well all we know is crista and clem got separated and we know those guys tried to shoot crista so either she got lucky and they missed or they actually got her and killed her

We don't know that she's dead but she's gone. That's it, just gone. Sometimes you don't know.

I recall her hinting at something long before the game came out as well. Part of the reason I assumed she'd return.
