Game of Thrones Season 6 episode 9 "The Battle of the Bastards" discussion

Discuss the episode as you wish. It should be a good one full of big character deaths. Tyrion better ride a dragon and Ramsay better die.

  • God damn it Rickon serpentine.

  • Laughed so hard when the epic music just stopped and the horses ran by Jon xD

  • Hooooooooly fuuuuuckk!!!!!! That was epic as hell man. Though I'm sure we'll get Littlefinger f**king things up.

  • That was amazing! Definitely the best episode of the season. And not just the battle, the pre-battle, after battle, and even Meereen were great. Jeez, this might be the first 10/10 for me since Hardhome. Have to rewatch, have to rewatch!!

Those hounds were cute as f**k ^_^. Theon should've been the one to kill Ramsay though.

Based on previews for next episode I suspect we get a red wedding part 2. But this time maybe the good guys win. I think Arya kills the Frey's and Jaime escapes just in time like the Blackfish. I also think the wall collapse next episode thanks to the white walkers and I think kings landing goes up in flames in the finale.

  • That was the single greatest hour of Game of Thrones history, 1000000/10

  • At least no more Ramsay in S2!!!!!

House Stark has avenged Ethan Forrester and Arthur Glenmore's death (in the game).

Dang, I wish Theon could have been there to see Ramsay die, but that works too. The Bolton family did so much to the Starks, the last being killing their little brother. Now to deal with the Freys!

Baelish took his sweet time but Im glad they made it. Of course he's going to exact his "price" for that help. I hope Sansa thought of that.

Also, I got a kick out of Dany and Yara smirking at each other. They have so much in common, except maybe Dany doesnt like girls...?

Poor Rickon. Unlike everyone else, I did care what happened to him.

I think we can safely say that episode was not a disappointment.

  • Too soon, maybe tomorrow

  • Well, Theon is not there so, it had to be him or Sansa, and Jon getting some of his own bloody revenge. Im sure Theon will rejoice when he hears.

  • The Starks probably don't even know who they are lol

Looks like afterall, Ramsey bleeds like any other man. I'm giving that dog the badge of Dog of the Year.

  • That was for Shaggydog, his furry cousin.

  • Finally the Boltons have fallen! The Starks have returned to their rightful place!

Great episode! I like that the battle captured the horrors of war. It ain't glorious or heroic. It is a terrifying and nightmarish experience.

Still sad for Rickon's and Wun Wun's death though. :(

  • According to the codex, Ned Stark was envious of House Forrester. And Jon knows that Gared is from House Forrester so I don't think that they are invisible to the Starks.

The Starks probably don't even know who they are lol

  • Knew the Knights of the Vale were gonna save the day but nonetheless I'm still very pleased with the episode. It gets so depressing and dull when all the bad guys win everything, great to see the good guys finally get one. Also that ending scene was amazingly satisfying.

  • I'm glad to see someone else is not "I don't care about Rickon". I felt bad for Wun Wun. Was he the last giant left? I guess even he could take too many arrows.

Unless there are still a few hidden survivors beyond the Wall.

  • And for some reason, I find Smalljon Umber far more threatening than Ramsay. He made a badass speech. He reminded me a bit of Harys from the game with his huge sword. I wished that he and Jon have a one-on-one duel. But his fight with Tormund is satisfying enough.

  • For some reason I thought the dragons' wings would atrophy being held in that dungeon for so long. Overall pretty good episode, though I kinda hoped they'd have held Ramsey's death until the finale.

  • Can I ask why? It seems theyre going to be focusing on Kings landing next episode and winding down the Winterfell part.

Ding, dong, the bitch is dead! The hounds ripped his face off his fuckin' head!

Just had to sing that, and mourn the loss of my homies Rickon and Wun Wun. Rest in peace while Ramsey rots in pieces. Spectacular episode. I'm giddy.

That episode was fucking amazing! The Boltons are gone, and the Starks have reclaimed their rightful place in the north! Now it is time to take revenge on the Freys!

There are no words to express how satisfied I was seeing Ramsay getting beaten nearly to death, and then fed to his hounds!

