who do you prefer? Duncan or Royland?
I prefer Royland. The time of Negotiation is over.. Duncan is really wise, And I would have took him as Sentinel, when there wouldn't be a war going.
Like Malcolm told Ethan: Royland is smart when it goes over to Military technics and strategies.

I chose Royland and it was one of those rare choices where I felt most sure with. Malcom's reasonings played a role, but it was also because that I find his blunt and headstrong personality trustworthy.
And I honestly felt that Royland suits the role as Sentinel the best.
This is a side-note, but I find Sentinel Royland has better and empathic lines than Duncan who is suppose to be wise and kind.
I replayed episode 1 some minutes ago, And I thought exactly the same
I prefer Duncan. I just didn't like how Royland was so violent. I just found Duncan to be more level headed and I believe at the time I needed that. I was upset when he died but I'm glad my Asher is with Royland at the end, that was a point in time I need Royland over Duncan.
So I will always be team Duncan but I'm fine with Royland having my back at the end of it all.
cool choice
I'm team Royland but I do love Duncan, he's a great character.
I liked Royland until he was the traitor, but I didnt kill him and that got Duncan killed, so now Ill probably go back and kill Royland so I can have my man Duncan Doughnuts again.
I chose Duncan but I liked Royland a lot. it's really upseting that he had to be my traitor and that they can't both be alive x.x I'm with traitor Royland in the end (if the codex is accurate) and it seems fitting.
In case you should know if you pick Royland as Sentinel Duncan becomes traitor. So that way you don't have to kill Duncan and Royland will die in battle.
I agree. The codex seems fitting with Rodrik alive and traitor Royland alive.
I feel like my avatar may slightly be giving it away :P
But yeah, I love Royland. Honest, passionate, tough and up-front, he really fit best into the role of Sentinel I think. I also just love the chemistry and look of him and Rodrik together. Even though I like Duncan too and think he's a great character.
Also, Brian George is one of the best voice actor's in the game IMO, and that helps as well.
Royland
Duncan all the way. Still don't understand how people think choosing Royland as sentinel is a smart move.
Duncan, he seems more loyal. I don't understand why chossing Royland as sentinel is better, he is so creepy. Duncan being traitor makes no sense. Who would work with someone who killed their niece and brother?
Royland. I just LOVE having a badass Sentinel at my side who says I can trust him no matter what. And he has better lines than Duncan. And it just makes more sense, depending on what kind of choices you make as Rodrik. I was debating on killing Duncan to save Royland, but then I thought to myself, "wouldn't Royland wanna go out like that?". So I chose not to go back. And I'm with Duncan in the end and I'm happy with that choice. I hope he redeems himself to Asher and Talia.
Yeah I know, but I wouldn't want to replay the whole game, also in the end I think Duncan did make the better Sentinel.
I understanding your reasons and if you prefer it that way, sure. But I think personally I would feel extremely uncomfortable having Traitor Duncan by my side in the next Season. No matter how much he tries to redeem himself and work to earn the Lord's trust, that doesn't change the fact that he did betray the House, indirectly responsible for Rodrik's or Asher's death and freeing Gryff which allowed the Whitehills to besiege Ironrath without anything holding them back.
Once a trust is broken, it isn't really that easy to trust the traitor again when you keep suspecting he will betray you again.
Yeah, I am still mad at him, but...my Gared in my game is marching south back to Ironrath. Don't you think he's gonna, like, hate Rodrik forever for killing his uncle?
It is hard to know how Gared will react. But even if Gared hates Rodrik for his action, that still doesn't change the fact that Duncan was a traitor and by doing so he indirectly betrayed Gared and spatting on his efforts and sacrifice to help them.
How the hell is Royland creepy?
Another reason is because I just think it's, you know, in-character to spare the traitor to save Asher. And he had his reasons for treason, so I don't blame him. Other than that, I got nothing.
Here's what I think you should do:
Or we could always choose Duncan as Sentinel, kill traitor Royland, keep Rodrik alive and have Gared march back. ^^
Yeah! How is Royland creepy? If you think it's because he said he'd never go against your will or he does everything he can to help the Forresters, it's called being loyal, not being creepy.
Erm, did you play the first episode? Duncan couldn't have cared less when he heard of his brother and niece's murder. All he was interested in was placating House Bolton and Whitehill. As always. Hence, again, why he makes the perfect traitor.
good point, though
Ser royland of course!
Still, no.
Look at his face. That's the face of a violent man. And his voice, man.
