Kirkman Season 6 Finale 'Apology' Letter (154 letter hacks)
Firstly I found that this is in Issue 154 letter hacks so if you're gunna talk about 154 I HAVE NOT READ YET! So use spoilers for 154
Herewith is the letter Kirkman wrote...
"Okay, the season 6 finale has certainly caused a fervor online. EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT. Some people love it. Some people are indifferent. Some people HATE it. We weren't trying to game the audience, we weren't trying to FORCE you to come back for season 7.... we hope you were always pllaning on doing that and still plan on doing that.
We did want you talk. And talk you are.
The speculation, the frustration, the possibilities, the theories... honestly, in my mind... that stuff is FUN. I honestly feel like that's something fun for the fans to do during the break. Was it Spencer? Could it have been Morgan? What about Carol? Did Negan kill Jesus?! (Note, none of them were there... I'm not giving ANYTHING away.) I know people are angry over this, but that wasn't our intent. The idea was that after 6 seasons of the show, we wanted to stay on your mind and give you something to talk about.
And think of it this way... a character you love and are going to miss is DEAD, and we gave you a few extra months to hope, to not grieve. Is there uncertainty? Yes. But that was kind of the idea.
But seriously. Everyone on TWD team wanted to do something cool. We wanted to do something different and we did it to change things up, get people excited and keep this show on your mind.
For some of you, that effort backfired and you're angry. And for that I'm sorry. The only thing I can PROMISE you is that the season 7 premiere is going to be awesome. And when viewed as a two-part episode (the same way EVERY SEASON of Star Trek: The Next Generation ended with the first half of a two-part episode that was a cliffhanger...), it's going to be a pretty awesome ride. And every minute of the season 6 finale was important and was setting something up that you probably won't see coming.
It's a cool episode... and remember... there's a LOT more for Negan to do. Be afraid... be very afraid. And excited!" ----- Kirkman 4th May

This is kind of ridiculous. They're making it sound like theyre the first people in history to come up with using a cliffhanger.
Also they 'wanted' the fanbase to be angry? That's just stupid.
They never said that, they just wanted to do something different that they thought was cool so that single scene stayed in peoples' minds for a long time and although I know allot of people disliked it, me understanding both sides, you can't really argue that it wasn't effective in creating theories and discussions that are still going on as of now.
I thought this was pretty obvious, why they used a cliffhanger I mean?
I personally liked it, not everyone is always going to feel the same of course but for me, after seeing characters die on screen or in the background, I don't think it would've had as big of an effect on me had they not done something different but this is just me. I don't recall ever seeing a death from a first person point of view, at least not in a TV Show or Movie
Ah right I actually misread it.
It was effective at producing theories - but if they wanted to do that they should have done it with a less iconic moment.
Once I saw Carol reverting back to her season one self, I stopped watching; thanks a lot Morgan. I didn't make it to the finale. The show is slowly coming apart IMO.
Oh F off Kirkman. You ruined Carol and screwed up the the biggest moment from the comics and messed up the finale
I think Carol is just struggling with the amount of lives she's taken, taking lives takes a toll on people, season 1 Carol was scared of everything couldn't kill walkers etc. In season 6 she's still killing walkers with ease and not scared most things such as taking lives or people even. I'm guessing the crying is knowing what's she's gunna do to people if they threaten her. Doesn't wanna kill but does if her or friends lives depended on it.
I don't think a person can go back to how they were at the start of the show any of them
Slowly lol. It has been apart since season 1. The only reason I still watch is because every now and then the pull out an epic episode to show they have potential. They always pull me back in with an epic finale, but not this time. This show would be so much better if it was on hbo. AMC holds it back.
And my view of the letter is that no amount of excuses will change my view of the finale. They took all the suspense out for the episode and the 7 premiere. I throughly enjoyed the season though. Mid season premiere was one of my favourite episodes of late
I'm not sure. I always got the impression that AMC is holding back the show and not putting enough money into it, but I think it is Kirkman who does all these crappy remixes.
