TWD Television show
Can TWD TV Series be placed in our time? (The 2000's)
The only thing that makes me think that it is is that Glenn says something about the game Portal (Note: I'm only on Season 2

Apparently the entire Walking Dead universe starts somewhere around 2003.
I think Kirkman said he doesn't really care when it took place and he doesn't really have a solid answer. I may be wrong however so don't quote me on that.
i always assumed the walking dead timeline starts in 2003 because that's when the comic was made, I would say they're in 2007 currently in the comic.
IIRC, on the second season of the TV show they used a car from like...2011-2012, so either they don't really care about those (small?) details , or most likely, they knew it would be a bother to try and "re-create" 2003, hiding everything that wasn't invented up to that point and used real life timeline.
They don't have a set time start. All of the TWD have different times.
It is widely assumed now that TWD comic and game occur in 2003.
Nobody knows about the TV show, though.
Its modern time, Its not a period piece so when it starts isnt that important
"The Walking Dead takes place in our world, as if this stuff had started happening in October 2003 and continued from there. Now, (Issue 38) in the book...it's still only like... June 2004 at this point (If you're keeping track)." "[The Walking Dead] is set in modern times...but the book started in 2003 and only a year has passed in the book. But that doesn't mean it's 2004 in the book...maybe it's 2009...who knows...who really cares? I don't want to be specific." - Robert Kirkman
