Is Beyond Two Souls any good? (no spoilers please)

So the game has just come out for PS4, I never played it last-gen (I had a Xbox360), and I was wondering if I should pick it up now (for $30) or wait for a sale. The game gets a lot of mixed reviews, but from what I've seen the complaints are mostly just the same "Waaaah! it's not a game, stop calling it a game waaaaaaah!" that the Telltale games also gets. So I figured there would be a decent chance of fanbase overlap and that this was the place to ask. Thoughts?

It's alright. It's a high production AAA Interactive Movie with a neat idea, but sacrifices writing for acting. I liked it even if it was not nearly as good as Heavy Rain. Hey, it's still better than the mess that was Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy.

One more con is there is literally no point in passing the QTE's as the main character is invincible and can't die.

For 30 bucks you could do worse, plus the PS4 release comes with the story in chronological order, so you won't have to deal with playing the game in scattered memories like the original release.

  • I never played it, but I've watched full playthroughs and in my opinion the game seems pretty awesome. Not as good as Heavy Rain, but still pretty good.

  • No.

    Watch it on youtube.

Meh. It wasn't amazing and it could have been better. Having played and liked their other games I was disappointed in a sense however I still enjoyed it for what it was. I'd suggest Heavy Rain or Indigo Prophecy if you have a working PS2 or PS3.

  • The "story" is very...incohesive. It's more or less just random events from the life of girl with superpowers stitched together with no real overarching plot. The scenarios themselves can be hit-or-miss. Some are impactful and well thought-out; others seem really out of place and pointless. If you're going to pick it up, I suggest waiting for a sale.

  • It's like a failed Pulp Fiction. It's worth watching on YouTube if you have free time, but I wouldn't spend money on it. It was an interesting concept poorly made. The only saving grace was Ellen Page's fantastic acting.

  • Sadly I don't have either. I was on Xbox last-gen.

  • Ellen Page is one of the main reasons I want the game. She was so great in Hard Candy and Super(two of my favourite movies)

  • Based off the comments so far, I'm probably going to wait for a sale. I reckon it will probably get one within the next few months (hopefully during Christmas, but I kind of doubt it).

I thank all of you for giving your opinions. :)

  • I thought it was really bad personally, it basically just a movie, non of your choices really do anything bar the final ending one.

  • Heavy Rain was better IMO.

  • Definitely going to pick up HR when it comes out :)

    Heavy Rain was better IMO.

  • The jarring thing about it is the story jumps around instead of telling scenes in the correct order, which would've befitted the game a lot better if it had. You don't even have the option to replay the levels in the correct order after completing the game. I tried to do this but after finishing each mode, it would try to load a different point in the timeline. Eventually I gave up on my second playthrough

And I'm going to be frank, apart from the homeless group Jodie hangs out with [as seen in a preview before the game's release] I didn't give a shit about anybody else in Beyond Two Souls. The developers seemed more interested on how Jodie looked and all her many MANY outfits, rather than creating a relatable character. Most times the plot felt superficial, as if they were trying to show all these sad scenes and tragedies, yet most the times there's something missing in those moments that failed to trigger an emotional response out of me. All the dramatic events they set up, I didn't care much about. The only times in the plot I found interesting were as I said, the time spent with the homeless group, and the segment where Jodie's a teenager. I would've gladly been more interested in a Chronicle type story with Jodie, than the mish mash of events the developers strung up Instead. Heck, that whole homeless segment could've been the game, just that with Jodie and that group. The plot became more confusing than it had to be.

The gameplay segments are fine and inventive, despite the fact you can't really die but it was still fun taking part, but can I recommend this game? No, I really can't. If you're curious enough to check it out, I'd suggest watching a playthrough first.

  • Wait, they literally had to change the story's order? Jesus people must've really hated it. :/

  • Be sure to do so. There are slow segments, but it's a neo point and click game so that's expected.

  • Its just an extra option that's there for people, but I do know a few people who hated how the game was scattered into memories. I didn't mind it too much.

  • Oh. Yea I understand that because there are segments where Ellen Page is like homeless or some shit and then it cuts to her being in a bar fight with dudes who try to nasty shit to her. I just kept thinking, "what is all this?"

  • i did like the game but heavy rain was much better imo better controls characters could actually die and the story was believable

  • To be fair Beyond Two Souls wasn't even trying to go for believable.

  • I loved the game, Ellen was fantastic and I loved the concept of Aidan. I'd recommend waiting for heavy rain release I heard they are selling both games together in a bundle at that release. You will enjoy them :)

  • I didn't enjoy it as much as Heavy Rain and Until Dawn. I just didn't like the story. But it is a good game, actually. Good graphics, good gameplay etc. Ellen Page did a good voice acting, her character reminded me of Ellie a lot, that's because Ellie resembles Ellen Page when she (Ellen) was, I dunno, young. Hope Heavy Rain gets to ps4 too. I mean why not? It's just awesome

They're actually adding that feature to the PS4 port.

In other news, Heavy Rain is coming to PS4 at an estimated February 2015.

  • People either love it or hate it. Personally, I liked parts of it and despised other parts of it. So, it was kind of a mixed bag for me.

  • If you played heavy rain you may be very disappointed. Choices you make don't have as much impact in the story as heavy rain did. But if you can get it really cheap go ahead

  • I'd also recommend just watching it. Actually, I'd recommend just watching all of David Cage's games, including Heavy Rain. That game was chock full of David Cage's usual shitty writing, ideas, and execution too. It just wasn't as bottom-of-the-really-nice-looking-barrel horrible as BTS, or just bad in every way like IP. At the very least, I can give Heavy Rain credit for being more consistent than the other two shit-shows, probably because David Cage didn't cram in a whole bunch of cliches that don't fit, and instead crammed in a bunch of cliches that at least somewhat fit. In other words, Ethan doesn't suddenly get attacked by magic bugs from some magic cult or some shit, complete with quick time events.

Sure, if I absolutely had to recommend one to play, I'd also choose Heavy Rain. But I'd do so while making it clear not to expect brilliance. The relationship between David Cage and brilliance can best be visually summed up by two parallel lines. So close, but never connecting.

AND if you buy Beyond Two Souls before February 29th then you can get Heavy Rain at a discounted price! (Or at least in the UK, not sure about anywhere else)

GOD! I sound like a freakin' PlayStation ad.

  • Oh yeah, I heard about that. I'll probable wait for the bundle to just go on sale, and pick them up at once. Thanks though.

Ps. I often sound like an ad myself. Whenever there's a sale on PSN I always inform my friends. Haha.
