How was Larry racist?
Before I begin, I'm going to say that this isn't about me condoning, justifying, or excusing racism. Please don't get that confused. It's about how nothing racist is even remotely said nor implied by Larry, but it's still believed by some that he is because of Lee's dialogue in S1 E2.
Sorry to bring up something quite old, but I felt like I needed to bring this up.
So, I saw this image floating around:
And it just boggled me that someone could be so unwilling to explanation?? In Season 1 Episode 2, when Lee is questioned about why Larry hates Lee the most out of everyone, Lee has the option to say "He's just a racist asshole."
And because of this, I've seen a lot of people actually believe that Larry is???
You'd think that if Larry disliked Lee because he was black, that he wouldn't make the threat against Lee to "watch his ass" if something happened to Clementine (and Lilly, but that's besides the point) considering she's black herself.
Throughout the entire time Larry was alive, he never said any racist slurs and it surely wasn't implied at all. The entire reason why Larry disliked Lee was because he knew of Lee's past as a convicted murderer. Surely you wouldn't want (who you think is) a murderer anywhere near you or your family, which is why you'd put up a tough front and make it known that you won't put up with any of it. Which is why Larry threatens to tell the group that Lee was a convicted murderer before the outbreak.
I'd like to hear what your thoughts are about it and if you disagree. I'd appreciate that we're all civil and open-minded about it, also.

I agree. To be bluntly honest, I believe that that was Lee—and the player—unfairly using the race card to condone Larry for being an asshole to Lee. Both of them know that it was because he knew about Lee's prison sentence, but why not gloss over that so that we can hate Larry even more? I hate it when people attribute an issue like this to a different one, like racism, or homophobia.
I agree, I don't see Larry as racist. Just because the one person he disliked happens to be black doesn't make them a racist.
Another interest point, it does say a lot about Lee as a character if he chooses to try and make a person out to be racist to cover up his criminal background.
Nah not racist. Homophobic tho.
I can't remember if he is or not, could you give me some examples?
Especially since it makes some people dismiss actual racist situations by saying "you're just using the race card," despite them being actually racist.
I think it's the 'you and what homo parade' line he gives to Kenny and Lee from Episode 1.
ah, that's right.
Good point I don't recall Larry's comments or anything he said to be racist. I think he just knew about Lee's past and was being overprotective of Lily though he was being a real jackass about it.
Nah there really isn't anything other than that one dialogue option that paints Larry as a racist. I think the option is only there for the player to give a believable reason on the spot to explain the obvious rift between the two dudes without giving away the real reason.
If he is, why the hell would he be in Georgia
I agree, I don't remember larry being racist, but i do remember him a complete D-bag though
I agree. When I heard him say that I was confused. Don't get me wrong Larry was an asshole but he never said anything racist.
Because being a dick to a black person is racist, even if it has nothing to do with there skin color.
I think I saw someone on YouTube make the case that he is based on calling Lee "boy" ("Get your head out of your ass, boy!" when confronted about Duck) which can be considered a slur against dark-skinned men, although since he can call Doug "doughboy," I'm not quite sure if that theory holds water and he's just a condescending jerk a lot.
Considering his age that kinda works. The "boy" thing is Civil Rights era racism.
He does seem the type, but there is no real clear cut evidence. As for his behaviour, it was more than him just putting up a front and disliking Lee. Once he tried to kill Lee back at the chemist, I knew this guy would have to go. I had a feeling that the game would present some sort of opportunity to get rid of him and I was happy to take it.
He wasn't. He had every right not to trust Lee given his history. I doubt race had anything to do with it.
I never thought of it that way. Nice thought.
Of course it didn't.
No he's an asshole but he's not racist. I only called him racist in order to pussyfoot around Lee's past. Larry genuinely seemed wounded by it when it was brought up later on.
pussyfoot omfg
He wasn't necessarily racist. He was just an asshole to Lee because he wasn't fond of the fact that Lee Everett was a murderer.
But I also think that after three months of surviving together, Larry could have cooled his jets a bit, as being a murderer can prove useful in the apocalypse. The man just took it too far too often...
About time someone pointed this out. I want Lee to call Larry an asshole but a racist asshole? sigh
