Season 3 Story Recreation - TellTale's 42 Starting Points and All Differences
So after an investigation, it turns out that TellTale didn't bullshit everyone on the '42 starting points' thing. However, it is still visibly shallow and not entirely evident as to what effect these points have on the game.
In total, the number of 'points' for each S2 ending are as follows:
- 17 Jane points
- 15 Kenny points (7 for Wellington 8 for Kenny)
- 10 Alone points
Furthermore, amongst these points
- 11 are available by not shooting Lee
- 31 are available by shooting Lee
Each point does have it's own title to sum up the attitude of Clementine in that ending. However, the summarising lines are shared between multiple endings, not being too impressive as a result. These shared opening lines, which are a direct result of your choices in the quiz, are:
- In Season 2, Clementine maintained a distance from others, often putting her own safety first.
- In Season 2, Clementine longed for a place that was safe, but it always seemed out of reach.
- In Season 2, a determined Clementine did what she felt necessary, regardless of others' opinions.
- In Season 2, Clementine stayed level-headed and compassionate in a world of chaos and cruelty.
- In Season 2, Clementine tried to keep the peace in a world that had largely abandoned those principles.
- In Season 2, Clementine stayed alert and asked smart questions about what was going on.
- In Season 2, Clementine made her way through the terrifying new world by sticking to one simple goal: survive.
- In Season 2, Clementine showed loyalty to friends and family even in the most desperate situations.
After this summarising line, it then follows through with whichever choice you made in the division of the Kenny, Jane and alone endings.
- When Kenny and Jane's infighting put everyone at risk, Clem reluctantly shot Kenny to save Jane's life.
- Clem watched Jane provoke a fight with Kenny that ended in Jane's death.
- But when their car broke down in a snowstorm, Clem had to make some brutal choices about Kenny and Jane.
After this, the summary then ends off with whichever sub-ending you chose:
- Clem, AJ, and Jane then returned to Howe's, where they refused to let in a family of strangers.
- Clem, AJ, and Jane then returned to Howe's, where they took in a family looking for shelter.
- AJ, Kenny, and Clem continued on to Wellington, where Clem learned Kenny would not be allowed in. Clem said goodbye to Kenny through tears.
- AJ, Kenny, and Clem continued on to Wellington, where Clem learned Kenny would not be allowed in. So they left Wellington together.
- Clem finally realized she could only rely on herself to keep AJ safe.
Essentially, to keep each ending 'different' each point has a different mix and match of the 3 determinant sections above, which results in the 42 points.
The titles of the 42 points specifically, with their respective lines and how you get them, are as follows:
DO NOT SHOOT LEE

There you have it. All the outcomes of the reconstruction. Some other fun facts:
- The recreation can ask between 6-10 questions depending on your choices.
- Questions 1, 3 and 4 are completely irrelevant (at a glance) to which starting point you get. They appear to only be there for flavour or have no observable effect on the game right now.
- There are three questions that are rare to get. These are:
- Your decision on whether you think it's right to take from others (i.e Arvo) - only asked 3 times with 6 outcomes
- Your decision on whether to give water to the dying bandit - only asked 2 times with 4 outcomes
- A question on why you think it's right to be in a group - only asked once with 2 outcomes (shown below)
*Some questions are shown with the same slide but have different ways on presenting them depending on your route so far.
There you have it. The recreation more or less deciphered.
In my opinion, it's a cool idea that was forced to be shallow because of TellTale's self-imposed limitations. The idea that we actually have 42 potential personalities and viewpoints for Clementine is enthralling but almost dynamically impossible.
What do you think of this system? What could TellTale have done to make it better? Is there something I missed here that isn't presented? How do you think, if at all, these will come into play besides the change of endings?

Neat find! It's impressive that you did all that work!
I ended up with these questions:
Lee taught Clementine the importance of : Survival
Lee told Clementine to : Shoot Him
After Lee's death, Clementine found more survivors. People who helped her, such as: Kenny
Clementine remembered the joy she felt when she was reunited with Kenny. He showed her that survival depended on: Family
Thanks to her companions, Clementine's journey ultimately led her to: Wellington
At Wellington, the community would not let Kenny in. Clementine decided to: Leave with Kenny
Clementine learned the hard way that survival depended on: People
It never got any easier. Clem remembers how she stopped AJ's dead mother from biting him during an ambush, but drawing her gun risked angering their attackers, Clementine chose to: Shoot Rebecca
I ended up with: Clementine stayed level-headed and compassionate in a world of chaos and cruelty./Clem watched Jane provoke a fight with Kenny that ended in Jane's death./AJ, Kenny, and Clem continued on to Wellington, where Clem learned Kenny would not be allowed in. So they left Wellington together.
This is incredible work, @Davissons! Bumping so that others see it, too.
Would you allow me to use your screenshots on my thread?
Don't really need my permission but sure, use whatever you want.
I refused the water bottle to that dying man. Only because of Christa.
tl;dr
There are "42 starting points" that are all relatively the same when it comes to Clem's character.
Hopefully we'll see some of that in the next 3 episodes unless they straight out lied about it.
This is really interesting and great to see it laid out like this. I had trouble initially carrying my save over and I started to use the generator but found some of the questions impossibly vague - I mean in terms of trying to remember what my Clem actually learned. Glad I got my save working. If saves become a problem (as it seems some have for many people), it would be good if Telltale could update older versions to spit out these answers so at least we have clear reference because it does make a difference feeling like our choices are reflected, if even in small ways.
Seriously, great work.
Had to read this whole thing 3 times to comprehend how in depth you went with it. How in god's name did you do this?
I don't remember why my personality was so recreated my story again (I also forgot what choices I had made so I think it was one of these)
"SEASONED SURVIVOR"
"DO THE RIGHT THING"
I accidentally deleted my save while trying to find out by getting just about an idea from my season 1 and 2 saves and I got even tempered.
