The Walking Dead: Negan's Rule Interactive Game
Hello whoever cares to read this, I've finally returned to the world of writing. After a long break, I am coming back to write another Walking Dead Story. This will be a little bit different however. I have been experimenting with the program "Twine", which allows you to create Interactive Games with Branching Paths. I have started to work on my first game using Twine, which will be A Walking Dead Story, as I have experience writing in that universe (Referring to My Walking Dead Game Season 3 Fanfic)
This game is titled "The Walking Dead: Negan's Rule". It takes place in The Comics (And therefore, The Game) Universe of The Walking Dead, so it has no connections with the TV Show. Any prior knowledge of The Comics is not required to understand this story, as it takes place before Negan's famous debut in The Comics.
Now here's a quick summary: ***One year into the apocalypse and Todd and his wife, Karen, are still struggling to survive. Alone and afraid, they are found by Negan, the ruthless and intimidating leader of The Saviors, a fairly large group of survivors near Washington DC. The feeling of safety soon disappears when Todd and Karen start to realize what kind of a person Negan really is. Now struggling with the ideals of morality and facing their own demons, can Todd and Karen survive under the dangerous rule of Negan? ***
Here is a list of things I hope to include in the game:
- Choices That Actually Matter
- Multiple Endings
- Branching Paths and Storylines
- At Least 2 Hours Of Playtime For Every Single Playthrough
- Good Replayability Value
I can't wait to see what you guys think!

First comment. That bites. The game sounds cool. What platform would you release it for?
Sounds interesting. How far in development are you?
Twine is a browser based application that lets you create text based adventure games.
Like so:
So the answer to your question would be PC only, since the finished games are also browser based and can be hosted by some websites.

Twine is great. I've currently started working with it (also on a TWD game) when I previously only used textadventures.co.uk from time to time, but always gave up in frustration. They don't even have variables or macos on that page afaik, so creating games with actual branching storylines was tedious, if not impossible.
I'm excited for your game. Will you factor in any things that happen in "Here's Negan!"? Either way, it should be cool to view Negan from the perspective of someone who might not be hating his guts already.
Would love to play it! Good luck with developing, man.
I tried textadventures.co.uk as well but Twine is much better imo. To answer your question about "Here's Negan!", absolutely. Negan is an interesting character and even though my game obviously isn't canon, I hope to explore him more and the times that take place before he bumps into Rick and Co. Negan's also incredibly unpredictable, which makes it interesting when you're trying to choose wether or not you want to do the morally right thing, or the thing that will help you gain more of Negan's favor.
Also if you don't mind me asking, when do you plan on releasing your game? It would be fun to play another TWD Game that was also built with Twine.
it sounds awsome hope you make it I love negan.
Glad to hear it, there will be plenty of Negan in this story
As of right now I have a rough draft of the whole story and only some of its branches, so not very far. The good thing is I work on it in bursts of up to 2-5 hours whenever I can so I get through a lot of it fairly quickly. I hope to get the first demo out by Christmas.
Thanks man! Definitely stay tuned, I update as frequently as I can
Well, in my view a fan story/game etc. is semi canon unless it contradicts things that happen in the source material. Since your game takes place before the comics, I'd say it is canon unless you decide to kill off Negan or some equally big change. It's always interesting to have choices that you can't be sure will be judged as you think they will, so I'm looking forward to that.
As for my game, it'll be a while until that comes out. I haven't decided yet what new direction I can take a source material like TWD in that hasn't been done to death in both official and unofficial media. I've set up a short beginning, but not much so far.
I can share some things, though. It will most likely be named "The Story of Catherine" and be about, well, Catherine. I haven't set her up much, but she's an original character who is friends with a minor game character that only appeared in "A New Day" and a trailer. Episode 1 will most likely be called "End of Time". I aim to do some things Telltale or Kirkman can't do because of money and time restrictions, like having many different story branches and a more morally grey protagonist, as well as giving a more detailed look at the collapse of society (no coma or car crashes).
will you post the link for the story once your finished?
Of course, but before the full game comes out I will be releasing demos and stuff like that along the way. I'm aiming to get the first demo out by Christmas this year
do you have price in mind for how much the game will cost? or will it be free?
100% Free my friend, all I ask in return is continued support as the development process continues
It's a twine. That basically means its a free "choose your own adventure," book.
well you definitely have my suppot friend. I have a feeling that this story is going to be a good one.
