“I’m curious about that guy with the rifle. We follow him.” John said.

Puncake rolled his eyes. “Sure thing boss.” And John parks the car.

“Stay with her. I’ll go check it out.” John said pulling his shotgun up and shutting the door a bit harder then he should have. He walked towards the museum of art, and peeked through the door. It looked empty. He went inside, and scanned the room. On the floor was a bunch of broken frames that made the words “LEAVE OR DIE.”

Ignoring the warning, John continues forward down the fairly lit, white hallway. He looked at his watch, it was 11:24. Then he heard someone shout. “Can you read or do you have a death wish?” The man stepped out with a long rifle aimed right at his chest. It was not the same man that had walked inside. This man had a black leather jacket, ripped jeans, and a biker helmet. His eyes were a cold blue, the kind that would pierce your very being.

John noticed he was fingering the trigger lightly, and he eyed him up and down. “Cop huh? I fucking hate cops.” He said as he pulled the trigger. John saw it coming and darted to the left. He hit his head on the wall and felt it throb. Reaching for his shotgun he fired down the hall, and the bullets scattered hitting nothing.

“Back off.” Someone said from behind him, it was the guy who he saw walk in. He could see the desire to kill. “Where’s your lapdog, the lean fellow with the ugly clothes? Never mind that. You’re coming with me. You’ll get exactly what you did to Twistee.” Spark said rushing towards him.

From behind Leather Jacket Puncake appeared and cuffed him. The man out muscled him but the surprise caught him off guard. John did the same to the man that walked in. “I told you to stay in the car.” John said angrily.

“By the looks of it, you should be glad I came to help. I’m starting to question your leadership.” Puncake snapped back.

“I’m starting to question your loyalty.” John said staring at him.

Puncake ignored that and they shoved the two in the back with the girl. “If any of you touch her I’ll shoot you.” Puncake said, and then got into the passenger seat and kept the gun on the guy in the middle. “What’s your names anyway?” Puncake asked.

“Dennis.” The more angered man growled.

“Does it really matter?” The second man said.

    “Yeah it does.”

    “You can call me Spark.”

“And you, I never caught your name?” Puncake asked the girl.

“Ursula. The guy in the back is Allen.”

    “You know him?”

“He was… A neighbor.” Ursula said then looking down again looking like she wanted to be left alone.

Half an hour passed and Spark and Dennis started elbowing each other. “Cut it out.” John said then making Puncake shoot Dennis in the foot.

“Aghhhh. Why didn’t you shoot him? I thought cops were supposed to be fair.” Dennis said.

“If I remember correctly you were the one shooting at me back there, so shut up, and keep quiet or the next one goes through your head, better then you deserve at that.”

After a couple minutes they reached the gate. It opened and he drove in, and parked the police car by the station. Puncake took Dennis, and a now conscious Allen to the Left where a well-guarded gate stood and opened to allow them in. John took Ursula and Spark to the station to be tested. The test contained questions, and their answers would provide an idea of what kind of person they were and if they should be allowed in the civilian area. Ursula went first, and passed easily, especially since they found her the way they did there was no surprise that she was not a bad person.

    Spark

John moved with Spark to the fairly lit grey room with a table and chairs sitting opposite of it. John and Spark sat down and John began asking questions.“Have you killed any humans? If so why.”

Spark tried to remain calm and said simply. “No.”

John stared at him blankly. “Wrong answer.”

“Okay, I did, but I regret---“

    “Wrong again.”

“I killed some friends of that asshole Dennis because they decided to fuck over my friend Twistee. Tell me Officer. Is that answer satisfactory?”

John said nothing and then continued. “Any more?”

[Tell him about the incident at the garage.] [Say you don’t want to talk about it.] [Lie and say no.]

“Was this Twistee a good man?”

“Yes” “Nobody in this world is good.” “He wasn’t the greatest but he was my friend.” “No.”

“There is a man trapped under a door. Let’s say this man is Dennis. What would you do?”

“Try to help him, but I wouldn’t like it.” “Shoot him so he won’t feel the pain.” “Leave. The asshole deserves it.”

