Would The Walking Dead games be better if it wasn't from The Walking Dead universe?
I think so. If Telltale made The Walking Dead games unrelated to the comics, then they wouldn't have to be canon. And could make the games however they like. And instead of calling it, The Walking Dead, it could be called, Clementine, or something else. Maybe the games would not be as well known, but might be better overall. What do you think?

Nah. I love interconnected universes because it makes the world seem more interesting.
All it would do is give them a bit more freedom for the story. But with the general direction they've taken with the story so far, I don't know if more creative freedom would make that big of a difference in all honesty.
Even though they're confined to rules of Kirkman's comic, they actually have a pretty fair amount of elbow room to work with, but for the most part, they haven't really pushed those rules to the limits yet. They've stayed well within the bounds, and surprisingly enough, haven't really expanded too far out of them.
What Telltale is doing with the series is like using 2 rooms out of a house with more than 10. Cutting ties with the comic would be like buying an even bigger house than that. Sure, they'd have more space, but the question is: would they really be utilizing all of it?
I think being canon has lowered Telltale's ability to be more creative. Having to make sure everything matches up or doesn't go beyond the comic is actually really restricting. And if Telltale would spend more time working on the games then they could expand and utilize more things.
No, I like that it takes place in the same universe as Rick's story, but isn't canon to the comic story
Yes they would they can be in there own zombie Apocalypse universe and they wont have any boundries that robert kirkman has set them to follow.
I definitely agree. Skybound has treated the Game like a fan fiction
But you need to understand, Telltale doesn't seem like they're looking to make they're own original game. They seem very content with adapting other people's work such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Borderlands, Minecraft, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, CSI, and Fables. Adapting is what they do and goddamnit they are good at it!
As a fan of Telltale, Robert Kirkman, and TWD, I think the game being to connected the comic series is a lot more appealing for someone like me. Telltale doesn't even have to use comic characters, but they choose to because they enjoy it and assume that the fans will to.
Also, people that are fans of the game might get anxious to see more TWD, so what do they turn to while waiting for the next season to release? Well, being fans of TWD game, I reckon they might see interest in TWD comics or the TV show.
In response to finding the universe "restricting," there's very little they have to take into account with this series.
That's about it.
I wouldn't play it if it wasn't backed in someway by the comics. for that very reason, I think why the fear of the walking dead is going to fail: the true fans that been following the comics since 2003 have to start over again and cant relate
