Why do you think the new Walking Dead is called A New Frontier?

I'm a little disappointed that it's called a New Frontier, but what do you guys think? Do you also prefer being it called A New Frontier, or Season 3?

  • Probably so they don't scare off newer fans by making them think they have to play 2 older seasons, like a soft reboot.

  • Well there are a couple of reasons.

    1. Yes they do not want to scare off new players.

    2. The name represents the fact that civilization is rebuilding. Humans are doing what they have always done...adapt to the situations around them. Yeah there are hoards of walkers going around and eating folks...and yeah there are hoards of humans going around and beating folks. Building walled communities to collect like minded people and providing a place for society to take root and grow is very important. Now you have a situation much like the wild west in America...or city states in Greece.

  • Yes any numbering system other than Star Wars for a franchise tends to be a bit of a turnoff for most people.

Also it is likely a play off of the New Beginning title the comic had when it basically reinvented itself after the Saviors War. Since this game seems like it will take place within that same timeframe as New Beginning that would be a good reason to give it a similar name.

  • I'm not saying it's an inappropriate name, but season 2 could have just as easily been called this considering you're alone within the first few minutes, and much of it revolves around journeying to safer areas and how different groups of people are surviving. Between the name change, and them making it clear Clem is returning for Javiers story, it looks like they're want to create a separation between the originals and this one. They're not throwing out the continuity, just making it optional. Which is great for new fans, but I just found it to be disappointing after a 2 year wait.

The most questionable thing is: Why couldn't they just name it The Walking Dead Season 3: A New Frontier?

The survivors are starting to rebuild civilization. Communities like Alexandria, Hilltop, the Sanctuary, Oceanside, Wellington and Chulburg are forming, and most people join one of those. So the title likely refers to this new beginning of society.

  • Maybe they think saying it's season 3 might also scare off new players.

I'd imagine it's something to do with the whole ideology of the apocalypse.

America sort of formed as a frontier country. But that frontier, at least in my mind, died when things like barbed wire fences and the like came to being. Before that, there was this country full of opportunity, ripe for the taking. Forming the various states diminished this, however, as now everything is neatly compartmentalised and organised by states. An apocalypse that is the scale of The Walking Dead would be tearing down those fences. Which I guess is why the theme is so popular - the idea of everything being new again.

I'd imagine that the "New" Frontier would be humanities second go at colonising America. People would be free from the quote unquote rat race and could pursue their own destinies and make their own fates. Which I think is what the title represents. That level of freedom that just wasn't there before, but with the end of the world people wouldn't have these frontiers. State lines would become more and more blurred, with different communities squabbling over whose land belongs to who, and the like. And so America becomes just one big frontier again - one long, undivided land mass. At least, until people start fighting over land again.

But hey, that's just my half asleep brain throwing ideas together. I could be completely wrong.

It's probably just because it's a cool title.