“Would you do whatever it takes to survive?”

    “Of course.” “It depends.”

“And finally… If I gave you the chance, what would you do to Dennis?”

“Torture him like he did to Twistee.” “Give him a quick death.” “Exile him, and make sure he never comes back.”

Lots of choices. But which are the right ones? :3

  • Sorry for the wait. Sometimes things get busy, or I get lazy, so bear with me, I'll try to get parts out ASAP but it might take a while.

  • “Any more?”

“Me and a friend were at a garage. We found Twistee strung up naked with a bunch of chopped up limbs with a parting note from that ass Dennis. A man came up and said he knew where he and his pal went. Said he would arrest them and I would receive some amnesty crap.”

“Was this Twistee a good man?”

“He wasn’t the greatest but he was my friend. I won’t let some butchers get away with ripping him up like that.”

“There is a man trapped under a door. Let’s say this man is Dennis. What would you do?”

“Would you do whatever it takes to survive?”

    “It depends on the situation.

“And finally… If I gave you the chance, what would you do to Dennis?”

“Torture him like he did to Twistee. I believe in an eye for an eye.” Spark ended.

John looked him over, and sat there for a minute in thought. He sighs and shakes his head. “I like you Spark. But the answers you gave me were… How do I say it… Cruel? Though you were honest, I will allow you to live on the Walls, to patrol the criminal side. You are now my second in command, but cross me and you’ll regret it. In an act of good faith, you may spend 24 hours in the residence of 24 Faith Avenue. There is a present in the garage. Tomorrow you will depart for the wall and stay there until I order otherwise.” John then said shaking his hand and then leaving.

Spark got up and went outside. What could be in the garage he wondered. This didn’t seem like such a bad place. But it just seemed too orderly, and peaceful. He thought about stirring things up but lost the train of thought as he reached the garage. He thought it might be a car, but instead there was someone in a chair with a gag over his mouth. Spark smiled and closed the garage door behind him.

    Puncake

After he escorted Ursula to her house across the street from Spark’s, he ran quickly to the surveillance building. Harrison, a man about his size with blonde hair, rough stubble, and a thick accent that he could not recognize. He was wearing some casual clothes and was trying to break inside with a crowbar. Puncake ran silently and slammed him into the wall. He fell and his nose began to bleed. A shorter middle eastern man opened the door and sighed. “Thanks Pun. I thought I was a goner there.” Salih said looking down at the knocked out aggressor.

Puncake just smiled, he liked showing other people who they should be afraid of. “Get him in the cells.” He finally said. There was one last person he would have to deal with. Gareth. This was the first time he pulled a stunt like this and he wouldn’t get away with it. John said he would handle it, but this was personal for Puncake. He reached the shack that the pig called a house and broke the window with the crowbar he picked up from Harrison. He climbed in and at the top of the narrow stairway he held a shotgun.

They stared at each other for a moment. “Sorry, but it’s either me or you.” Gareth said, and then fired. Puncake jumped into the living room and landed on a TV. It cracked, and he got up quickly and ran to the kitchen for a weapon. Gareth was already downstairs and fired another shell that hit the wall beside Puncake. He picked up a knife and threw it at Gareth. It flew out the window.

Gareth shot again and Puncake could feel the small pain in his right shoulder. The force threw him to the ground against the counter. Beside him lay a sack of potatoes. He picked it up and stood up swiftly smashing Gareth in the face with it. Gareth crashed onto the wall and fired again hitting his refrigerator. Puncake hit his head a couple more times with the sack and then dropped it.

He grabbed him by the shirt and tried to drag him. He was too heavy. “Need some help?” The familiar Russian accent asked. Puncake swore under his exhausted breath and turned around. John stood in the living room with Cole, and Ruth. “You disobeyed my orders. I said I would take care of him.”

“And what would happen if you didn’t make it in time?” Puncake said cringing as he felt hot blood pour down his sweaty chest under his police uniform.

