Who can survive/die in Michonne episode 3?

I've played through episode 3 twice with opposite choices, I'm still left wondering who's determinant.

Norma and Randall I'm guessing always die

I know Sam dies if you stay with your kids

Berto died both times the only difference being that gabby or Jonas shoots him.

Gabby and Jonas depended on whether zac was alive or not.

I'm guessing Zac always gets shot by Norma?

Everyone else survived both of my playthroughs so I'm guessing they always live?

Oak can either live or die. If you go through with the trade or have Paige shoot Norma, he survives. If you ask Norma to hand him over, she'll just shoot and kill him.

Berto always dies, but the person that kills him changes (Jonas or Gabby)

Zachary always dies to Norma if he was saved.

Sam dies if you stay with your daughters.

Jonas and Gabby depend on the Zachary choice. After one of them kills Berto, Pete ends up killing them.

    Norma always dies.

Randall always dies, but the way he dies can slightly change. If you actually go through with the trade, Norma cuts him loose, but he immediately charges at you and attempts to kill you, which leads to you shooting him. If the trade fails, he'll headbutt Sam and try to make a run for it, and Sam shoots and kills him. If he's a walker and the trade failed, Sam shoots him. If he's a walker and the trade was successful, Norma shoots him.

  • I was actively trying to keep them alive in my canon playthrough and he died. Cool beans.

I saved Oak and Sam. I killed Randall in episode 2, and Sam shot her as a zombie, so she avenged her dad and brother. And I put Norma out of her misery. That was for Berto. And Zachary saved my life and died.

    R.I.P. Zachary and Berto :(

  • Guess I'm pretty good at trading dead people now then...

  • Saved Sam and Oak. I killed Randall in episode 2, Sam shot him as a walker, that's the revenge she deserved to have. Gabby killed Berto, Norma killed Zachary after saving my life and I let Norma get rotten by walkers..

Sam and Oak. And it's worth noting that Oak has 0 lines after being saved. Oh, and Sam has about 3.

Let's see... choices from past episodes.

    • Headbutting Randall, being honest to Norma, talk about your suicide attempt (?), etc. had no effect at all.
    • Keeping Pete added 3 lines.
    • Not killing Randall added a nice conversation with him but he still dies no matter what. (I've replayed with my 'Michone the saint' playthrough and he still hated me.) Norma gets pissed and wants to kill you no matter what (really frustrating).

It was mediocre in terms of choices mattering, I'd say a bit better than Amid the Ruins.

  • Jonas and Gabby depend on the Zachary choice.

Actually, I watched a playthrough in which Michonne told Norma to control her people after one of them shot Berto, so they didn't attempt to shoot Pete, and in return, they survived. Both of them ran into the house afterwards.

After one of them kills Berto, Pete ends up killing them.

I-I… what? I thought Paige shot them.

  • So what was Randal's plan of attacking after being cut loose with his broken fingers?

Also, is that the reason why the fight breaks out?

  • Yes it is. You can also not shoot him which results in Sam doing it instead. Norma still only comes after you because... Plot.

  • Oh, no, that didn't influence it. I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same sequence, the one in which Gabby or Jonas, and Pete, aim at each other, but the former ends up dead. I thought that was because Paige had covered Pete. I don't know, probably missed it.

  • Nah Pete shoots, pete and Gabby/jonas fire. You see the bullet miss pete and the it cuts to gabby/jonas with a hole in their head.

Paige can only get a clear shot when sam throws open the gate, and that only at norma.

I'll be honest first playthrough I thought it was paige as well

Randall charges directly at you, tackles you to the ground, and... attempts to choke you out with his mangled hands. Hey, gotta give him an A for effort, I guess.

Michonne manages to pick up her gun and shoots him through the head, Norma loses it, goes all Governor and tells her people to kill everyone.

Maybe it's frustrating (to you, at least), but it makes sense. I mean, her brother did just get killed right in front of her. It just pushed her over the edge. Sam wanted to kill Zachary after he shot Greg. Sam wanted to kill Randall after he killed her dad. Is Norma's case really all that different? The only difference is that unlike with Sam, Norma didn't have anyone there to try to talk her down or stop her, and she had her own group of people to command to attack as well.

  • What I mean is that even if it's Sam that kills Randall (the alive one) and you're as diplomatic as possible, Norma still chases you instead of Sam and tries to kill you for some reason.

I killed Randall so it made perfect sense that she wanted to kill me, but replaying and knowing that it had no weight at all was really disappointing.

Alright, I'll give you that. Although to be fair, Michonne's just laying there, out in the open, stunned by the gunshot. She's practically a sitting duck. So I guess Norma just decided to take what she could get?

  • I'd chalk it up to Telltale being lazy with story branching and didn't want to create scenes where Norma only goes after Sam if she is the one who kills Randal, instead of just going after you no matter what.

I know this is an older post, but this is actually a relatively rare bug that pops up in Telltale's games now and again. Sometimes, certain scenes that are meant to play... well, just don't play. It just skips to the next scene. That's what happened there. It just skipped over the scene of Gabby/Jonas shooting at you, and went to the part where everyone points guns at each other. Norma still says "I'll give you that one", and you can see the body of Jonas/Gabby on the ground.

Another good example of this is in Amid The Ruins: when you go into the tent, Kenny's supposed to deliver his "You know what it feels like to get beaten almost to death?" monologue. In some games though, it straight up omits the first part of his speech and just skips to him saying "It was like I was floating away"

There's a smaller example in TWAU finale, where during the fight with Mary, one of the scenes doesn't play correctly, and just skips. In particular, it's when Bigby hops up on some pipes trying to kill one of Mary's reflections. Sometimes the scene of him actually killing the reflection is skipped over, so it suddenly cuts to him attacking a completely different group of reflections.

Jonas and Gabby depend on the Zachary choice. Actually, I watched a playthrough in which Michonne told Norma to control her people a