Tormund killing Smalljon Umber was another highlight of the episode. The traitor had it coming

  • Oh yeah, I was worried for Tormund's safety. But I am very happy that he survived and killed Smalljon.

I was extremely satisfied seeing Tormund killing that asshole

  • Let us remember the unsung heroes. The warriors of House Mormont, Hornwood and Mazin. They stayed loyal and many gave their lives to restore the Starks to power. I hope the survivors gets rewarded for their loyalties.

  • You and me both. I was almost positive that Tormund wasn't going to survive

Oh yeah, I was worried for Tormund's safety. But I am very happy that he survived and killed Smalljon.

  • It's the moment I've been waiting for, Mereen was finally fantastic. The three dragons reunited. The execution of the masters. Dealings with the Greyjoys. It was wonderful.

The battle of the bastards didn't disappoint, even if it was predictable. Not saying that was a bad thing at all. Rickon's sacrifice was the one needed to light the fire back inside of Jon. However, I am still utterly disappointed in Sansa. If she'd mentioned anything.. anything at all to Jon, they might've stalled the battle until the Vale troops could arrive to begin with. It was kind of Jon to save Ramsey's death for her.

Definitely the best episode of this season so far.

  • RIP Wun Wun... his sacrifice is that enabled the Starks to defeat the Boltons and reclaim Winterfell...

RIP Rickon... you were utterly useless to the story other than simply existing....

RIPieces Ramsay "The Pansey" Bolton.. the badass evil warlord who eventually ran from every fight until he was cornered and beaten like a bitch.

All around great episode but im surprised that there weren't more major casualties on the good guys side.

  • I actually really enjoyed Dany's section this episode. I like her much better when she is actually doing something a ruling Queen should do, instead of walking through fire and making speeches. Even her slight hesitation looking back at Tyrion before grabbing Yara's hand is a nice touch - she's intimidating but she still understands when she needs guidance and different perspectives.

And even though Rickon had no lines and next to no screentime this season, his death really got to me. Kind of like my reaction to Ethan's death, I just hate it whenever Ramsay suddenly kills a scared child. Ramsay's end could not have been more perfect.

One of the best episodes this season. While it was predictable, it was still handled well.

    Things I loved:

    • The battle was filmed spectacularly. The action felt immensely chaotic and terrifying. Possibly the best so far (though it's tough to say without re-watching previous seasons).
    • The tactics used in the battle were fantastic (on Ramsey's part that is). Love seeing shield walls done right.
    • Ramsey had some great moments this episode, so (unlike Stannis) he didn't go out on a bad note. He played the game well. Rickon's death was excellent, as was Wun Wun's (though I am sad to see them go).

    Things I liked:

    • Tyrion giving good advice to miss murder-happy.
    • Yara and Theon's meeting with team dragon.
    • Wun Wun had some truly great scenes. Really felt that they wouldn't have made it without him.

    Things I disliked:

    • The LOTR-style, third army joins the fight right as the heroes are being overwhelmed cliche (wow, they showed up right when they were needed. What are the odds?)
    • Ramsey saying his dogs wouldn't eat him (I really think he's smarter than that. Maybe he was just trying to put up a front, but...).
    • Anyone who thought Ramsey had plot armour, needs to see how many arrows miraculously missed Jon in this episode. pretty ridiculous. I mean, I'm glad they missed, but it felt kind of dumb at times.
  • Only gripe for me is how the hell did that pile of bodies happen in that short of time and who piled them up so high like that? Lol did they just crawl up there and die.

  • To be fair, Ramsay ordered his archers to shoot his men as well and he did that many times. Also a pile quickly adds up because people fall over the corpses and they can't get up because they keep getting trampled upon. So I think it is not unreasonable that a pile of bodies will be created.

I just find it a bit weird that the pile of bodies becomes a corpse wall that allows the Bolton army to surround the Stark army. But I love that they added that. It really adds to the grittiness and massive lost of life in this battle.

Only gripe for me is how the hell did that pile of bodies happen in that short of time and who piled them up so high like that? Lol did they just crawl up there and die.

  • ok time to get my thoughts out of this episode...

