Jon Snow = Jon Targaryen?

So, after season 6 has gotten on it's way. I've been wondering, not having read the books, does Jon Snow have Targaryen blood? Is he really the son of Ned Starks sister? When she was captured by the Targaryens?

Did she get raped and had a kid? Is that why the red woman's bloodmagic made Jon come back to life?

Remember, i havent read the books. Am i on to something here?

  • It hasn't been confirmed yet but it's so commonly believed that most people accept it as truth.

Basically, Rheagar Targaryen was married to Elia Martell (Oberyn's sister) but at a tourney when asked to crown the most beautiful woman in attendance with flowers. He chose Lyanna Stark (Ned's sister) over his wife, indicating his early love with her.

The commonly told story from here on out is that Rheagar kidnapped Lyanna but most don't believe that to be true. Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon but it is possible she developed feelings for Rheagar and they ELOPED instead of it being a kidnapping. Also, Ned praises Rheagar after his death, as does Barristan Selmy. This would be odd for Ned if the man truly kidnapped and raped his sister.

They eloped to the Tower of Joy (subtle name, GRRM) where the theories really kick in. Most believe Lyanna became pregnant with Rheagar and was dying of childbirth when Ned found her. Ned was said to have found her in a 'pool of blood', something which could be caused by childbirth. This would explain SOOOOOOOOOOOO many things-

    1. Why the Kingsguard weren't with Rheagar. Ned is puzzled by this but Rheagar probably braced for the worst and, in case all went wrong, told them to protect the future of the Targaryen bloodline. It would also explain why they were willing to DIE to defend that Tower.

    2. Ned's honour. Supposedly Ned Stark was one of the most honourable men alive so having a bastard while still being married to Catelyn is very out-of-character for him.

    3. The promise. This is it. Ned says that Lyanna's last words were 'Promise me, Ned' and that promise caused him a lot of pain. The promise was probably to raise Jon Targaryen as his bastard, because if Robert knew of another Targaryen being alive as a possible threat to his claim on the throne, he would kill him instantly. Look at how he reacted to Daenerys and Viserys.

    4. Jon's appearance. Arya is said to look the spitting image of Lyanna when she was younger and Jon is said to resemble Arya the most out of all the Starks.

    5. 'The dragon has three heads'. The prophecy Daenerys is told of pretty much means every dragon needs a rider. Daenerys gets Drogon, that's obvious. Jon will probably get Rheagal, considering it's named after his father and either Tyrion/Bran/Meera/Euron/Jamie will get Viserion.

    6. Azor Ahai. If Jon is a Targaryen he fits the bill of Azor Ahai (The Prince that was Promised) to a tee as the person who will lead Westeros in fight against the Wight Walkers, a role Jon has already been established to take. Granted Daenerys and even bloody Jorah fit this bill too.

There are WAAAAAAAAAAY more reasons than this but this is all I can think of for now. There are numerous videos on YouTube that explain this if you want to check it out.

TL;DR- R + L = J means Rheagar plus Lyanna equals Jon. Lyanna was likely not raped and Melissandre's bloodmagic may have only worked because Jon is Azor Ahai.

  • I thought i was the first on this one, turns out after a bit of reasearch.. Im not, at all! heheh.

Thank you for giving so much detail :)

  • I will also add the reference of blue roses and the fact it was told that Lyanna said to Eddard "forgive me to love the blue roses" (or a stuff like that :P); it is a reference of the crown Rhaegar gave her, for blue were the roses of the crown she wore at the Tourney of Harrenhal.

The way you state it is kinda odd: GRRM stated you don't have to be a Targaryen to ride a dragon. So there's not any actual proof he will end up with a dragon, nor Rhaegal because he bears the name of his "father".

  • I really hate this R+L=J Theory for some reason, it never really stuck with me and especially how popular it is.

  • Probably because it's constantly talked about and is considered 100% factual even though it's yet to be confirmed
