Would You Buy Season 3 if Clementine WASN'T the player character?

  • I can understand why some people are "No Clem no buy" though because each version of TWD has it's central character that, without them, a lot of people would just stop caring about. The comics aren't called The Walking Rick, but a lot would stop reading if he was killed. The show isn't called The Walking Daryl, but how many people say, "If Daryl dies, we riot." I'm not one of those people that would just stop because it doesn't have Clem, but it's understandable why people are like that. She has been the main focus of the two seasons and to get rid of her would alienate a lot of people, like if they got rid of Rick or Daryl in the show.

Clem should definitley NOT be the protagonist again, it didn't work well in S2 imo She could return as a deuteragonist. Also, I may be

  • I don't think there are many people who actually wouldn't buy S3 if Clem wasn't included, it's a vocal minority, and most of them wouldn't even act like that.

Also, I've never heard of people who would freak out if Rick died. And those 'If Daryl dies, we riot' guys can riot all they want, it wouldn't bring him back if AMC decided to kill him off. Also, they are only a vocal minority aswell.

  • I don't think there are either, I agree it's a vocal minority, I'm just saying it's understandable why they do feel that way about not buying S3 if Clem isn't involved.

Considering how Rick has always been the main character of the comics, even if recent issues haven't focused that much on him, I'm sure there would be a shitstorm if Kirkman decided to kill him and continue without him. Again, not one of those people since the comics have plenty of other great characters other than Rick, but I could imagine a lot of people would stop reading if Rick was taken out, even if people don't say it.

  • I do kind of like Daryl though I doubt I'll lose any sleep if he's killed off, Rick is just okay, I know he's like the protagonist of the TV series but I'm just not as emotionally attached to either of them to the same level I'm attached to the character of Clem.

I am really looking forward to Telltale Season 3 of TWD and while the way Season 2 was handled does leave me worrying about Clem's future, I actually found it quite fun playing as a child in a zombie apocalypse. Personally I'm hoping that we get to see Clem grow and mature over time, I still think there's potential for her story.

Of course, had Lee not died in Season 1 then I would have loved to continue playing him as the main character with Clem as the deuteragonist. S1 started off a story that continued off in Season 2, which I experienced through thick and thin, I came to care for the characters over time and I care for what lies ahead in Clem's journey.

Playing as an older Clementine sounds solid story-wise, it would definitely be interesting to see how she's changed over the years.

While Clem being the PC would be my most preferable option (since she's like 90% of the reason I play Telltale in the first place) I could also settle for her being the deuteragonist again alongside a new main character, however I would automatically care more about Clem than for the new PC, because after two seasons I'm quite avid about continuing Clem's journey and what more adventures Telltale could have in store for her, since I find it really hard to play Telltale with Clem completely gone and replaced with someone else I'm supposed to care about.

  • I do agree with one point you make, Season 2 had way too many writers that basically just tore apart both the story and at Clem's character as well, I hope for Season 3 Telltale learns from its past mistakes and gets FEWER writers to plot out Season 3, keeping the episode plots more focused and consistent.

I'd like Quality over Quantity of writers working on Season 3.

Regardless, I do hope Clem returns in Season 3 (and hopefully as the main character).

  • I actually quite enjoyed edging Clem towards the darker side of her character, she's clearly not a innocent helpless little girl anymore but far more ruthless and cunning one (when she wants to be). For me character development is paramount, while Season 2 wasn't perfect (and admittedly didn't reach the same level as Season 1 but came close) there were various different ways to play out Clementine and shape her character based on the player's references, and there was a clear struggle over holding on to one's humanity in the apocalypse.

No Going Back was a bit rushed compared to other episodes, and maybe it even ruined Season 2 for many players, I myself was intially unsatisfied with how it ended but after a few replays I came to appreciate it better, though there were still areas Telltale could have improved upon (Rebecca still dying of the same causes regardless of whether or not you stole the medicine, Arvo shooting you even if you're always nice to him, not getting a chance to kill Mike and Bonnie.... or Arvo for that matter).

Still, I'm optimistic that Season 3 will improve in some areas compared to Season 2, its part of the reason I really hope Clem's story continues.

It was weird the direction they went with her. Even when you choose options that you think are "nice", she says them like a bitch. One

What if TellTale made a Season 3 that didnt follow Clem but they announced that Season 4 would, so while they make season 3 they can work on season 4 they could have endings have an extremely drastic impact? ;o

  • I'm kind of meh towards AJ, since he's a baby he doesn't really have much personality, though its amazing how he actually managed to survive both his birth and the harsh winter that was partially responsible for killing Rebecca.

Ideally, I'd prefer for Clementine to remain the protagonist and for the AJ to be the deuteragonist, I have nothing against babies but Clem has character and development while AJ is.... well boring and blank. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping to see him again in Season 3, older and with some character, but I highly doubt he's worthy of replacing Clementine.