Hardhome is still the best GoT episode ever and its battle (well massacre) was the best. but anyways this episode was 9/10.

    • that intro was sweet as hell, seeing how they attacked meeren was awesome. still kinda felt like if they could've shown more like unsullied preparing or something like seeing the chaos happening inside the city that would've iced it for me.
    • that dany tyrion interaction was neat because tyrion once again calms that targaryen crazy shit of her with the reminder of her crazy ass father, that wildfire mention basically confirms that cersei gonna burn shit down.
    • them dragons attacking those motherfuckers was the best, kinda blackwater-ish, the contrast of two different types of weapons of mass destruction was nice to see. im glad the killed those two bitches at the end, tha fucker from astapor got on my nerves since the moment i saw him back in season 3.
    • ok here is where i have my problems with the meeren story this week.

    • why the shit were those harpies killing those highborn folk outside of meeren like that?? like what? why wasnt it inside the city? like i said thats what i wanted to see. clearly it was only just the ships fucking shit up in the city, but why outside with the freaking gate close?? i get that we needed to see the dothrak show their strength ( their numbers) but it just felt like " ooh yeah here are these fuckers" also when did the ironborn arrived? after the fight right? well who cares they are back. other than that cool meeren stuff.

    • now to the real shit, the north. that shit was epic everything about it was cool as hell.
    • rickons death ehhh... i dont like it.. but ill probably talk/rant about that later.
    • damn was that battle brutal, i honestly didnt find myself cheering or being like "ohhh, ahhh SHIT!" like im usually are with GoT battles or many war films, this was more "goddamn, jesus... omg" type of reactions with a slight terrified face. i mean this was a Saving Private Ryan type of reaction got from this battle, holy shit. i mean this was very brutal from the beginning as jon just straight up murdered fools and those goddamn mountains of dead and near death bodies... like that shit was shrugs. i mean for a moment i was like " damn! them zombie will not even smell jon at all!" (dumb walking dead joke..) i mean he was bathe in blood. also how bad ass of a fighter is he?
    • Wun Wun you da real MVP. i still get sad :,c

ok my only problems with it is that when we see davos charges in we dont really see him kick ass that much... i mean we only saw him when the vale army showed up to save their asses. also i mean i dont want to shit on it as too predictable but maybe instead of the Vale being the ones that save them all why not show like a couple of the mardelyns and gloves joining up? i mean instead of ramsay just basically killing a lot of his men with arrows, why not show like jon's army getting fucked up then they get some assist from the glovers and the /mardelyns and then as the fights is even out the fucking vale just comes and shits on the treasonous whores and fucks them in the ass ( ehh, ehh? like them roose and bronn quote mash ups??... k im done .-.). idk i think that could've been a bit cooler to see than just the vale rescuing them. but damn it was it cool.also Ramsay just standing as jon approaches him.. i guess he thought he was good enough and fast enough to actually get jon?? idk maybe some more action ramsay! also kind wanted ramsay to go out more like the joker, just laughin at jon as he is getting hit. but i kinda get why.

but overall i loved it 9/10 cant wait for next week (nooooo...) and im gonna wrap it up a lil faster and earlier than i should've but i has to sleep/

  • About the Harpys slaughtering people outside. I guess those people were trying to flee the city, Meereen is under siege after all.

  • Best episode for now.

Also, the Forresters have been avenged, fucking Whitehills don't have the Boltons having their back anymore, Starks are back bitches.

Poor Rickon. Wasted like this... What was his purpose in the story? Being a little boy and then dying? Wow, so character, such development. I hope George Martin won't kill him in the books. I want Rickon to grow up into a badass and brutal northern king, pretty please?

Actually, his death means that Stark's male bloodline was eliminated. Bran is far away behind the Wall and I doubt that he's able to have kids. And Jon is a bastard.

Also, am I the only one who gets this feeling that Sansa is doing everything to take place as the Queen in the North? I think she might betray Jon in the future. Or maybe I'm just paranoid..

  • How had people ever got the impression Rickon would be important? Because he is Stark?

And I don't mean that you shouldn't care about him, but he never had a character arc so what the hell are people complaining about lack of development? Smh.
