Black screen on launch (PS3 - Black Screen)

Hey there!

I'm experiencing start-up issues when I try to open TftB - essentially that upon selecting the game from the menu, the system crashes (gets stuck on a black screen) and won't respond to anything other than a hard reset. I am a season pass holder, and I downloaded each episode the day they were made available and had no problems while playing them. The choices appeared to save accurately and the game didn't corrupt while saving to the best of my knowledge. I played the second episode three times over the first couple of days after the release with no problems, but trying to access the game today is giving me the black screen.

I had the same issue with TTGoT, except the game in that instance did freeze mid-play, which I'm assuming corrupted the save data and caused the issue. I deleted the game data for GoT and it resolved the issue, but I'd really rather not delete the data for TftB as well, as I have several save files with different choices that I'd like to maintain.

Are there any other ways I can try to resolve this issue? Are there any ways to prevent this from happening in the future? As it has now happened to two TTG games, I'm worried that whatever issue is going on with them might end up affecting the other games I've purchased and don't want to lose that data, or end up having the same issue crop up again if I do delete this save data and start over. Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

I apologize for any difficulties caused by this. If you are experiencing the crashing when you attempt to start the game from the PS3's Home menu, please try deleting the game from your Console, then re-download it from the Playstation Store. (This will not affect your save data)

If you are experiencing the crashing when you attempt to start Episode 2 only, it may be caused by a corrupted save file. Can you please clarify how many save slots you are currently using in Tales From The Borderlands?

If you experienced a similar issue with Game of Thrones, and were able to resolve it by deleting the 'game data', could you please clarify if you deleted the Game Data Utility file for the game, or the Save Data Utility file for the game?

  • Hi Mike, thanks for getting back to me.

I just tried deleting the game and re-downloading from the PS Store, but the issue has not resolved itself - the screen still freezes black when I try to launch it from the PS menu.

I'm currently using four save slots for TftB (three were completed to the end of E2, one to the end of E1). For GoT I was using three slots.

For the issue with GoT, I deleted the Saved Data Utility for the game (after noting that other players in the support forums had successfully done it after the game crashed for them) and was able to play again without issue.

I apologize for any difficulties caused by this. If you are experiencing the crashing when you attempt to start the game from the PS3's Home

Can you please clarify if when you re-downloaded the game, that you also re-downloaded the update file for the game? If so, could you please try deleting the game one more time, then when you re-download it, try not downloading the latest update file when you first start the game, and see if you are then able to successfully start an episode using your save files.

Unfortunately I do not have any other potential solutions at this time. I have not heard of this particular issue of the game crashing when starting it from the PS3 XMB before, but I will make sure to pass the information along to the team for further investigation. If you would like, you can also try backing up your save data to the Playstation Cloud Storage, then try restarting the game, and see if you are then able to successfully start the game.

  • Thread: Game freezing

My Ps3 version of Tales From the Borderlands freezes before reaching the title screen. What can I do to fix this? I have re downloaded the game twice and it hasn't done anything.

  • Thread: Black screen glitch

    So there was an update that fixed this glitch a few days ago. Then I had to do another update today, froze my PS3. I restarted my system, tried launching TFTB. Again I am faced with the Black Screen. What do I do? I wanna play tomorrow ;-;

Can you please clarify what version number of the game you are currently updated to? You can find this by hovering over the game's icon from your XMB, then pressing Triangle, and then select 'Information' from the sidebar that appears. This will show you what version number you are on. Also, how many save slots are you currently using in-game, and do they all contain saves through the end of Episode 2?

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

Can you please clarify when it freezes? Do you see the Borderlands logo or anything before it freezes, or does the game not load after selecting the icon from your PS3's XMB? Also, can you please clarify how many save slots you are currently using in-game, and what country/region you are currently located in?

  • Fixed the glitch but I needed to delete all 4 of my saves. I am in North America. What do I do if this happens again?

Were all four of your Save Slots fully completed up to the end of Episode 2 when you experienced the issue? Also, had anything changed since the last time you played the game? Did you delete and re-download the game, or update the game to the latest version?

  • Okay, I'll answer the questions in order to avoid confusion. 3 out of 4 were up to the end of episode 2. the other one was in the middle of episode 2. Actually, yes. A few things changed, sometimes audio froze and/or skipped while autosaving, the echo eye wouldnt let me scan anything that wasnt required to continue the episode, and some other minor issues. I delete and redownloaded the game 3 times, none of them fixed it. Deleted my save data and the game loaded after uninstalling and reinstalling.

  • Hi! I have the same problem here. I have the version 1.04 with 3 saves and had no problem before today's update. Can you help? Thanks!

  • Hi!

I've played both episodes, and I downloaded the third episode and suddenly the game did this to me, too.
We've uninstalled and reinstalled, and even WITHOUT installing the update file, it still turns black and freezes.
It's got to be something with episode 3. I really want to play and I've already purchased it.

