I don't dislike the new look but I do prefer the look of the first two seasons. To me they look as if they could have come off the page of the comic, season 3 seems more cartoon than comic (if that makes sense.)
So it is the same apart from all the things that are different.
The thing is those changes you describe do change how the games looks. A different lens are you say can completely change how a picture or movie is viewed, it is the same here with Season 3.
The design intention may be the same but how it is now viewed has changed how people perceive it.

S3's still the same style from the first two seasons, j… moreust higher fidelity overall-- better shading, lighting, texture resolutions, jigglebones, etc. Characters still have outlines and sketch marks on their clothing/faces, just like the first two seasons. The same stuff is still there. The style itself didn't change-- the way it was rendered did. It's still based on the same design/aesthetic philosophies as the first two seasons, just being seen through a slightly different lens, so to speak.
Someone in the forums somewhere mention some sort of thing that explains why some of us like the "older" version. I forgot what's called. … moreI'll see if I can find it.
For me personally, I thing TellTale also made the facial features more proportionate to real human anatomy. The Season 1 and 2 faces seem more exaggerated in a way that make them cartoonish but not too much. Like it's obvious it is the same engine, it's just those small changes are... it's hard to describe. It's kind of like how GOT did the water-color thing or how TWAU has a lot of color and contrast.

Does Clementine look a little short to anyone else? Because when I see her standing by herself I picture her as adult height like Kate or Eleanor but I'm fairly certain she's a lot shorter than them.
When all of the cast is standing on the gate at Prescott, she can barely look over the small wall that provides some protection. Kinda cute and funny. She's short.