“We’ll never know now will we? You know I don’t tolerate people who don’t follow my orders. I strip you of your badge and rank. Tomorrow you will stand guard with Spark, until I say otherwise. Or you can leave.”

He stood up with some trouble, but he managed to bear the pain and pass by John, slamming the door behind him. He took his car, and started to drive. The gate opened for him and he turned to head West. He didn’t look back. Before the apocalypse him and John used to be close. John was kinder then, but now he was a different person. That night they were bowling, and he wouldn’t forget the blood that stained the wood floor.

He didn’t know where to go anymore. There was nowhere else he wanted to be, but he wouldn’t live in that hellhole anymore. It was high time he found new people less strict then John. He remembered all the times they had together, and wished things could have gone differently. Putting the depressing thoughts aside he kept on driving past the beautiful trees on the newly paved road. That’s when he noticed the car that was driving towards him. It was a black SUV with tinted windows, so he could barely see who was inside. After a minute they passed each other.

That went better then expected Puncake thought. But then the car turned around and it started honking at him. Puncake floored it, and tried to escape the oncoming mysterious driver. It caught up beside him and turned right into him. Puncake reversed just in time and then sped up. The black car stopped and Puncake tried to break but it was too late. The car screeched and Puncake’s head hit the seat

A tall man in a trench coat and a gas mask came out of his car, and he stumbled towards the police car. He opened the door, and pulled Puncake out. “Wh… What do you want?” Puncake said dizzily.

“Food, water, medicine. The usual buddy. You got any? Cause I ain’t letting you get away with hitting my ride.” He said in a emotionless voice scowling as he turned around and looking at the dent marks. “Well?”

“Why are you even asking me? Just look in the car jackass.”

The man kicked him in the gut and searched the car. “Really? Nothing? Not even a gun? What about that settlement you came from? You must have plenty there.”

    “No not really.” Puncake replied.

“Good lie kid. Name’s Xavier by the way. Oh and those were rhetorical questions for the record.” He said kicking Puncake again and then laughing as he squirmed away. “Well good luck in the wild. If they kicked a milksop like you out they’re in the right mind.” Xavier said then shooting out his tires with a shotgun, and getting into his SUV as he drove the way Puncake came.

I hope he kills them Puncake thought to himself. Assholes deserve it. Something rustled in the bushes and a young teenager in a green hoodie appeared coming to help him. “Anything I can do?” He asked. “Sleep.” Puncake muttered.

“Those shots are going to lure some of the dead ones. You can come with me if you want.” He said a bit hesitantly.

“You gonna eat me?” Puncake said still on the ground lifting his eyebrows.

“Uh no?” The kid said looking at him like he was crazy.

“Alright then. Just gimme a second. I’m right behind you. You can call me officer Puncake.”

    “Gus.”

“Well what are you waiting for Gus.” Puncake said his name in a annoying way as he got up and brushed some dirt and rocks off his uniform.

Gus rolled his eyes and started walking into the forest.

“So why did you decide to pick me up?”

    “You needed help.”

“Ha, so did all of the United States that I know of. I could like… Eat you or something.”

“And you dress up as a cop to lure little kids in? I’ve heard that before.”

    “Where?”

“A game.” (If you guess the game I'm thinking of correctly you get a segment for your character. :))

“Well—“ Puncake was about to thank him.

    “We’re here.” Gus interrupted.

They were standing in a field with stumps of trees, and in front of them was 7 foot wooden walls, four towers were situated at every corner. There gate was wide enough for a car, and the only thing blocking it was one of those parking gate things where you would put money in and it would open.

“Wow” “As I was saying… Thanks.” “I’ve seen better.” “…”

  • Gus looks at Puncake who gives no reply. “Oh you finally shut up. I was speechless too though… When I first saw this place I mean.”

They approached the gate and inside a booth surrounded by glass and some kind of metal was a teenage girl with a brown ponytail with her feet up on a desk. Her eyes were closed, and there was a gun beside her. Gus swore quietly. He banged on the glass. “Rylee. Wake the hell up. If we’re all dead when you’re on watch it’s on you.” He said loudly.

