How the hell can this character be a walker?

enter image description here

Simple question here but seriously, how can Randall become a walker? If we decide to kill him Michonne hit him so hard his skull breaks and his brain is seriously damaged. Knowing we have to destroy the brain to prevent reanimation, which she pretty much did, how can he still become a walker?

Comments

  • Apparently it wasn't enough. Also the plot couldn't have progressed if he didn't reanimate since telltale would have to make choices actually matter.

  • Like CrazedRabbit said, it wasn't enough.

  • He had a closed head injury, basically he received a hard blow to the head from michonne hitting him with the object, but the object did not break the skull.

Remember how in Season 1 and 2, Clem and Lee always had to hit zombies multiple times in the head with blunt objects to finally kill them? Like with the babysitter or the shed walker? Yeah, just because a blow to the head would kill a person doesn't mean it would be enough to kill a walker, they're resilient.

The blow was hard enough to break his skull and kill him, but didn't do enough damage to the brain to stop him from turning. That's also why the walker version of Randall is slower, weaker, and dumber than most walkers are, because like I said, the blow still did damage to the brain (and blinded him in one eye), just not enough to stop the reanimation process.

    For a frame of reference:

    • The babysitter in the very first episode of the game has Lee striking her with a hammer multiple times. It takes a few blows to kill her, but she gets noticeably weaker with each hit.

    • When you're escaping Crawford, there's that fat zombie on the stairs that Lee sinks the hatchet into, which doesn't manage to kill it.

    • In All That Remains, there's that one walker tied to a tree. Clementine smacks it in the head repeatedly with a branch. The first two blows don't kill it, but they do make it slow down and become weaker.

    • When you're slicing up walker Nick, you practically slice his brain open with one of the hits, which again doesn't kill him, but makes him significantly weaker.

    • The walker in Michonne that you burn in the fire survives, but can barely even move/crawl afterwards.

    • There's a walker in the first episode of Michonne (the one that attacks you underwater). You stab the machete through its head, but it still didn't do enough damage to kill it.

They could have made it work with Randall being dead, they just chose not to (sadly). They could have just had everyone try to stall Norma and be like "Sorry, he had to use the shitter, he'll be out in a minute"

Or they could have had Michonne be flat-out ruthless and toss his limp body out the door like "Here he is!"

Apparently it wasn't enough. Also the plot couldn't have progressed if he didn't reanimate since telltale would have to make choices actually matter.

  • I've always seen it as this:

As long as the stem of the brain, or the limited part of the brain taken over by the infection that allows it to control motor functions, is intact, then major portions of the brain not necessary for the infection can be damaged without killing it completely.

Since many blows in these games are delivered to the front and top of the head, I would imagine it would not directly damage the stem part of the brain and it may take longer to put it down, which is why this sort of injury killed Randall but allowed him to reanimate.

Oh well, he basically turns at the very beginning of the episode, so it's not like a super major spoiler

    A super major spoiler would be ████████ ████ ██████ ████ ██████ ███ and ██████ █████ ██ ██ ████████.

    It's just a standard ASCII character/code

Hold the Alt key, and enter 219 on the numpad.

Alternatively, just copy+paste the symbol of your choosing off a site that lists different ASCII characters, like this one

  • That was my initial question too, but apparently the blow wasn't strong enough to destroy his brain.

  • Traditionaly with zombies you "remove the head or destroy the brain" its more about severing the brain stem sometimes you see people using a screwdriver at the base of the skull at the back of the neck, you want to completly stop the brain from communicating with the spine.

People can live with extensive brain damage and even large amounts removed.

my guess is he died of bloodloss or shock and is now a lobo zombie.

    lobo zombie

Heh, that's actually a pretty good way to describe walker Randall.

Anyways, I think it's pretty obvious that he isn't exactly... up to par with other zombies. He isn't as aggressive, he's relatively slower, and he isn't as responsive to the stuff around him. The blow to the head might not have been enough to fully kill him, but it was definitely enough to fuck him up.

  • It made sense to me, we just didn't hit him enough times lol

  • I like zombie Randall more than live Randall. I found it funny how they could walk him along and he wouldn't do anything aggressive, just a harmless little guy. I liked him! I wanted to keep him around as a pet or something because i actually found him cute. Is that crazy?

You know, despite an earlier post I made in this thread, I've actually decided that I liked zombie Randall, too. In fact, I prefer that they decided to make him a zombie rather than fully killing him.

The best scene is if you let Pete go in episode 2, and handed Randall over to Norma

Zombie Randall gets confused and starts walking in circles, then he starts going back towards Michonne, then Norma calls out to him and he starts going towards her instead. It's actually pretty funny.

  • I saw that too, I thought it was funny as well XD zombie Randall was the best decision they made. I'm kinda sad they killed him and couldn't just let him wander off, turned out much nicer as a zombie than a human being honestly lol.

  • It was pretty stupid because he literally had a hole in his head, it could have simply been fixed for story purposes if he just didnt have a hole in his head.

  • @Lilacsbloom, there's another pretty funny scene with walker Randall, though it kind of ruins the mood, which makes it even funnier. If you play the gramophone and Randall is a walker, he will hear it from the garage and start moving his head along with the rhythm. That killed me.

  • You gotta destroy the brain. It just cracked his skull. I saw zero brain bleeding when I killed him. So, it makes sense to me.

  • Yeah, but in reality, if you hit someone that hard with a wrench that you can see the hole in the head, you cant tell me the brain was not damaged.

  • Not crazy at all IMO :) i also was more fond of walker Randall than regular Randall.

I found him to be too similar to Carver actually, and i liked Carver for what he was. Randall just seemed to be a more unhinged version of what Carver was, just with Norma there to mitigate his effect on the Monroe group somewhat.
