If Andrew Lincoln was not cast as Rick, who do you think would have been best suited for the role?

edited January 2015 in The Walking Dead

I'm referring more so to Tv actors, but if you wish to mention a movie actor, feel free to do so.

If Andrew Lincoln was not cast as Rick, I'd personally say that the next best actor to play Rick would be: Scott Bakula.
Yes Scott, who is now 60 yrs old, might be a bit old for the role.
However, he has still proven himself to be a wonderful actor, with such memorable roles as: Sam Beckett / Quantum Leap, and, Jonathan Archer / Star-trek Enterprise.

For movie actors, I'd say: Aaron Eckhart.
Aaron did an impressive job as Two-Face in: The Dark Knight.
Aaron really displayed a very impressive range of acting talent, when he played Harvey Dent/Two-Face, who went from a good and idealistic man, to a tortured and brutalized man, who was out for revenge against world.
That, and from pictures that I've seen of the comic-book version of Rick, Aaron Eckhart looks like him.

Plus Aaron is at more of an appropriate age for the role.
I don't know what Rick's age was suppose to be, as I've never read any of the comics, but from the pictures I've seen of him, due to what other users have posted on this website, in different threads, I'd say Rick looks to be somewhere between 40-50 yrs old.

Charles Hunnam (Jax from Sons of Anarchy) He would have been perfect in my opinion.

  • Scott Porter (Luke) tried to pass a casting, but Andrew Lincoln won ;)

It's just sUCH A RICK FACe

  • Viggo Mortensen, which a shadow of a doubt. He's already been in an apocalyptic film called The Road, officially one of the best and yet most depressing films of all time. The guy is absolutely amazing, and if I 'm honest he'd be BETTER than Andrew Lincoln at the role. He's probably in my top ten actors of all time, and he's probably the most underrated actor in the world. He'd be perfect for any role, but especially for TWD

  • Viggo Mortersen is the only guy who could alternatively play the role and possibly do it any better.

Wasn't Thomas Jane originally Frank Darabont's first choice? I think, simply speculating, he could have worked but I think Andy Lincoln was the better choice

  • To be honest, I feel like Andrew Lincoln is the perfect Rick Grimes, maybe it's because he is Rick Grimes but you know...

  • Nope. :> Believe me, The Road is one of my favourite movies, I've watched it dozens of times. Great one, though.

What helps Mr Mortensen so much as an actor, other than the fact that he's gotta good sounding voice; and is tremendously talented, is that he's got a very expressive face.

    I saw the Road.
I while I think it was a good film, I can't say that it has a lot of re-watch value for me.
It was a great film, but not one that I particularly care to watch over and over.
Though I must say, I did like Viggo's narration during the film.
He has a very pleasant voice to listen too.
And, it was probably the most realistic apocalyptic film I've ever seen, particularly in showing what most people would probably be like in that type of situation, and that is selfish; and completely animalistic.

On the other hand, The Book Of Eli, now that is a film I'll re-watch every now and again.
    Why?
I think that the message of hope was stronger in this film, as opposed to The Road.
And on a personal note, the thread of spirituality that ran through The Book Of Eli, resonated with me as a person.
Plus, who didn't love that machete action!

And as far as your comment about Viggo "not being able to fill Rick's shoes," well I have to agree with you.
Though I will say, that I think that Mr Mortensen would be an excellent choice to play Joel from The Last Of Us.
Mr Mortensen is great in action films!
Such movies as Hildalgo, Eastern Promises, A History Of Violence, and others like them, have cemented Mr Mortensen as a great action star.

  • No offense intended, but it's actually Liam Neeson.