I made an account on here just to tell you that it's happening to a lot of people. =/

  • I'm having this problem too! I downloaded episode 3 (PS3) and now I can't even open the software without the screen going black and freezing my whole console. I had to turn it off and back on to retry, but it was to no avail. I deleted and reinstalled the game and it still doesn't work. I made sure I have the latest updates, but still nothing.

  • Hey I'm experiencing this as well! I am currently re-downloading all of the game data. Unlike others here though, I was able to play through the 3rd dlc after downloading it through the game itself. After finishing the 3rd episode, I quit the game and took a break. This morning I wanted to try going through it again, but that is when I first experienced the crash. I going to first try launching the game (after re-downloading it) without the update data, and then with the update date to see it I find any solutions.

I apologize for any difficulties caused by this. If you are experiencing the crashing when you attempt to start the game from the PS3's Home

  • So the game can't launch with all 3 episodes with or without the update, but it can launch if it only has episode 1 and 3 without the update, as soon as the update is there, I can't launch the game via black screen. So I recommend only (re)downloading episode 1 and 3, (not 2) and not downloading the update (this will force you to sign out of psn, but will allow you to play it.) I hope this works for more people.

I think the problem lies either in the update, or with the game not being able to launch with a total of 3 episodes attached to it. Maybe both.

I'm having the same issue. I was able to play episode 3 once. Now it won't start anymore. I tried deleting the game and downloaded the content (all three episodes) again but this didn't seem to help. Patch 1.04 was installed both when the game did work and now that it doesn't.

  • Thread: Game won't start PS3

Hey guys, I'm a disappointed fan of Telltale games. I follow their work for a long time, and buy always season pass of a lot of games. TWD, which I have a few problems, TWAU, I have no problem at all. But both, Game of Thrones and Tales From the Borderlands, i have major issues.
I'm here to talk about Tales from the Borderlands, of course.
I downloaded the Catch a Ride episode, before that I had two downloaded files. Never got any problem playing. But, i freaking downloaded and I had to upload the freaking update 1.whatever. Just like any other episode, the problem is, when i stopped playing my first playthrough and started a third one, the game just black out.
I turn the PS3 off, and the next day i couldn't play the game anymore. When i click on Tales from the Borderlands, freeze on the blackscreen, entering the game.
Same problem with Game of Thrones, but of course, there is already a huge thread about this.
    I can't open neither games.
What I found out and suspect it might is: The number of save files. When you pass three, the game just freaking freeze.
Or, is the update. I discover that when i delete the whole game and download again, and don't install the episodes updates, the game go "smoothly". Well, as far smoothly goes. Some times de character keep saying the same words, others, the image just freeze too.
But, at least, the game starts.
I'm really hoping you guys find a freaking solution. I read that some of your games had similar problems, and I really expect you guys fix this. I will wait to the next episode and download, so I can install the update of the current episode and see if the problems stay. If it does, you just lost a loyal costumer.
I know the one person that answers the threads can't do much, or at least I think, but, just want to talk about the issues and say what I have found out.
Sorry, english is not my native language

  • I'm using 2 save slots. One should now contain all three episodes, the other only the first two. I have no means of checking if those save files are intact, however.

My save game utility folder on my console displays 1 file for TFtB, 5772 KB.

I am also from Germany if that's relevant.

If you are currently experiencing this issue, we have had reports from players stating they were able to resolve the issue by deleting and re-downloading the game from their PS3, then starting the game and updating it to the latest version, they were able to continue playing. (Please note your save files will not be harmed in the process.)

Could you please clarify what you mean by 'worked for a little bit'? Were you able to play the game successfully until you exited the game? Or did the game revert to a black screen while you were playing?

  • edited July 2015

I was able to play successfully for a little while after reinstalling and updating, but then after I got out of it and came back later I was unable to play. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it again after that, but that failed as well. I wasn't able to play at all that time. It just went immediately back to the black screen. Unfortunately, the only way I can get it to come up without the black screen is if I delete my save file.

I'm not even sure deleting my save and starting again will fix the issue. I'm afraid to start all over and have it happen again, but I'm open to trying as soon as I find the time to. I just wish I could get it working with my old save.

Edit: I'd like to update and say that I've started playing again with a completely new save and things seem to be going well. It even seems to have fixed the lag issues I was having while playing. I'm hoping the black screen issue stays away now. I've got my fingers crossed that it will.

  • Alright I too have this problem and I too have more than one save flies and 2 of them outta 4 are on episode 2. I also tried this deleting and reinstalling with no luck however I was able to play the game without updating it for a bit until a massive crash happened. Now the game wasn't corrupted but when I started it again I couldn't even get to the "you have an update" screen so it's back the black screen thing... Hope this new info helps with fixing this dumb problem.
