My experience isn't as painful as yours, but uh... sooo... I had a friend who really wanted me to start going out with someone and a… mores 'a target' she pointed out my other good friend. He was always funny and kind, I liked him as a friend, but after her suggestion basically started to pay more attention to him. After a few months of torturing myself I tried to talk to him about my crush and he just stopped me. It was really embarrassing and stupid.
But the weird thing is that we're still best friends. :] I hope he doesn't remember that moment...
I just found it interesting how you and John saved your friendships with those girls and it reminded me of my own.

Ha...ha...It did. It's called Mekakucity Actors...it's terrible. As a fan of the original source material, I wasn't pleased. There were just a few problems, big ones, that made me hate the anime adaptation.
The story is awesome though! I have the manga, light novel, listened to the songs, and...watched it. Definitely worth investing time into listening to the songs to try and piece everything together. My amazing best friend Flarez and I kept constantly making theories about it.
