  • How he physically and emotionally treats Javi, Kate and the New Frontier tells me he's pretty certainly abusive. I think one of my siblings agree.

  • The thing is though, when he spots the glass, the pieces are sitting in a blood and his automatic response isn't concern for whoever hurt themselves to bleed out that much, but the glass itself. Granted he could've been stressed out at the time but it doesn't excuse it.

Since they're not white but Mexican, I got the hint the household was traditional. David was the man of the house and Kate was his obedient

  • Like I said, she wasn't bleeding out, she felt better once she poured under water and put the rag on. I'm not trying to excuse everything David does, but some things make sense from his point of view.

  • That gives no right to punch someone.

I doubt he would drink when he wasn't depressed. And David did kinda have a legit reason to hit Javi because Javi (from what it sounded like

  • I think I need to see more scenes between David and Kate before I can make my judgement if David is abusive. For now, it just seems like that David and Kate argued a lot.

But considering that Kate showed feelings for Javier before the Apocalypse already hints that her marriage with David isn't working or at least have problems.

  • Abusive? Too early to say. At most, I'd say he was controlling and had a quick temper.

I think David and Kate's marriage may have been fraught with problems. Kate mentions herself how she feels David wanted her to change who she was. How she doesn't even miss him all that much. Kate's behaviour with Javi in the flashbacks suggests that maybe she was lonely and craved positive attention / affection (lack of worry about her bleeding, the hand holding) which she lacked from her relationship with David.

  • As someone who's all too familiar with this from a family relative, I'm convinced David shows strong signs of an abuser, if only on the mental abusive side of things. The way Kate was stressing out about the glass gave me a lot of concern and hit me hard, because I've been in that same place stressing about things worrying how so and so will react and if it'll be verbally aggressive [you even have Kate bringing up in that same scene David got angry if she didn't wash up good enough like he's some controlling perfectionist.]

That's sort of the thing about domestic abusers [man or woman] they don't even have to violently harm you with a beating, their words can be enough and most the time they might be the greatest person ever, and then they'll snap and they change into this completely different person who will bully and put you down. Then later they'll apologize and ask for your forgiveness, and you will because you love them. It's basically what happened to Javier in the beginning of Episode 1. If Gabe hadn't come out, David would've kept beating on Javier, and when he does cool off, suddenly David's telling his brother he loves him and how he was jealous and that Javier needs to be with his family from now on, as if telling him rather than asking.

And that's sort of the trap, and they might not even realize they're doing it, or think they're in the wrong. Maybe they have an excuse, like they have anger issues.

    enter image description here

The way Javi can bring up to Kate in Episode 1 about David getting people into his way of thinking, and Kate mentioning David wanting to change her is one obvious signs to me too about claiming dominance over other people. After David beats Javier up, Kate asks about the bruising on Javi's face and it just takes a look to realize David was the cause. It made me wonder after looking back on that if Kate stressed out because David has gotten violent with her and she's been hiding it. Maybe she genuinely did love David, but after finding out what he was like, she increasingly became more trapped in the role of the 'housewife' and might've wanted out of the marriage, and why she starts hitting on Javi.

Yes, it's a good chance the stress of their father dying, jealously of his brother's prior success at baseball, or PTSD from being in the army or from his previous wife leaving/dying that might be responsible for some of this. Maybe all of it is playing into David's anger issues. But fuck no, it doesn't excuse it if this any of these abuse theories turn out to be proven true. At this point with the New Frontier business trying to take over places like Richmond and branding members like it's something to be proud of, I've got zero tolerance for David.

  • I think the concern from that came from the way he phrased it. If I remember correctly it was

"My CO gave me that glass and unless you want to dig up his fucking corpse he's not gonna give me another one"

The tone he takes with her immediately from seeing the incident and also his exact words are very harsh and come off as unnecessarily hostile. I understand being upset about the glass but if his response had been more along the lines of "My CO gave me that glass, he's dead do you know how much that means to me?" I don't think people would even be having the argument of whether or not David is abusive. His words seemed aggressive and came across as abusive.