She woke up and looked embarrassed. She pressed a button and the miniature gate opened. “Please tell me there are grownups to baby sit you kids because I ain’t going to, and no way you survived this long.” Puncake said sarcastically. Gus turned and gave him the Luigi death stare, and then turned back and proceeded into a pleasant looking square of buildings made out of odd materials. From a tower in the bottom right corner of the square, a man in a SWAT uniform came down a ladder made of rope and planks, and was walking towards them.

“This is the boss, Pavel. Watch your mouth around him.” Gus warned him.

The man flipped the visor up to see more clearly. Puncake gave him his badge. “At your service sir.”

He looked at the badge and then chucked it over the wall. He looked up at Puncake in the eye and walked past him patting him on the back. “Watch on gate daily starting tomorrow.” He said without looking back and flipping his visor back. Puncake looked at Gus, and they both shrugged. Gus led him to his house, and then left. A man with a mustache was next door leaning on a pickup truck. He had a trucker cap on, and a mullet. “Howdy neighbor.”

“Don’t feel like talking right now.” Puncake said slamming the front door. He looked around the house thoroughly and then fell into a bed. Then the doorbell rang. “Not in the mood.” Puncake yelled.

The person at the door then banged on the door with their hand loudly. Puncake walked downstairs and opened it. It was the neighbor. He held something in his hand and threw it at Puncake. He caught it. “I thought you needed a beer. I’m Lenny, and sorry for bothering you, but there’s nothing to do in this shithole.”

Puncake sighed and motioned for him to come outside. They sat on the porch and talked a bit. Puncake decided he liked Lenny, he was friendly, and he was a cool guy. Once it got dark Lenny left and Puncake was left alone. Then he remembered that same day a guy in a SWAT uniform and a guy with a mustache were seen at the airport. Well at least they were still alive Puncake told himself.

The next day he was at his post wondering if anybody from John’s place would find this place, that Gus called Fort Pavel, the name of the SWAT guy. A short stocky man with wavy brown hair hopped the gate from the inside with a bow on his back. That was the hunter Larry. Puncake turned around and saw a guy sleeping on a bench near the sidewalk with a bottle in his hand. Lenny said to stay away from him, he was the town drunk.

He was glad Gus found him. Things would get better. Anything would be better than John’s dictatorship. Lost in his thoughts he didn’t notice a guy looking similar to Larry but a bit more muscled, and dirty approaching the gates. He had his hands in the air.

He spoke quickly. “You gotta let me in. It’s not safe out there… My friend… Zyphon… And I had another friend but he’s gone now. Please don’t tell anyone. Let me stay in your house or something. I’ll be quiet I swear. I just want to be safe. Puncake knew that if anyone found him he would be dead, and he couldn’t make the call to let him in. There were little to no houses left, the chances of this guy getting in were zilch. Maybe he could suggest John's place... Hmm..

“You can stay at my place. Just keep your head down.”

    “No room sorry.”

    “There’s a safe place off the highway…”

  • “There’s a safe place off the highway…

… Gus looks at Puncake who gives no reply. “Oh you finally shut up. I was speechless too though… When I first saw this place I mean.”

  • "There's a safe place off the highway..."

    Why not.

… Gus looks at Puncake who gives no reply. “Oh you finally shut up. I was speechless too though… When I first saw this place I mean.”

  • “No room sorry.”

I feel like it better to be honest with him.

… Gus looks at Puncake who gives no reply. “Oh you finally shut up. I was speechless too though… When I first saw this place I mean.”

  • “There’s a safe place off the highway…”

… Gus looks at Puncake who gives no reply. “Oh you finally shut up. I was speechless too though… When I first saw this place I mean.”

  • “There’s a safe place off the highway. They have room there. Sorry.” Puncake said. The guy frowned, and then turned around, his pack rustling as he did. “Thanks I guess.” Was all he said as he disappeared into the forest. It was the best chance the guy would have out here. He turned around to see if anyone was looking and he saw a guy dressed up like Pavel, it wasn’t SWAT armor but it was something that biters would have a hard time… Biting into. Lots of leather. He had short brown wavy hair and he smiled at Puncake giving him an appreciative nod and walked away hands in his pockets.

