Maybe it's phrased bad, but it isn't necessarily dumb
Carlos isn't asking what bit Pete, he's asking what happened to them, and what led to Pete getting bit (Were they ambushed? Is Nick okay? Is Pete still alive? etc)

No the stupidest part was Carlos asking about Pete but not about the rest of the group. Also that they left the door open, which could have caused some real problems....
Carlos is such a genius. He asks the best questions.

Seriously though, Carlos's character was proof that the writers had no Idea what they were doing for the season as a whole.
