He picked up the multiple papers and stacked them neatly where he could get back to them later. He opened his door and headed out, down the staircase. He walked through the empty halls into the kitchen, where he received a pleasant surprise. His mother and father were both sitting at the table, conversing about something. Binary approached.
"What are you guys doing here? Shouldn't you be at work?" He asked. His father looked at his mother and laughed a little under his breath.
"Can you not remember anything? The reapings are today, everyone's off work." He answered. Binary scratched the back of his head.
"I, uh, I knew that. I was just testing you." Binary lied.

"So that's it? Your just leaving me like this?" Katrina cried.
"Katrina, you need to pull yourself together. I have my reasons." He said.
"Just tell me, what did I do?" She asked.
"Katrina-" He started.
"What did I do?" She said again, felling the tears begin to roll down her cheeks.
"What didn't you do?" He said, and just as he had come he disappeared into the crowd. Katrina wiped the tears from her face and took a deep breath. There would be time to be sad latter, right now she had things to do.
It was a particularly dreary day in district four. Dark clouds covered the sky, blocking out the happy rays of the sun. It was almost as if mother nature had a sick sense of humor. The distant roar of thunder confirmed her suspicions.
"Next?" A peace keeper asked. Katrina obliged and stepped forward, the peace keeper gripped her arm and jabbed a needle into her skin. she slightly winced as the needle entered, but tried to mostly keep it hidden. "Go on ahead." The peace keeper said, and Katrina walked into the maddened mass that had assembled before her. She walked until she stood in the section with the rest of the fifteen year olds. She swept a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear as she recalled what had happened. She had once again been dumped by someone she'd loved, as was her curse. It seemed as if everyone she fell in love with never loved her back in the way she had thought. A clap of thunder brought her back around just in time to see the escort walk up to the microphone.
"Lets get this started, shall we?" The escort rushed, not wanting to get her makeup wet. "As always, ladies first." She said as she walked over to a glass bowl full of paper slips. Why do they even use these? Theres always a volunteer. Never the less, the escort pulled out a slip, smiling to the crowd before reading off the name.
"Katina Hornburg!" She shouted. Katrina stood anchored in place waiting for the volunteer, but judging by the awkward silence that had fallen over the crowd, there wouldn't be one. The escort must have sensed this to since she welcomed Katrina to the stage. Katrina forced on a brave face, although she couldn't tell if it was working. She mounted the stairs and took her place next to the escort. The escort looked her over, with what looked like disgust, then turned away.
"Next for the gentlemen!" she said as she walked over to the other glass bowl. Katrina zoned out for a moment, looking out into the giant crowd. For so long, she'd been down there looking up at the unlucky fool on the stage... Now she was the unlucky fool.
"I volunteer!" A voice yelled. Katrina looked over and saw a blonde haired, blue eyed man climb the stairs and wave to the crowd, smiling as he walked over and took a place next to Katrina. He didn't even look at her.
"Do something." He said.
"Excuse me?" She asked.
"Do something. You look stupid just standing there." He said.

Doing nothing does not sound like a good idea, so it's either smiling or waving. And given her current emotional state, I guess a smile could look visibly forced. Waving on the other hand... well, if her doofus of a district partner can do a good waving, I have hopes that she can do it too.