Walking dead needs to take game of thrones example on how to do a cliffhanger right
All it did to me was make me almost completely lose interest in the TV series.
Nice job Kirkman and amc.
It's annoying how they still try to keep justifying the cliffhanger, every fan I know hates them for it.
Stop being pussies and kill major characters already!!!
As far as I'm concerned it's questionable writing. A few episodes back she was a killing machine, but only now she regrets it? She's reverting back to the timid old lady we saw in season one. The only difference is the reasons she's timid.
They start filming soon so one would imagine that leaks for the death will happen in about 1-2 months when people aren't spotted on set etc..
This could have been avoided if the had kill someone before the end.
Negan's presence is enough of a cliffhanger not knowing what'll happen next
I think a network always takes control of things from creators, if the creator says this the executives go "oh let's just change this for this"
AMC is definitely holding back with the profanity. Why couldn't Negan say FUCK (
To me it was atleast entertaining. It wasn't the best show on television but I was enjoying the characters. Then they started to kill the good ones off. I still don't understand why Shane and Andrea are dead, but maggie and Glenn are still alive. But besides that, Carol was the last straw for me.
Except actually it wouldn't: http://screencrush.com/the-walking-dead-hbo-nbc/
They ruined Andrea in the show, Andrea in the comic is one of my favourites but yeah I hated her on the show,
so I didn't care much for her but they could have kept her alive.
I thought the cliffhanger was really creative, but thats my stupid opinion.
you and your always stupid opinions!!!!!!
Sounds like he got a lot of angry tweets and had to say something out of pure frustration. Its not so much an apology as a "People, calm down!"
I dont know if that would have been effective. Not as many people would care. Angry is better than indifferent.
You mean having six of them in one episode? Lol
That is not season one Carol. That Carol wouldnt have hurt a fly. This is a new version based on her experiences so far. Also, "old lady"? You know she's only in her fourties, right?
You should watch the finale, you have missed a lot.
Yeah, lets kill em all!
Was season one Carol a timid mess? Yes. Is this Carol a timid mess, ever since Morgan screwed with her head basically? Yes. I see no difference. Also "Old lady" was a figure of speech, it wasn't meant to be taken literal. A few episodes back she turned out to be my favorite female character, but they ruined her. I will not watch that show anymore, I'm going to stick with Game of Thrones.
You can understand why Carol was the way she was in season 1 due to getting beat by her husband, obviously we can't understand how a zombie apocalypse would change someone but violence between partners is a very real thing. Wonder how long that was going on for before the outbreak
It wasn't an apology, he was just trying to justify what he did.
And also, he basically admitted it wasn't even a cliffhanger, it was an 'incomplete', half episode.
She's not timid, she's conflicted. There's a big difference. She doesnt hesitate to kill when she is forced into it, she just doesnt want to do it.
Im fine with that. I like the idea of being able to watch them back to back and continue the scene as a whole.
I'm liking your points, to add to the 'Timid' point.
Season 1, 2, 3 and 2 episodes of Season 4 for Carol to kill someone. Karen and David.
Season 6 episode 15 (1 episode before finale) Kills about 4 or 5 saviors. and like @KCohere says she doesn't hesitate if shes forced to but she doesn't want too.
For christs sake she's even killed a kid! That's gunna have an impact on you
Thought this thread would be about the letter not arguing about a character.
Even I got sucked into it, ugh ffs.
She isn't who she was in the JSS episode anymore, and that's all that matters. She's now a female version of Morgan, dull and boring. She was one of the characters holding up the show for me, but not anymore. Only Character worth watching now is Daryl, but they barely want to give him any screen time.
Yeah, and I like the idea of seing the whole scene as a whole in the first place, without having to wait 6+ mounths for it.
Obviously there wasnt time for that, not if you want to see the death and the aftermath.
Well, we disagree on a lot of things here, especially about Daryl being the only character worth watching.
I like all!
Mainly Carl most. Probs favouritism but since he's my fav comic character I think chandlers doing a great job.
Bah, Kirkman. You didn't leave it on a cliffhanger (The comic). Should've known better dude.
