  • Again, like I said, I know from experience. It all depends on character personality though. Besides that, I just feel like it's the safest all around option no matter what. A good happy medium, for me at least.

Torvin will tell Kyra the truth about their plans, but will try to play it off as a joke

The next Torvin part will reveal just how bad this idea was. Perhaps it wasn't bad at all. Or perhaps it was a terrible, terrible idea that sealed the fate of several characters. All I can say for now is, this was a major choice for Torvin and it will change a lot for him, for Garthon, for the Greyjoys and for the Hoares.

Garthon will give up his weapons

No surprise here. Needless to say, this is not the most important choice in the chapter, it was more put in so that I am able to offer you a choice here, but it will have a little bit of influence on this storyline.

The next part could have been finished yesterday, if I would have been able to write at all on Sunday. Unfortunately, Sunday was Lord of the Rings night, and one does not simply skip Lord of the Rings night. I once again realized how superior the extended version is, compared to the theatrical version and especially how much longer. Anyway, the next part will be a John Gutten part and I will try my best to finish it today.

  • John

Gutten and Janae walked the path to the castle in an uncomfortable silence. The woman had an almost characteristic frown on her face, although this time it was clearly directed at him. Sure, this wasn't the first time she was angry at him, but this time it felt worse than ever, because this time he needed her friendship more than ever.

“Janae...”, he mumbled and received a glare from her. He let out sigh. “I'm sorry” She slightly shook her head at this sentence, but stopped for a moment as her gaze fell on the barely healed cuts on his face. “Do you have any idea how much worse our situation just got?”, she asked.

“It was just a bit of money”, Gutten tried to defend himself, but immediately noticed that he had said something bad. Temari had a similarly upset look on his face as John proclaimed that he would give some of his money to Aylard. The only one who had been happy about this was Behara and her bright smile had almost been enough to make up for Janae's frown. Almost.

“A bit of money...”, Janae repeated toneless. “Are you out of your fucking mind, John?” He raised an eyebrow and pressed his lips together as he accidentally moved the cut flesh on his face. She still noticed it and her facial expression got slightly less hostile for a moment. “I don't have to explain our situation again, do I?”, she asked, but continued before he could answer with a clueless look. “We arrive at our destination, a destination we invested quite some money to get to, but we only have half of our men with us. Temari needs at least another week of rest before we can trust him to hold his own in a fight. And you...”

Without warning, she gave him a somewhat hard punch in the stomach. It wasn't comparable to the ones he got from Bear, not even comparable to the ones he was used from Janae, but it was still enough to make him stagger backwards. She let out a sigh. “As expected, you are not okay. You are just the toughest son of a bitch I know”, she said and Gutten wasn't sure if she just complimented him or not. “In any way, an experienced fighter would kill you with ease in your current shape”

John knew, she was right and he had to give her a reluctant nod. “This leaves me as the only fully capable member of our group, a group of six. The acting lord hired six of us, he gets one and two half”, Janae continued sullenly. “It's quite likely that he will break out of the contract and I couldn't even blame him. Which would force us to find a new employer”

“We'll find something. We always do”, John said, trying to sound optimistic, even though he felt worse than ever. It wasn't so much the absence of Cass which pained him, it was the absence of sadness, of real sadness. She had been important to him, even if he didn't knew her very well. At least that was what he tried to tell himself. And now she was gone and while he was sad, this sadness felt superficial to him. It felt wrong.

“Something?”, Janae asked mockingly. “In the deepest parts of the Reach? I don't want to travel to Oldtown, so this would force us to leave this kingdom” John gave her a short nod. Oldtown wasn't exactly his favourite place in Westeros either. They could return to the dornish marches... No, he quickly stopped thinking about this. The Marches were one of the worst places he ever visited. Hundreds of leagues, consisting of stony plains, moors, flat grasslands, the air coming out of the hottest corners of the Seven Hells, filled with marauding dornish fighters, ambushing anyone who dared to get too close to the dornish border without having the correct paperwork. He remembered the hostile tone between the Reach and the Stormlands, allies in name only, unified solely in their common hatred against the so-called dornish threat. And what a threat they had been... in some nights, Gutten still saw the long rows of hanged men and women, whose only crime had been that they were dornishmen. No, he would never return to this place.

“We could go back to the Free Cities. Pentos or Tyrosh”, he suggested and Janae slowly shook her head. “John, after what you did today, we don't have enough money to return to the Free Cities. It was already bad that you gave Sammy the money, but today you gave away even more” Her gaze slightly hardened again, even though John saw the subtle hint of worry as she mentioned Samantha. “This is not the Free Cities, where things sort out somehow. Here, you have to plan if you want to survive”

John knew, this was what Janae had been doing all her life. Planning to survive. Born in slavery, forced to fight in the pits for all of her life, killed a dozen wise masters during her escape. Gutten was proud to admit that he participated in this last point. But even after she was free, Janae hadn't stopped planning her next steps. Things had been a bit easier for her and for him in the Free Cities, but ever since they returned to Westeros, his maiden fair was on the edge.