Weird. He prayed no one would sneak up behind him again or he would bash their head in. A few hours later and Larry had already returned with his bow slung over one shoulder, and a decent amount of small animals on the other. Puncake watched as Larry walked into his backyard and shut the fence gate. Puncake sighed. This was boring. He was so used to chasing bad guys and saving people that he wasn’t used to this peaceful place of doing nothing but watching.

He tipped his deputy hat in front of his face, leaned back and closed his eyes. He could see now why the girl was asleep. He swore that if anyone decided to come to the gate while he was asleep, it would be too soon, and they wouldn’t get things so easy as the lone backpacker that strode up that morning.

  • Chapter 5: Unexpected Backup

    Orion

    Day 10

Weeks ago he decided to be indifferent and stop caring. The apocalypse only strengthened his feeling, well, of not feeling that is. Of course he had lied about everything he had said on the walkie-talkie, but there was one part that he was reconsidering. Hundreds of them the boy had said. Good practice, but a waste of ammo. His mission was survival not helping people, but maybe they could give him something in return. If they’re in desperate times then he wondered how far they would go to survive. He scoffed, anyone would go as far as need be if it meant life and death.
He shoved the talkie into his boot, and spun his bladed Bo staff in his hands. Perhaps he wouldn’t need as much ammo. As quick as a flash he plunged it into a walker’s head that was impaled on rusty rebar’s. He was on a construction site practicing his balance on the beams, and construction. There were a lot of easy pickings, but some of the ones wearing hard hats were a challenge. Orion loved challenges. He found a worker near the top hiding out in a room. Coward.

The walkie talkie was on his corpse. He learned more from a log that was written near the first days. It said that the lower levels of the building were overwhelmed and they sent a team down the elevator. Not many made it, except two men called Cal, and Nathan. They drove a long way away to find help, but they lost contact and the log ended two days ago with the following entry.

William decided that he was hungry and left the safety of this room to find his lunchbox that he left a couple floors up. The dead must have caught the scent and found a way up because they’re at the door now and I’m looking out the window, seeing that hungry fat fuck at our doorstep. I’ve gotten to calling them sniffers. Anyway William ain’t looking for no sub now, he wants US. I can see it in his eyes, all of em. Either we starve or they eat us. Not a lot of options. Cal said Nathan got killed and they can’t find anybody. We’re on our own. Me, Terrence, and some stranger who calls himself Chief are left. Tonight we fight.

Only one body. Maybe the other two made it out. It didn’t matter though, it’s not like they could do anything for him. He descended the building and got into one of the big construction trucks. The keys were already inside and he began driving. There were lots of miles ahead of him…
A woman stood on the side of the road wearing a green cap, summer like clothes that revealed a lot of skin, and lots of bracelets. She gestured for him to stop. He would need all the help he would get but was it really worth splitting the prize? He would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in her.

  • [Stop]

He pressed the brake lightly and she looked relieved. Opened the passenger door and hopped in. She didn't seem to care much as to who he was, just happy to stop walking. "Hi." He tried to begin. She took her hat off and let her hair out. She flashed a smile at him, "Hey. Thanks." He had already started driving and staring at the road, and he could feel her eyes intently looking at him. He wasn't sure what to say but he went with "Where are we headed?"

    "Wherever you're going."

He could see her smile again. Pretty, but it kind of freaked him out especially with that response. "Actually... I'm not sure, I was thinking Florida's nice this time of year. My name's Orion." He said keeping his eyes on the road.

"Emily Andrews. I actually just came from that way, not the safest. But I'm sure nobody would screw with you."

    "Mhm" He says quietly.

The road was now surrounded by country. It was pretty quiet. They passed by a couple bodies strewn out on the ground, and burnt fields. Some corpses tried chasing but they were left a long way behind. "Why'd you pick me up?" She began.

He shrugged. "A lot of people may be dead, but chivalry isn't."

