Well when you buy a game (even on the release date) you're still buying it without any knowledge of what's in it. Assuming you didn't read spoilers.
I guess preorder is for people who KNOW they want the game ( like me ) who want it already available. So there's no wasting time on the actual release date.
Pre-order culture annoys me. Why would you pay for a game that isn't out yet? All you have to go on is a teaser and you're ready to fork ove… morer your cash? I wish pre-ordering never became a thing, what was wrong with buying games on launch? Devs get money without even releasing the damn game, makes zero sense.
There are spoiler free reviews out there, you can also ask for friends opinions on the game. Can't do that if you preorder. It gets even more scummy when preorder bonuses are introduced, locking out content that has already been developed to people who bought the game blindly without waiting for reviews? Not a healthy business practice. I'm semi okay as long as there are no bonuses attached to it.

I think the positive side to pre ordering upcoming games is at least you are one of the first to get it when it's released, so you don't have to wait as long. But yeah I do see a drawback, people want to see others play it first and do reviews before they themselves go out and buy it. You could end up buying the game and find out you don't even like it. But seeing the Teaser trailer for TWD Season 3 it looks promising as did Seasons 1 and 2. So I may end up pre ordering it.
