How do you feel about playing as Javier?

  • As I said before, Javi is growing on me every day. I REALLY like him. He's my Luke 2.0. He's handsome, loyal and you can see he's a good person just trying to survive just like anyone else.
Besides, it's cool just watch Clementine. And letting her surprises me. Like... Always.

  • I agree it's OK playing someone else as the protagonist and having Clementine as the deuteragonist. Both of them make a good team.

I say it again here, having multiple main characters alive and well gives a big chance upon expanding and fleshing out the story.

  • I know that I sided with Clementine at every chance. I stood up for her when she kills Eli, stayed with her to fight the bandits after Kate is injured, I shot Conrad instead of taking Clementine hostage.

Do I enjoy playing as Javi? Very much so. His character just seems to work, whichever decision you choose. You can truly shape him pretty different personalities based on your choices, major or just dialogue wheel.

But it's not all sunshine and rainbows: I do feel that the treatment Clementine gets just doesn't work out that well. Contrarly to some, I don't mind Clemmy being more hardenned, after all she grew up in a crapstorm watching basically everyone she cared about die. On the other hand, some of her important choices felt out of character for me, that wasn't my Clem, it could suit another but not mine. And that's the meat of the problem here. When a character was playable for an entire season, you build them up as you play, pick what feels natural for you and these character. Results, everyone ends up with a different personality at the end. And no matter how hard they try, right now Telltales just can't create a different Clementine for each player. Sure, they can tweak her personality a little bit but at some point there will be a choice or a piece of dialogue that just won't feel right for the players. That's why I thought it was a better idea to either play as Clem again or exclude her of the story, with just a cameo that wouldn't hurt the player's perception of her just to appease the fan who want to know how she's doing. Though, I do think there could have been a better way to deal with her as a side character: let her have her tough survivor personality, after all it makes sense, but for general dialogue only; but when she has a bigger decision coming up, let us choose for her. In my opinion, it would have at least diminished the backlash mess. Also please, transition into backflash sequences better.

But, yeah, back on the main subject: Javi is coolio, I like him.

  • He's awesome so far.

  • It feels so weird taking over for him 4 years into the series. He's got this group, who are family members no less, and it's kinda like I'm expected to care about them but I've been through so much of the series without them, I can't just pretend they're gonna take priority over an established character because this is the story they're making me experience. If I'm making the decisions, it's tough to eliminate bias towards a character I've spent so much time around, especially because her personal journey has been a major driving factor in the progression of the series.

I'm heavily invested in this character and have grown to care about her, and that compromises my ability to make decisions involving characters designed to be a priority for story purposes, ignoring the fundamentals of the game and what made it so special.

I dont think introducing a new character, with an already established backstory into a game, that relies almost entirely on your choices, as

  • Definitely my thought as well, which is why I would have liked A New Frontier to be a spinoff or something, not that I dont like the game, I think its pretty good, but the fact that they gave the character so much backstory, and so many people he cares about, while still making him a super bland character, its just really hard to care for people other than the ones I know (Clem).

Also, the episodes are so short, that we barely get any screentime for half the characters before they get killed off or otherwise disposed off

Although I would never trade season 1 for anything else, I feel like Lee as a character would have worked better if not going with Clem this far into the series, he had some backstory, but there was nothing tying him to a place, or a person, the same way Javier has, which means that you could play him without preconceptions, whereas Javier has a preestablished (albeit somewhat bland) background and family, who basically all survived the outbreak, so there is so many things youre supposed to care about, but you dont.

Because caring about a character in a video game is hard to build, it takes time, it takes dialogue, Which is why the bond between Clem and the player, and Lee and Clem feels so strong, because we had so long with them, dialogue, banter, thats how you build care around a fictional character, you dont just stuff the player in the middle and tells him to care about people, which is where I think this game falls flat on its face, there is too much action and too little characterbuilding, like in season 1 when walking around the farm, or walking around in the store, thats not saying A New Frontier is bad, its just not really what I had hoped for

I hope for another Clem game at some point

Absolutely agree, I thought Lee was done well because within one episode we learn that he's been sentenced to jail, the details of his crime effectively ended his life with the people involved, and we find that his remaining family is gone. With all the new characters we were free to establish as much or as little of a bond with them as we wanted in the first few episodes, because we were experiencing the meeting through the character rather than having a preexisting priority to look after them, our char developed in a more natural way and it was an organic introduction to them and the series.

Couple the low playtime and the fact that we're led to believe this new group we're already with has been survived for the entirety of the first two seasons, and its difficult to build attachment when they suddenly start dying off. We had very little time with the characters who have died, and our character is feeling all of this loss while the player has no prior experience with characters lost in big moments. The shocking moment in episode one was no more impactful that the first moments of Eden Prime for me, because I'd spent a similar amount of time with them and it was clearly meant to be a more personal loss.

  • Yea 150 mins of game time in two episodes. Seems pathetic to me.

I like him a lot, he has the potential to become one of the best Telltale protagonists so far. But with that being said, I do wish we had a

  • I really enjoy playing as Javier. It's a nice change of pace as I don't want the Telltale Walking Dead franchise to become a Clemtatorship like the show became a Ricktatorship after season 2.

  • I agree, it seems like really lazy writing, that they have all survived for 4 years, and then as soon as the game starts, they start dying left and right

Since Walking Dead does a good job with almost everything I have to say I don't hate it, I just wish I could play as Clementine in continuation of Season 2. I mean if there wasn't Clementine I wouldn't mind playing as Javier and following his storyline it's just I just like Clementine a tad bit more. I suppose he was a baseball player judging by his outfit and how there was a talk with Conrad about it and how there was an option to ask him if he wanted an autograph and Conrad said if he had a bat he would get it.

I suppose his throwing skills and swinging skills were all gained from his days in the leagues. He is also the chick magnet like Luke was.
