How did David become separated from Javier/Kate/Kids and became NF Leader

Maybe they got separated on the day of the outbreak when they went to the hospital in separate cars... but something extreme must have happened for both parties to have assumed the other was dead(?) and given up on the other.

Car accident DUH!
Well, for one thing, two people in the family had been bitten and they were riding in both vehicles (one in the other). So, in my opinion, they both could've turned at some point because, like Javier said at the beginning, the traffic was backed up for miles and what're the chances that they could've been right around each other when they turned? David was on his own with their mother, who was bit on the cheek. If she suddenly attacked him, then that would be plenty reason to run off or it could've caused him to crash or something.
They were attacked by a group of wild boats and forced to go into separate ways .
They definitely got separated after that whole ordeal. The flashback in Ep. 2 was probably when their mom was in the hospital (after she was bitten) because they had zero downtime during the first flashback.
Hm, makes sense.
Splitting up was the decision that doomed them. Every mile put between you is 100x more when there are traffic jams, walkers, and widespread panic.
