Choices Affect The Flashbacks

One idea that I think would be cool is to only have flashbacks throughout this season to showcase how our ending affected what choice we had in Season Three, but if Clementine affected what happened in those flashbacks.

For example, say Clementine is explaining to Javier what happened with Jane, Clementine notes how she lost Jane when she was attacked by zombies: "I was with another woman - Jane, she was helping me survive but then walkers got her."

Javier asks, "What happened?"

And then we get dialogue choices such as [I tried to stay and help], [I left], [I put her out of her misery], [...] (with silence having what actually happened dependent on what kind of Clementine you played throughout Season Two and sometimes what Clem experienced in Season One).

So say for example you picked [I left], Javier remembers that and later that episode you have a flashback showing exactly what happened with Jane, as Clementine and her are overwhelmed by walkers and like you said, Clementine leaves her behind.

In another game someone picking [I tried to stay and help] would have the same flashback, only this time we see Clementine actually shooting at the walkers before she is nearly bitten herself, with a walker scratching the back of her hat. She then wakes up, and the camera angle would reveal the back of Clementine's hat with a deep scratch mark just as a subtle detail (even if it wasn't there before).

And then maybe someone picking [...] would perhaps have the choice depend on how Clementine treated Jane in Amid The Ruins/No Going Back (so picking dialogue options where you blame Jane for Sarah's death, or remark that she shouldn't expect any thanks from you for saving their lives - "So, what? Do you want a cookie? Do you want a cookie for doing the right thing?" would lead to Clementine leaving her perhaps).

What do you guys think about this?

  • HarjKS, this is a good idea. I don't have anything to add to it, other than hopefully keep the thread at the top so that somebody from Telltale reads it and decides to implement it later on.

Maybe those who remain silent could have the scene where Jane is overpowered nonetheless, with a voice-over of Jane telling the story of how she had to leave her sister and that of the man who was stuck under a car and four people died saving him. Then, when she gets to the part when a walker rips the neck of an old lady, and she was watching the sky like a bird, Jane would be devoured in slow motion. Not that I despise Jane—I really like her, but her death is supposed to be gut-wrecking.

Let's keep this at the top!

  • I was -almost- thinking the same thing, the difference being that the flashback to S2 would be the first thing in the episode (or that if it happened later, the flashback would be to S1).

  • Really dont like this idea, flashbacks take out of the current events and are just distracting. Especially if they are constant throughout the whole season. Michonnes daughters were irritating enough

  • Fair enough, but there isn't really a reasonable way that the endings could really affect things, flashbacks have been a common theory for quite some time as to the nature of how the endings will effect the story.

  • Thank you so much, and yeah that kind of death with the silent option would be great, I just merely mean what Clementine does exactly if silent.

  • I like your idea, but if the whole season had only flashbacks then there's no sense in making this game... That would fit to a DLC or something, they probably explain what happened during this time skip only in Ep 1, at least I hope so.

  • How about we have no flashbacks at all?

  • I'm with you.

I think it's a clever idea and all, but I'd personally, prefer if Jane/Kenny's fates were shown in the game's present time, instead of heavily focusing on flashbacks to show the outcome of S2, which for me, can sometimes distract from the actual story anyway. It'd be much more interesting if Telltale decided to have the first episode be dedicated to whatever choice Clementine made at the last season, as while it'll take more effort on their part, it'll also be a refreshing change and make our choices have more an impact.

    EDIT: Fixed something.

  • I would prefer this over anything else.

  • Really liking this idea. Although, having something appear out of thin air is a little much. And I also think that the flashbacks(yes, I think there will be more than one. [Mike, Bonnie, and Arvo]) should be seperate from the (present) dialouge. I think S2 got it right, by having Clem/us have the flashback, pick dialouge choices within it, and then take whatever we got from that flashback. For my Clem, it was "Sometimes you have to hurt someone else to protect the people you care about." That put things into perspective for me. As I was trying to keep everyone(including Kenny) safe, and together. But that made me think, screw everyone else, what's best for Clementine? Of course I knew the answer. #NoMoreKidStuff

  • Of course I knew the answer.

I'm wondering what the answer was!

Clem lost her (best) friend in Luke(imo), got shot, robbed. Then wakes up(miraculously) to find 2 adults behaving like children. I(as the player) was super pissed, aggravated, and angry. So I basically took control of the group(in my mind). I knew what Jane was up to, when she said Clem has to trust her. I never once believed she killed, and, or, abandoned AJ. So I let her play, play out. Was trying to keep between them, so things didn't get out of hand. But once Kenny stabbed Jane and got the advantage, I couldn't just let him kill her. I knew Kenny was unsaveable(I tried to bring him back, after Sarita, believe me.), so I had no problem pulling the trigger, because I knew he couldn't, not, pull that trigger.(hoping that makes since)

  • Good one mate, but I'd prefer that instead of answering Javier we simply played through the flashback as he question us.

  • I really like that idea. As long as there's not too much of it, it will be interesting. Maybe once or twice of it but not reoccurring throughout because I feel like that will make players get distracted from what is actually happening.

  • Yeah that was my intention, at most I could see maybe four flashbacks throughout the entire season. I wouldn't want it to get too heavy-handed, with maybe two flashbacks in Episode One just to kind of provide some basic exposition as to what happened concerning the endings.
