue again.

  • Hi, I am also experiencing this problem. I asked my friend if i could have it and he just gave me a copy of it. So i dont know if it is legit or not but it is supposed to work. When i boot the app up, it shows up with a black screen with the background sounds still playing for the title screen. I can still interact with the game but i dont know where my cursor is because the screen is blacked out.

My friend did not reveal to me the origin of this file but assured me it was supposed to work. (He is a very mysterious person) Even if it is not legit could you try to help me?
