Smart or Dumb: Carver

Carver is generally depicted as a smart man who runs a successful community. Many would debate that he's dumb one for having his community shut down by an 11 year old and not reaching for the gun at his hip when so close to being beat down. However he is one of the best trackers TWD has ever seen. He was able to track the groups' exact location within 5 days all on intuition. In Harm's Way Carver seemed incompetent while Carver in A House Divided seemed to be one of the most intelligent survivors in the game series. What's your opinion on him?

  • Carver is smart, but I still do not understand why he had special access to the Clementine.

  • Personally, Carver is not as smart as he likes to think he is. He may have found the Cabin Group who had fled from him, but considering that they didn't cover their tracks very well (the gunshots from Nick and Pete, the photograph from Sarah, Pete's corpse, the blood trail on the bridge from Matthew, and choosing to leave at dawn instead of right away), it's no wonder they got caught eventually.

And as for Carver's dictatorship from what we've seen in Episode 3, it can be summed up as a being schoolyard bully who uses brute force and threats to get his way, lacking the cunning and pragmatism that would enable his crew to have more faith in his ability to lead the community, and just being evil for the sake of being evil without thinking of the consequences. Provided below is why I believe that Carver was not very smart:

    • He kills Reggie, a loyal subject who has Stockholm Syndrome, over berries. Later on you find out that it was all a ruse to get him killed from the beginning, due to having helped the Cabin Group escape originally. What he could have done instead of killing Reggie is to take advantage of his condition and use it as a weapon to assert his authority and control over his people.
    • He spares (or at least fails to finish off) Kenny, a newcomer who does nothing but cause trouble ever since his arrival, refusing to take orders, causes a fight among his people, inadvertently draw in walkers that almost gets Clementine, his admired subject, killed, and helps the Cabin Group to escape once again. Had he been smarter, Carver would have had Kenny lynched by his people with Reggie backing him up due to Kenny's irrationally distaste for him, and Kenny's poor status with the people and work ethics, as well as his execution would have been seen as a huge favour to the community.
    • He ambushes the Cabin Group ALONE (where the hell was Troy?) during their escape after activating the PA system to create a diversion, and is quickly killed once Clementine returns and distracts him, with Kenny finishing the job. Had Carver brought his men with their weapons ready, the escapees would have not stood a chance in surviving and would be forced to stay or risk facing execution right there and then.

Of course, all of these alternative decisions Carver could have made really comes down to whether his men are actually loyal to him as opposed to fearing him rather than opposing him. However, seeing how quickly his community was destroyed a day or so after the Cabin Group returned, it's likely due to how terrible Carver is as a dictator and a human being. In the end, his poorly thought out plans and his reprehensible actions is what caused his downfall, and I'm surprised that his own people didn't rebel and shoot him dead sooner.

  • WOW! so true