Hey guys, how's everyone doing? I just wanted to let you all know that the game is coming along nicely. The prologue is very close to completion and the planning for the story branches is coming to a head as well. Also, starting tomorrow I will be starting to introduce some of the characters in the game, of course with no real spoilers to the game. The first introduction tomorrow will be for Todd, the protagonist of the game. Stay Tuned!
Awesome cant wait! for you to release this! also have you ever thought about doing a game of thrones twine game?
Absolutely, if all goes well with this one I might do a Game of Thrones one
You have my support as well!
Best of luck with the game.
Thank you it is very much appreciated!
Sounds great! You definitely have my support on this one!
Character Introduction # 1: Todd
Todd is the main protagonist and the main playable character of the game. He is at the age of 29 when the main game takes place, one year into the apocalypse. He is married to a young woman named Karen, whom he has sworn to always protect. Todd has scruffy dark hair and green eyes.
Before the outbreak, Todd worked as an architect. After a terrible tragedy shakes him to his core, the outbreak begins. Over the past first year of the apocalypse, Todd has had to do things that could be considered inhumane in order to keep himself and his wife alive. Him and Karen are also very wary of other groups of survivors due to their last group crumbling under a dictator. Now forced to join The Saviors for Karen's sake, Todd must grapple with Negan himself, and maybe even more.
Is todd alot older than his wife?
Not at all, Todd is 29 while Karen is 27
UPDATE/NEWS
Development is going smoothly as I continue to map out the story and its many branches. However, that demo I said that would be released around Christmas Time is sadly not happening. However, I think you'll be happy about why I chose to do this...
I have something very special planned for the upcoming Holiday Season. This very special thing is none other than a sort interactive side story to Negan's Rule. I haven't come up with a good title for it yet, but it is going to be a sort interactive game taking place only one week before the main events of the main game of Negan's Rule. The playable character will be Negan, which I think is going to be a lot of fun. This short side story should be released around Christmas Time as a replacement for the Negan's Rule Demo.
Now, the reason I chose to hold off on the demo is simply because I have nothing good for showcasing. Sure, I could just have the beginning of the game as the demo, but I feel like that would be spoiling it to much. Even big plot details that are in the very beginning are going to be kept under wraps, as I feel that revealing that stuff would just make the full game less enjoyable when it eventually comes out.
Hopefully you're excited for the new upcoming side story. I'm having a lot of fun writing it, and I hope to have it ready at its full potential by Christmas Time.
Thank you for updating us. I look forward to playing both games and giving feedback.
are we still going to be playing as todd and karen?
In Negan's Rule yes, but for the short side story you will be playing as Negan.
Awesome to hear you're back, you've actually been the inspiration for me to make an interactive game of my own (Marvel based) Telltale like, so thanks! And Twine looks useful so I will consider that.
Thanks! Wow it feels really good that I was your inspiration. I'll be looking forward to your game!
Well one of the inspirations, but I saw what you were doing with your Walking Dead and GOT stuff and a couple of similar things online and thought 'Since I ain't getting a Spider-Man: Civil War Telltale style game, might as well try and make one'. And thanks! I haven't gotten a date for Episode 1 of 6 finalised yet but I wrote a lot of it over NaNoWriMo so hopefully with a few months it'll be ready.
Just about to start writing the short side story. The title will be The Walking Dead: Fearing a Monster. The story is simple and fun, and it is definitely a nice little self contained story.
You know what? I'm gonna give the synopsis of Fearing a Monster now also as well. Read it and tell me what you think.
SUMMARY
After only a few months since the establishment of The Saviors, Negan rules feircly over his people. Accepting and embracing his philosophy of "Not feeling anything at all to survive," Negan casts fear into the hearts of the men and women that he leads. Now, a small encampement near The Sancuary refuse to accept The Savior's terms and also refuse to leave. Now, Negan must personally visit the small encampement to enforce his rules on them. The petty survivors may think they have seen bad things, but they have never met the one and only leader of The Saviors, Negan.
Got some more info about Fearing a Monster to share.
Just a heads up, if you want to see everything that Fearing a Monster has to offer, you'll want to play through it multiple times with different choices chosen.
I am excited about this project once again!
When do you believe "Fearing A Monster" will be published?
Around Christmas time. I'm not sure about the exact date yet, but if everything goes smoothly it should be out before the New Year starts.
I love your avatar.
Wahoo! I'm soooo looking forward to playing this. :-))
