    Sneak Peak for Issue 158

  • Oh my GOD! WHAT AN AMAZING ISSUE! I haven't been this excited since "All-Out War". I'm loving Negan more and more each issue. Can't wait for the next one!

    P.S: RIP Gabriel...

  • Fucking Gabriel, man! Damn!

That was really hard to read. He was really growing on me...R.I.P.

  • This is what I get for creating the goddamn thread! Spoilers delivered directly to my feed.

    Fucking hell.

  • So, just got finished reading the issue.

Poor Gabriel. That was a pretty godawful way to go, honestly. And the little time-lapse panel of the roamers eating him down to the bone? Kirkman and co really went to town on the guy.

I'm liking the 16-panel grid so far, allows them to fit quite a lot of stuff into an issue. Plus it makes the full page spreads all the more effective when they show up. I did notice a bit of a change in the quality of the art, but nothing too off-putting.

I have to say, the fact that anyone the Whisperers kill become part of their army makes them all the more threatening. For some reason, the thought didn't cross my mind, but it's devious as hell. You take down some guy's buddy, and watch as he freaks out when his friend gets back up and attacks him a few minutes later. The hesitation from seeing someone you recognize in the middle of the herd could be all the distraction a Whisperer needs to get up close enough to shove a knife in your back. There's some psychological warfare to their fighting style that I didn't consider until this issue.

And judging from the last page, looks like we're going to have a Negan and Beta showdown, which I bet will be pretty fun. I'd enjoy watching the two of them beat the shit out of each other.

And on a final note, I really hope Dwight doesn't die by the end of all this. I've really grown to like the guy, despite him making his debut by killing one of my favorite characters. I hope the Negan/Dwight dynamic is explored a bit more in the next few issues. Negan basically just saved his life, so there's some interesting stuff that could come of that. Maybe.

But I covered it up with a spoiler tag so that it would be hidden.

I'm sorry, Better...Didn't mean to spoil it for you. :(

No, please, it's not your fault!

I should've remembered to avoid logging in until I'd read the issue by myself. Or at least avoid checking my notifications.

  • To be honest I'd grown not to care really about Gabriel. He just hadn't really done anything important since he was introduced. And when I saw him die, I didn't know it was him. I thought they were just killing an extra to introduce the whisperers. I didn't figure out it was him until I read the letter hacks. So RIP Gabriel. I wish I cared about you.

  • I never really cared for Gabriel but I would really hate to be him right now.

Also is it just me or was Negan especially funny in this issue?

  • I am still absorbing that Gabriel, who debuted around a hundred issues ago, just had his foot shot, was gutted, and also devoured to the bones, all while hanging upside down. It is insane to think that he was central to the plot at some point and now he's dead. It shocked me that this happened in the first few pages.

The subplot of The Kingdom and the new leader seems compelling enough to me. I have a feeling that William will become central to the plot at some point after the war.

I'd love the course that the comic series has taken weren't it for Alpha's murder.

    Michonne Miniseries Pete Reappears

    Siddiq asks Pete for help.

Pete from Michonne Miniseries makes an appearance again, and this time he interacted with Siddiq, whom we learnt in the video game that was part of the former's crew. This adds some continuity between the two media. Pete gets character development as we witness for the first time that he values pragmatism over selflessness. Did Pete lose his ways during the two year time-skip?

This Savior Is A Recurring Character

    Reappearance of Tara.

Tara is a recurring character. She first made an appearance in Issue 104, threatening to sever Paul Monroe's testicles if he didn't surrender. She was featured once again with Mark and Sherry when Dwight leaves The Sanctuary, claiming that the group is better off without him.

    Whisperer Eating Horse?

    Whisperer eating horse?

Self-explanatory subtitle. Do you think that the walker in the second to last panel is the Whisperer that stabbed the man riding the horse?

    Magna, Yumiko, Connie and Kelly.

Magna's group takes part in war.

The remainders of Magna's group are all taking part on defending the communities, even though Kelly and Connie previously showed discontent over following Rick Grimes.

  • What are the whisperers

  • The Whisperers are a nomadic group of survivors featured in the comic series, who take the skin off walkers and wear it on themselves as a suit to remain unnoticed by the undead. I estimate that they're anywhere from three hundred to a thousand, though it's been hinted that we've only seen one of many groups. They organize themselves as wolves—Alpha, Beta, etc.

Due to some misunderstandings regarding territory, the Whisperers and the protagonist communities are at war.

  • I do not remember that period of the comic thoroughly, as I haven't read through it for over a year. Can somebody point out how Carl is responsible for the beheading massacre or the war with the Whisperer?

And Carl wanting to get laid. Don't forget that...

  • Good issue. There was a lot of hopping around to different areas in this issue and was hard at times to figure out where they were (for instance at first when they showed the Savior camp I thought it was the Kingdom until the Kingdom did get shown later on) but still a really interesting issue.

I think Andrea is pretty much safe during this war as it looks like Kirkman is keeping her right by Rick's side so she won't see any harm. I am getting a feeling that Negan will be the major death during this arc. His character is being given a full circle development and that often times is a sign that they are about to be killed off. I also don't think readers would ever buy Negan as a good guy so I don't think Kirkman will try to make him be a part of Alexandria.

  • I'm the same. I didn't realise it was him till the letters. It gets hard reading once a month with such a huge cast

I don't like Negan that much now, ever since the time he met up with The Whisperers I have found him to be more and more irritable. It's like he tries too hard to be funny and it's almost every time when he appears now.

Does anyone else think Negan's character has become more annoying recently?

  • Holy shit what an issue, but poor Gabriel. While the war with the Whisperers is certainly intense and has my full attention, I'm still very interested in seeing what's going to go down at both The Kingdom and with The Saviors. It seems that they may both at some point turn against Rick, which could end up bad if they're all busy fighting The Whisperers. United we stand, divided we fall.

I don't know how, but Kirkman continues to find such amazing lines for Negan to say. "I'm about as useful as a fingerless eunuch during Fuck Fest February! Someone give me a gun!"

  • Dude, five edits? Seriously?

Does anyone else think Negan's character has become more annoying recently?

    That, and less sympathetic, too.

  • Pretty sure Alpha did the massacre as a warning for them not to trespass. Don't really think Carl had anything to do with it.

  • That is what I was thinking, though she might've been motivated to do so seeing that Carl had been trespassing the border back and forth. Did she know that he had been to the Whisperer camp while she was at the fair?

Alpha knew that Carl followed them considering he got caught but I think that was it. I don't remember Carl going back and forth. Soon after Alpha returned Carl and Lydia to Rick is when she revealed what she did.

  • Awesome issue. 8 casualties suffered. I don't know how they're going to defeat The Whisperers at the rate they're going. They've really gotta revise their attack/defence plan.

  • I've been wondering why they haven't sent a team on horseback to deflect the herd, like the one that caught Magna's group off-guard during A New Beginning.

Or, you know, throw a Molotov onto the herd and it'll collapse.

  • I was thinking explosives myself. Then again, they did kinda sneak up on them. On the other hand they should have been prepared for this. Rick saw 1st hand, the capabilities they had. He should have prepared for the worst. Especially after King Ezekiel. Then on a totally different hand, it's kinda Negan's fault for killing Alpha and inspiring that kind of rage within Beta.

Just a lot of moving parts. Can't wait for the next issue.