He let out a sigh and stopped walking. Janae continued for a moment, but stopped as he cleared his throat. “Janae, wait a moment”, he urged her. She stopped and he put a hand on her shoulder, noticing how tensed up she was. She slightly shivered as she looked at him. “We're going to make it, just as always”, he promised her and had the opinion that he even managed to convince her a little bit. Or perhaps he just managed to convince himself. Janae gave him a weak nod and slightly shook his hand off, continuing her way to the castle.

They arrived at the castle a few, uncomfortable minutes later. Other castles would have had at least half a dozen guards at their gates, especially at such a late hour. The castle of Raylansfair only had one guard, a young boy, probably only half as old as Gutten, perhaps even younger. He had olive skin and dark, curly hair. Despite his age, he was already almost as tall as Gutten, even though he was far thinner. Despite the late hour, he wasn't relaxing, instead he was standing guard in the truest sense of the word, with an eagerness that hinted at him being a very new guardsman.

“Stop right there””, he called and his voice made him sound slightly older than he really was. “Tell me your name and your reason to come here!” John slightly smirked at the sight of the enthusiastic boy and took a step forwards. “My name is John Gutten, I am a mercenary. This is Janae, my second-in-command”, he introduced them. “Lord Harris Flowers is expecting us”

The boy narrowed his eyes and seemed to think about this. “Lord Harris hasn't mentioned a John Gutten or a Janae when he told me about the people he was expecting. In fact, he does not wish to be disturbed at the moment”, he said sternly and Janae let out an annoyed sigh. “Listen, boy, we haven't travelled through the whole kingdom just to get stopped by a badly informed guard”, she growled. “Now let us in. We're willing to give up on our weapons, the whole usual procedure, but we really need to talk to Lord Harris”

The young guard shook his head, instead he looked at the spear that rested firmly in his hand. “I'm sorry, but I have clear orders not to...”, he started to say, before a new voice cut them off. “Let them in, Federico”, a woman behind him said. She wasn't much older than the guard, but something in the way she moved made Gutten realize that she was a lot more experienced. She was good-looking, with light brown hair that fell to her shoulders and eyes in the same colour, although Gutten could see that she hadn't slept for some time.

The young guard immediately stood attention and saluted in front of her. “Captain!”, he greeted her with a respectful tone in his voice. The woman gave him a tired nod, before shifting her attention towards Gutten and Janae. “You are John Gutten?”, she asked and Gutten gave her a nod. “Yes, m'lady”, he confirmed. Instead of answering to him, the woman looked back at the young guard. “Federico, Lord Harris expects these people”

The guard's face got pale as he looked back at John. “Oh... I... I did not know that! I'm sorry, Ser!”, he apologized and the woman let out a sigh. “You couldn't know it, because we expected them last week”, she said with a sharp tone in her voice. Gutten gave her an apologizing smile, or at least it was meant to be apologizing. Her cold glare proved to him that he failed with showing this intention. “We had a few problems on our way”, Janae explained and the woman shrugged slightly. “Lord Harris will want to hear your story. Frankly, I don't give a damn”, she answered and yawned loudly.

“Long day, huh?”, Janae remarked and the woman gave her a tired nod. “You can say that again. We have thirty unexpected visitors from Mander's Mouth here, assholes who act as if they own the damn place already. Lord Harris left it to me to entertain them” She let out a sigh and extended her hand, giving John and Janae a firm handshake. “Excuse my manners. Nora Recton, Captain of the guard. The boy next to me is Federico Snow, one of our newest guardsmen”

“Captain of the guard, huh?”, Gutten remarked. “You're very young for such a position. How old are you?” Nora narrowed her eyes at this remark, glaring at him in a hostile way. “Nineteen”, she hissed. “You got a problem with that?” Gutten raised both of his hands in surprise. Insulting her had not been his intention. “Not at all”, he answered truthfully. “I was just a bit surprised. The youngest captain of the guard I ever met was ten years older. Well done, m'lady”

This seemed to calm her down a little bit again and she gave him a proud nod. “I have to thank Lord Harris for this promotion. And our current lack of better candidates”, she answered with a grin, before looking at the young guard. “Federico, please escort these two to Lord Harris”, she ordered him.

Federico gave her a surprised look. “Captain?”, he asked. “What's with the gate?” Nora let out a sigh and leant against the castle wall. “I take care of the gate. I really need a break from Lord Hobert's men”, she explained. “Go on, don't let him wait”

He saluted again and gave John and Janae a handwave, ordering them to follow him, while Nora leant back against the wall, yawning again and Gutten felt a bit of pity for her. Being a captain of the guard in such a situation can never be easy, but her age certainly didn't help in making it any easier for her.

