21:9 support for Season 3?

Will TWD S3 be finally the game that supports 21:9? I doubt it, but hope so.

Will it have "cinematic" black bars like Batman, which will then make the game unplayable on a 21:9 screen (because this means black bars on all 4 sides of the image)? An official answer would be greatly appreciated. Though, my experience tells me that won't happen.

You're right. I don't why they think it's a good idea. Does anyone really like this? I could live with a full 16:9 image, even if that is already so frustrating on a 21:9 display (while most other developers nowadays support 21:9 out of the box). But a cropped 16:9 image, which results in double-letterboxing? No thanks. I love the Telltale games, but it makes me really sad to see how they ignore a growing part of their playerbase (which ironically has the most "cinematic" displays, so there are few games that are as suitable for those displays as the TT games).

  • Is anyone from TT active on the forum at all? Like a community manager or something? I guess they are simply choosing to ignore the issue completely.

  • telltale's game have a real issue with 16:9 and higher. that tends to be when the game lags the most.

  • TWD:ANF will have cinematic black bars but only during cutscenes, when the game gives you the option to pick a dialogue, it goes away.

  • Well, the game is probably 60% cutscenes. ^^ not really what i was hoping for. if they just made the black bars optional, i would probably keep my copy. even without 21:9 support. but not like this. this will most likely be a refund tomorrow. as sad as that makes me...

They [the black bars] seldomly appear, you wouldn't even notice them.

  • believe me, on a 21:9 display the TT games are small enough. i absolutely will notice whenever the image gets even smaller.

  • The only option I can see is to submit a request to the Support team to hopefully have a patch to support 21:9 display. It's a shot in the dark - I know - but you won't know unless you try.

  • someone already asked that, the answer was this:

    Hi,
Unfortunately, we do not support 21:9 ratios for any of our games. I apologize I could not assist you further with your request. We recommend a maximum width of 16:9 for our games.
    Regards,

so they don't seem to be willing to do anything about it.

  • The bars are literally in just the opening. They are gone forever after that

  • Hm, if that's true i might consider keeping the game. You already finished both episodes? Can anyone else confirm that (no offense, freelancepolicefan)?

I finished both episodes, but I understand if you don't trust me. maybe it was the resolution i was playing at, but they were just in the the little intro (like 5 minutes tops).

  • no, i believe you. i just wanted a second opinion to be extra sure. but it doesn't like i will get one, at least not until now. ;)

but honestly, even if i keep it - it's still so annoying that they ignore us 21:9 users completely. if you ask their support, they "recommend" to use 16:9. as if i buy a new monitor just for their games. they should just arrive in 2016 (finally, only a few days left ^^) and do what everyone else does, which is of course to support different aspect ratios including 21:9. that's really not too much to ask.

  • your engine is very capable of supporting different aspect ratios like 21:9. a simple memory hack produced this:

all you need to do is invest a day or two and fix the obvious issues. i really don't feel like this is too much to ask. the game is glorious in 21:9. just buy a 21:9 monitor for a few hundred bucks, put it in your office and show it to the team. i bet many will be impressed by how cinematic it looks on such a screen.

Came from the steam thread, I would definitely purchase the game if the game supported 21:9 by default.
The same goes with the Batman series. I appreciate that you didn't try the whole 21:9 in 16:9 mess that Batman had again (creating 4 black bars with a small viewing area in the middle of the screen), which is a plus, though native support would go a much longer way to convincing us to buy.

Supporting 21:9 would also make sense if Telltale wanted to continue the 21:9 cinematic look from the Batman series for your other games.

Otherwise, i'm more interested in watching a playthrough rather than purchasing the game for myself, and i'm sure many others feel the same.

  • i fully agree. thanks for the support!