  • David is the asshole that Javier (you) are suppose to rescue Kate from. It'll be tough, because your at his mercy pretty much every time he shows up in the story. It would be strange that all this build up tension with David would be for nothing. Still it makes me wonder why Kate even liked the guy in the first place. She's not fond of his kids and she flirts extremely easy with Javier while talking smack on David. Talk about conflict waiting to happen.

  • Just going off what you said about it only taking a look to understand what happened to Javi, Kate then rolls her eyes, implying that this has happened before and maybe that David does this all the time, perhaps even with her.

  • I would think so due to his drinking from having PTSD, possibly.

Then again, Kate warming up to Javier seems really low for her in my opinion. She is just going to get Javier stuck in the middle and further damage his relationship with his older brother. Kate reminds me of Catwoman in this sense. She should have tried being more of a friend to Javier than anything else. For all we know, Kate could be manipulative.

  • Was he wrong in saying the way he did? Yes. Honestly, it's both their faults, David came off as unnecessarily rude, and Kate didn't really care that the mug had sentimental value to him.

I apologize. I usually use Yankee to refer to people born in the United States because it's shorter that United-States-ish or whatever.

  • We can't know for sure right now. It all depends on what Kate meant when she broke the mug. There is always the possibility that he is the kind of annoying, immature guy that puts on a frown and stays grumpy for days over small things and she doesn't want to deal with this kind of bull. It doesn't necessarily means he abused her.

However, my guess is that he is abusive. He gives me a Philip Blake vibe, while Javier gives me a pre-Woodbury Brian Blake vibe (I'm speaking of the comics and books here), which is why I also expect David to blame Javier for Mariana's death.

Though it unfortunately excludes many different countries, "American" usually refers to people from the United States. Though you probably already know this.

Kate may have been born in the United States, but she could still be ethnically Latina.

  • Using abusive as a broad term, he is indeed. If you tell David Kate wanted to leave him, Kate flips out and defends herself immediately, clearly in fear of his reaction.

I will go so far as to say this is why Clem left TNF in the first place. David is clearly in charge of these psychos, and from their uncaring and cold natures as we've seen so far, I can this clashing with Clem's beliefs. And Clem's reaction to hearing about TNF? I REALLY hope they haven't hurt my lil Clementine, cause hell is coming for them otherwise. Clem's deep breaths after hearing TNF were close, her closing her eyes and stepping away from the group, seemed very much like she was experiencing a panic attack. I can't shake the feeling that they did something awful to her and she made a run for it after that traumatic event. The fact that she feels that she can't be seen by them, and was willing to run away from the group, it's VERY clear that some sinister memory/punishment is waiting for her with TNF, run by our friend David.

If Clem is very afraid of TNF, it's clear that David ain't a loving man in his town. If he could cause a little 13 year old that much grief, I don't see how he'd have any issues hurting his own wife.

  • I don't get that impression from David. He seems like he really loves his brother, and Kate. When she apologises for breaking the glass, he lets it go.

  • Well David has his reasons....oh wait I'm thinking of Carver, don't kill me Carver lol. I'm sure that he is emotionally distant and it is possible that Kate cheated on him in the past. That creates an unstable relationship when he forgives her. It's possible that she cheated on him while he was overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan. He feels betrayed and only feels like himself when he is in uniform on a base. It seems that he highly respected his commanding officer and thought of him as a father figure. That's another reason that he gets upset over the coffee mug.

In some ways David blames Javier over what happened to her, yet still loves him like a brother. When the apocalypse happens, David takes this opportunity to create a unified empire and name it New Rome. David basically let's his military training kick in to restore order to the world.

  • Very insightful, thank you for sharing those links.

  • Yeah, Kate's actions are very suspicious indeed. There's definitely more to it in my eyes. David is meant to be misrepresented; it's Telltale's intentions.
