Want to buy this, but do I need to be familiar with any backstory?

I may be interested in trying this out, but do I need to be familiar with any sort of backstory (games, books, shows/movies, etc.), or can this be played as a stand alone?

Not really. This is Telltale's own adaptation and they explain Batman's origin story really well. Worst thing that could happen is you don't recognize iconic characters but this is a brand new story so that doesn't really matter.
I'm not a DC fan and I loved this game. This is a what if story made by Tell Tale. You need to hurry and buy this game as its my favorite TT game now.
Nope. Every backstory is explained. I never had anything to do with Batman except for playing Arkham Asylum.

Well, just finished the first 3 episodes, and it is indeed amazing! I'd say it's approaching Tales Of The Borderlands as my favorite telltale game, and will probably surpass it.
I agree. If you know who some characters are or become in comics and Bruce doesn't know it yet it's hard to make choices not influenced by this knowledge.

I enjoyed the story.
Choices do matter in this game as the writing is very good.
There are no plot holes and the ending is very very good.
The final boss is the best final fight in any TT game in my opinion. I've watched this fight numerous times on YouTube.
The detective work is very well done and it's done in a way that makes sense.
The characters are superbly written. Every villain and every person matters to you and you want to save them all.

The final fight was indeed awesome. A lot of final fights tend to be underwhelming, but this one was top notch. One of the best final fights I've encountered in gaming history to be honest.
I'm happy to hear this. I think that the same staff that made Tales made this series also. There were a number of people that didn't like this series and I don't understand how they didn't.
Everyone has their own opinion, but I definitely agree. This was the best Telltale series by far, in my opinion. No surprise that the same team that made Tales also made this, lol.
I am not a fan of all those super heroes. Marvel. DC etc, but I will buy this and give it a try
I didn't know much about the Batman universe and I could follow it reasonably well. I don't think a lot of the telltale plot was canon anyway. It integrated a lot of the Batman villains at the same time. That being said, it was really well done, especially with The Joker.
This game is amazing. I love it even more because you see a lot of Bruce Wayne and that's rare in a Batman game.
Gaming History is a little much, but it was really good!