If you say so. To me there's not a single creepy thing about him.
You seriously hate him because of his face and his actually caring for the Forresters?!
I don't hate him. I picked Duncan because he seemed more trusting and caring. Believe me, I wish the traitor situation was different.
Royland, obviously; I've been advocating for the guy on the forums here ever since day one.
This doesn't mean I think any lesser of Duncan, he's a good choice for Sentinel, and no doubt a good man at heart even as he makes mistakes ( He was my traitor ); however, Royland has always been straight up honest with the player. Yeah, he's brutal, blunt, and tends to let his anger get the best of him which causes him to always seem so violent all the time. He doesn't exactly have a filter either on his mouth, so he'll say some pretty derogatory shit towards you, even though, he doesn't mean to be as offensive as he sounds. He's just a born warrior and he's always been. With the way the game goes, regardless of your choices, I always think it's best to have the man who'll stick up for you, fight for you, and be truly honest to you — as mentioned, he doesn't have a filter between his brain and his mouth.
I think what subconsciously sealed my deal with Royland to always be my chosen man was in Episode One itself; Duncan goes behind Ethan's back, even though he was lord, to send Gared away without getting Ethan's input, he decided himself, showing a clear lack of respect in my opinion as they still had plenty of time before Ludd or Ramsay would have ever shown up. No, no, but what drew me to Royland, was how in Episode One, instead of doling out the Punishment he saw fit on Erik, he took him straight to Ethan for Judgement, and this was right after Ortengryn and Ethan had finished talking about choosing the role of Sentinel... Royland was the first man we saw and he was toting a thief in hand.
Plus, I feel Duncan was a better Sentinel for Episode One, as there wasn't the looming threat of death hanging over us; so, if we had been able to chose again as Rodrik, I would have been fine with having Duncan as Sentinel with Ethan before choosing Royland as Rodrik as we moved into the active threat of war. Besides that, Duncan was already Castellan, why he needed to be Sentinel is beyond me, since being Castellan is a powerful position already.
I think what people don't realize when they play Telltale's Games, is that they use one specific trope throughout most of their games... That's the Red Oni, Blue Oni trope. Basically, it is about two individuals ( or occasionally, factions or civilizations ) that are significantly linked together somehow ( such as through a rivalry, friendship, being siblings, co-workers, competitors, etc. ) that have differing personalities and, with it, often different approaches to the world in general, especially whatever they might be competing for or over. This, of course, gives them something to butt heads about, since their manner of acting may rub each other the wrong way and each is sure that their way of doing things is right. Hence why with Duncan you'll strive for peace but still get kicked around and walked all over by being a pacifist. While with Royland, you'll at least resist, standing tall against oppression, and yes, get into plenty of fights along the way — which is why the argue in Episode two over how each of them chose to resist the Whitehill Garrison. Same goes in TWDG with Lee deciding whether to side with Lily or Kenny and in TWDG:S2 with Clementine having to choose between Kenny and Jane. Two very different extremes every time that can cause conflict along the way.
Well, the way you said him being creepy, it kinda sounds like you DO.
Before Episode 5, I would have chosen Royland.
After Episode 5, and learning of how both Royland and Duncan are both capable of betraying the House they're sworn to serve, unless they are granted the title Sentinel beforehand, I choose neither.
Both people are not to be trusted.
If I was creepy like him, then why did I choose Duncan?
I like both Duncan and Royland for different reasons, but since I had to choose one, I chose Duncan. If I actually thought the Forresters had a snowball's chance in Erros of fighting and winning against the Whitehills and their backers, the Boltons, I'd have gone with Royland. But the main problem was Royland let his pride get in the way. Someone like that has no business being the Sentinel outside of wartime and like it or not, the Forresters lost that war before it even began. In that situation, brains trumps brawn every time in my book. Having played the game to the finish now, I kind of wish I had made Royland my Sentinel for the first playthrough just so I could have seen what it would have been like. Because knowing what I know now, that in the end it's hopeless to take Royland's combative stance, I just can't justify ever choosing him as my Sentinel in future playings.
And just for the record, I thought the Maester was the traitor. I know, obvious choice, but the other two grew up with in Ironrath. Guess I put too much stock in loyalty. Made that mistake a lot.
I thought the Mother was, to protect Ryon
I had the same thought, but I didn't believe she'd sacrifice the family just for one son.
I wasn't talking about YOU being creepy. I was talking you thinking Royland is creepy.
I like both, but when it came to important decision making I sided with Duncan mostly