He shifted his attention back to Federico, who was walking next to them, leading them across the courtyard. Gutten heard loud laughter and the sound of music playing from one of the barracks. Federico followed his gaze and pointed at the building. “Lord Hobert's guards live there for now”, he explained. “Lord Hobert?”, Janae answered immediately. “What happened to Lord Harris?”

“Lord Hobert of Mander's Mouth”, Federico explained quickly. “He thinks of himself as the rightful lord of Raylansfair and arrived yesterday, together with half of his guard” “You don't think he is right with his claim?”, Janae asked and Federico shrugged. “I don't care who the lord will be. Robert Raylan, Harris Flowers, Hobert of Mander's Mouth. What does that mean for a common guardsman? I wish for a lord who brings stability to this town, a good lord, strong and just, but also kind”

“You probably also want him to shit gold, don't you?”, Gutten asked with a light chuckle, causing Federico to glare at him. “Do you think it's funny to wish for a good lord?”, he asked. Gutten shook his head. “Funny? No. Naive, maybe, but understandable. And not funny at all. Simply a bit unrealistic”

“Lord Robert had been a good lord, for all I know”, Federico said. “At least that's what the others told me. I joined the guard under Lord Harris, never met the old lord” “So, your name is Federico Snow?”, Gutten asked and the boy gave him a nod. “Quite a strange name for a Northerner”

“I hear that all of the time”, Federico answered. “I am a Northerner from my father's side, but my mother was a dornishwoman and named me after her grandfather” For a moment, John caught Janae smirking at this explanation and he shot her a curious look. She raised an eyebrow and slightly grinned at him. “What? Reminds me of that stupid joke. What happens when a Northerner meets a dornishwoman?”, she said and chuckled. As soon as she noticed that neither John nor Federico were smiling back at her, her usual frown returned. “Eh, you probably wouldn't get it either way”, she growled and made it clear that the small talk was over.

Federico quickly lead them to a small tower, the only one this castle had. It was a broad tower, built to live in rather than to guard something. Before Federico could open the large door that lead inside, it was opened from the inside. A pale and thin young woman stepped out of the door. She had dark brown hair and eyes of the same colour and while she was pretty in a simple kind of way, a long, thin and fresh scar next to her left eye disfigured her face. The woman nearly recoiled the moment she saw them, looking at Gutten in an intimidated and scared way, but quickly seemed to calm down a bit. She stepped aside, making way for Federico and the mercenaries, before stepping out of the door behind them, quickly walking down the steps.

“Who was this odd girl?”, John asked and a frown appeared on Federico's face. “Jenna Harking”, he answered. “Servicemaid in the castle. Apparently she got attacked by some crazy killer only a few days ago” This sentence caused a frown not unlike Janae's to appear on John's face as he exchanged a glance with her. “Have they killed the man who did this?”, he asked and Federico shook his head. “The city guard tries to find him, but I don't know how much I can expect from them”, he explained.

“If he gets even near one of my people, he won't be a problem anymore”, Gutten growled. “I will gut him with my own bare hands if necessary” “Only if I don't get him first”, Janae remarked coldly. Federico slightly coughed, causing them to shift their attention back to him. “We're here”, he said, pointing at a door in front of them. He slowly knocked at the door, not receiving an answer at first. Only as he raised his hand a second time, a deep, pleasant sounding voice sounded from the other side. “I heard you the first time”, someone said from the inside. Federico lowered his hand again, instead pushing the door open.

The room behind him was warm, comfortable, with a fire burning in a fireplace and a man sitting in front of it, in a large armchair. He had brown hair and a bushy brown beard and his hands rested on his knees as he looked up. Green eyes glared at John and Janae. “Who do we have here, Federico?”, he asked.

“Lord Harris, this is John Gutten and his second-in-command Janae, two mercenaries who claim to have business with you”, Federico introduced them. For a moment, Harris just looked at them, before a light, tired smile appeared on his face. “Ah, finally...”, he mumbled. “Come in”

John and Janae stepped through the doorway and Federico closed the door behind them. For a moment, the mercenaries and the acting lord just looked at each other, a hint of disapproval seen on the man's face. “I have expected you last week”, he finally said.

“We know and we are very sorry about this, mylord”, Janae quickly said. “There have been complications during our journey” Harris took a glance at Gutten's scarred face and gave them a nod. “I can see that. What happened?”

“We have been attacked by a group of bandits, just a few days south of here”, Janae explained and Harris let out a sigh. “Bandits near Raylansfair...”, he mumbled, looking to the ground. “How much worse can this day get?” He quickly looked up again, directly at Janae. “Have they killed one of yours?”, he asked. She shook her head, causing John to press his lips together.