  • I probably would watch an LP of the first episode before buying any other episodes, just to see who the new character was and if it was any good. But I will be/would be very annoyed if Clementine was dropped as the main character. And TT would be stupid to do that anyway- she is the face of the franchise and they can do a lot more with her story after the ending to S2 than they did at the end of S1

  • I don't really have any attachment to AJ and no real reason to want to play him. Also, TT would have to skip really, REALLY far forward in time so we could play as AJ, and I guess (like me) the majority of fans would be frustrated that they missed all those years just for the sake of getting a new main character. Plus the name sucks (should've been Lee Junior...)

  • I'm hesitant in buying Season 3, whether Clementine is involved/playable or not. After experiencing Season 2 as a whole and looking back at the questionable directions the writing had taken, I'm rather apathetic at how Season 3 will turn out.

I don't believe I set my standards too high with Season 2, but I was left thinking that Season 2 could have been so much more than just a rehash of old ideas instead of trying something new and exciting, blatant character favouritism that ends up stealing the spotlight and costs many two dimensional characters the development they needed to stand out, and a well characterized and beloved child deuteragonist being downgraded into a featureless protagonist with no real purpose to the story.

Season 3 will really need to 'wow' me if I am to consider buying the next game.

  • I would still probably get the first season to check it out if Clem wasn't there. Id get the rest if she is still there playable or not.

  • I've said this in other threads and I will say it again, I will play season 3 if Clementine is not trhe playable character but I won't buy it if she isn't in the game atleast once and episode.. This is for multiple reasons not because I'm a huge arrogant cunt and I just don't want Clem to go, that is one of the reasons but the others are

    1. We've built a sequel building Clementines character, season 1 was a story about Clementine but we were just playing it through Lee's character and that's why everyone loves season 1 along with other things but that is one of the reasons for huge fans.
    2. A lot of people look at Clementine as the face of The Walking Dead Game, they say Clementine is the only one that people can relate to enough to the point of them crying because of her.
    3. I've heard tonnes of people saying that if they kill off Clementine/remove her from the game with no reasoning they will stop playing TWDG like Pewdiepie, Cryaotic, Pokeleef and even me, I've said it multiple times but hey, it is what it is.

Sorry for the pretty long post but just sharing my opinion and some reasons to back up those opinions. Have a nice day :)

  • I wouldn't buy the game but i'd watch someone else play it. I believe you should still play as her since she's made such an impact to the game and the little cliffhanger at each of the endings didn't help much. To me it would be pointless to go off to another character and try to develop that character and leave her to sit and rotate. It should keep going with her until she ends up dead in some heart-wrenching last episode or something! (Hopefully not exceeding 5 or so seasons).

  • Alt text

It would just add one more poor soul to the long list of lost potential.

  • I would, yeah.

As much as I love Clem, I wouldn't mind seeing someone else's story, it might even make things a little more interesting this go.

But alas, I know a lot of people (Even in this thread.) would not buy it if Clem wasn't involved in some way, Telltale has to look out for their profits, which side do you think they'll listen to?

  • I actually think that if they decide to kill Rick off in the comic it'd still be good. Because there are an abundance of great characters to continue the story. Same goes for the show. Not really a die hard Daryl fan, it'd be sad if he died, but I'd continue to watch.

But with this game, much like Rick and the show/comic, has been about Clem from the start. S1 was about Lee taking care of her, S2 was about her making it on her own. So for me personally, it wouldn't make a lick a damn sense to completely start from scratch. It's like: "Here you go, we've got an all new character for TWD." "But where's Clem?" "She's safe. You know, unless you got the alone ending, then idk. She could be safe, she could be dead, idk." "Really?" "Of course, she's safe, AJ's safe. But you'll never see them again. But don't worry, this new character is awesome, you'll love em. But don't get too close, because you never know when we'll start over again."

I remember when the comic introduced Magna. I was like; "WTF? Who the hell are these people?", but when they showed Jesus on his horse I was like: "Oh thank god." I wouldn't want the show, or comic to completely start over with new characters either, it just doesn't make sense, in my honest opinion.

I apologize for the rant. Just needed to vent.

  • Yeah, a lot of the time her voice didn't seem to have much emotion in it? I know her VA is good, but it feels like they directed her to speak like that, particularly in Episode 1.

  • I kind of just thought that season 2's multiple endings marked Clem's finale.
I felt that trying to be "nice" Clem was quite misleading because the text will say something that you assume is nice, and she says it really cold and emotionlessly.

Telltale kind of screwed themselves over a little by bringing Clem's story up to the two year point, where the comics are only at.
I assumed for season 3, they'd just turn back the clock a bit and make a new story with a new PC.
I would love the idea of exploring the cabin crew before we meet them.
But that ain't gonna happen :(
