It is one of the Telltale Walking Dead Commandments: Thou shalt not diss or temper with thy Clementine's hat. Those who do shall suffer a severe consequence, such as brutal beatdown, or death.

Keep in mind that most of the victims have active power over Clementine, be it protective guardian, appointed supervisor, or jealous mugger. Therefore, AJ gets around that by being under the active power of Clementine.
It was her dad's at one point (he's dead), it's also likely that her mom touched it at one point (she's dead), and of course, I'm sure Sandra touched it or mentioned it as well (she's dead too).
Has Javi touched it and/or mentioned it?
SHIT! Clem can tell AJ to "Look for my hat." He's doing to die as well! (Maybe choices DO matter after all!)
The hat kills people that are alive and meet Clementine. Aj didn't exist at one point that the hat existed, meaning he wasn't alive. But, now he's alive. Two negatives = a positive = the hat is ineffective towards AJ.

What if the hat is just trying to protect Clem and by doing that it just kills everyone around her.