“However, there is still a problem. Two of our men, Jaro and I'Lian have separated from us to follow a mission of their own. We have expected them back by now, but...”, Janae started to explain, but Harris cut her off with a hand gesture. “Please, spare me the excuses”, he growled.. She gave him a nod before continuing. “One of our men, Temari, he is badly wounded. He needs at least another week of rest before he can work with full capacity. Another one of our members, Samantha Ducard, left our group to pursue two of your knights to Oldtown”

This caused Harris' eyes to open wide. “Lucas and Leonard?”, he asked and Janae gave him a nod. “What have they...” This time it was up to Janae to cut him off. “Took a girl from the inn we stayed at with them. Samantha tries to get her back to her father”, she explained. Harris gave her a sullen nod. “They have a very important mission. I hope this Samantha won't stop them”, he growled, before raising from his chair. “So, you're telling me I get half the men I expected?”

Janae gave him an apologizing nod. “Mylord, we can understand if you want to break out of the contract”, she said slowly, regretfully. Harris looked at her for a moment in silence, slowly raising an eyebrow. “And why should I do that?”, he asked to Gutten's surprise.

“I mean, I can understand why you fear this. To be honest, under better circumstances, I would throw you out of my castle for this audacity”, he said, albeit his voice sounded more tired than threatening. “Unfortunately, I am running out of options. I have hired you because of your reputation. You are loyal and you do a job without asking too many questions” A slight smile appeared on his face. “And I get you for half of the price”

Janae gave him a nod before Gutten could say anything. “That is acceptable, Lord Harris”, she agreed. “Would you mind telling us why you have sent for us?” Harris gave her a pleased smile and started to walk towards his desk, commanding them to follow. Gutten saw a map lying on the table, a map which clearly showed Raylansfair and it's surroundings. Several spots around the town were marked with circles. Harris pointed at one of these circles, the one that was closest to the forest.

“Tomard's Tower”, he explained. “Built by Lord Tomard Raylan over five hundred years ago, destroyed by the Ironborn a hundred years ago, now nothing more than a ruined monument to one of House Raylan's more forgettable lords” He caught Gutten's curious look and smirked slightly. “I have stumbled upon an old document, detailing an interesting secret about the ruined tower. Something is buried beneath it”

“Something?”, Janae asked and Harris gave her a nod. “I don't know exactly what it is, but the document I have found hinted at tons of gold which went missing from Raylansfair's vaults around the same time”, he explained, catching Gutten's questioning stare. “Yes, I know more about the circumstances behind the disappearance of the gold. It wasn't stolen, but rather taken by Lord Merrett Raylan, probably to hide it from the Ironborn. A document I stumbled upon recently revealed it's location, at leats I have good reason to think so. Tomard's Tower, a place Lord Merrett had been obsessed”

“So, you want us to excavate this treasure?”, John asked. “Indeed”, Harris confirmed. “I have chosen you specifically because you have a reputation to loose if you betray my trust. I am surrounded by enemies and the few who are undoubtedly loyal to me need to stay close to me. You on the other hand...”

“I think I understand your reasons, Lord Harris”, Janae said. “So, when do you want us to do this?” She looked out of the window, where a few fading rays of sunlight were still visible. Soon, the night would gather. “As soon as possible, of course”, Harris answered. “I leave it up to you if you want to try it tonight, but I need this treasure tomorrow at latest. I need the gold in the things to come”

[Try to excavate the treasure tonight] TREASUREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'll be back to edit in my thoughts, I'm going to dinner. Stay tuned.

“Who was this odd girl?”, John asked and a frown appeared on Federico's face. “Jenna Harking”, he answered. “Servicemaid in the castle. Odd girl? That's a starter. There's a lot more words that can be used to describe her.

“However, there is still a problem. Two of our men, Jaro and I'Lian have separated from us to follow a mission of their own. We have expected them back by now, but...”, Janae started to explain, but Harris cut her off with a hand gesture. “Please, spare me the excuses”, he growled.. It's funny why Harris doesn't question why they took a girl.

  • [Try to excavate the treasure in the morning] A treasure, aye? I wonder what exactly does Harris plan to do with it... Anyway, thinking about what kind of people are lurking near Raylansfair (+the predator) I think it's better to wait for the morning.

  • Is it possible to create char wich past is linked with another char here?

  • Yes, in general this would be possible. However, in some occasions this can give me problems with the planned story for the character your character would be connected to, for example if I have already planned said characters storyline in greater detail or if they are set to die soon. Because of this, it would be for the best if you could write me a PM in which you detail your idea, then I can tell you if it is possible or not. In the end it depends mainly on the character you'd like to link your character to.