"Awful nice of you." There it was again, that infectious look of gratitude and something else.

    "Anyone would of stopped."

    "To kidnap me maybe."

"Don't be silly, it hasn't been that long."

"It feels like years since I had a good shower. I gotta change out of these dirty clothes. Mind stopping?"

"Yeah." He said stopping. She got out and pulled some other clothes out of her bag. He quickly glanced at the mirror and then darted his eyes back to the road. He silently swore in his head. What's wrong with you Orion. What the hell do you think you're doing. Next stop you're dropping her off. She stepped inside as he finished the thought in more comfortable and cleaner clothes. He tried to conceal what he saw but he felt as if she knew. Without thinking the engine started again and the journey continued. They were coming close to a city and he decided to drop her off at the outskirts. "Sorry, I have to go alone."

"You just drove me back the way I came. And now you're dropping me off on the curb like trash? Looks like chivalry is dead asshole." She said and slammed the passenger door. Orion jumped out of the car and ran towards her. He reached out, but she shrugged him off, and walked faster. "I'm sorry." He said.

"Then why? I just wanted company, I wanted to be around someone." He could see the tears coming to her eyes.

And then he pushed forward. One part of him was screaming at himself, the other a silent statue of joy. Their lips came together and he lost track of time. He felt her small smile against his face. He pulled away. "I'll be back. I promise." He said. She nodded and he got back in the car going towards the hotel. The streets began to fill with corpses. The hotel looked dull grey, and peeling. It looked unoccupied but it probably wasn't. He noticed a small figure standing in a window. He floored it and tried to run over as many as he could. There were hundreds. The truck eventually stopped and he pressed every button he saw hoping to release whatever it was he was carrying. He jumped out and pumped a few shotgun shells into the heads of the closest corpses.

The sound of bone breaking and blood spilling was satisfying as he made his way to the hotel. He got the bladed bo staff off his back and whipped it around, slashing heads, he lost track of time again, he slaughtered them by twos. But it wasn't like some badass hero that came to save the day that would kill a million zombies. He had always pictured it like that, but he was only human. His luck ended when a corpse decided to crawl and take a bite out of his leg while he was in combat.

He didn't even feel it. The adrenaline rushing through his body dulled the pain. He was covered in blood, and the corpses kept coming, but some lost interest. It left him a window to get to the building, when a group of people came out the front doors with guns. "You came!" A younger boy called, shooting a handgun at his side. The sound was deafening. "I couldn't just leave you here!" Orion yelled with a smile.

"You're crazy! In a good way." The kid yelled.

Despite the circumstances, Orion just laughed. He felt the blood going down his leg and he knew what came next. He let all of his values go down the toilet to save this three kids(he considered teenagers kids) and a baby. Not bad Orion. Not bad. The group downed very little of the horde, but for the most part they escaped unscathed. Their accuracy wasn't good enough to get a kill, but the sheer force of bullets knocked them down like a bowling ball at pins. An old lady was being eaten at the entrance which attracted some attention away. Poor lady...

"Follow me!" Orion yelled as he ran down the street toward the gas station. "WAIT! Where's NoHopeLeft!?" Ernesto yelled.

Orion looked back and Ernesto was running back. NoHopeLeft was in a dead end alley and the zombies were filing in a line inside to eat him. Some walked over each other to get to their meal. "HANG IN THERE!" Ernesto yelled charging in guns blazing.

"Kid! It's too..." He was going to say late but he wouldn't hear him. Orion rushed in with his shotgun blowing them to pieces. Ernesto was pinned up against a wall being grabbed by three walkers. In a corner full of trash was NoHopeLeft struggling to reload his gun as he backed up against the wall. The other ten walkers were coming for him in a disorderly line.

[Ernesto first. If I get him quick enough we can both help NoHopeLeft]

[Help NoHopeLeft. He's in the most danger. Ernesto can handle himself.]

    Oh no! D:

[Stop] He pressed the brake lightly and she looked relieved. Opened the passenger door and hopped in. She didn't seem to care much as to
