It doesn't have that "The Walking Dead" feel like in S1 and S2. What do you guys think of it

It doesn't have that "The Walking Dead" feel

Because it's copied from Batman's game, it doesn't fit. S2 had the best menu, with the changing background, those mutant textures when you pick something in the option menu and (anything but that S1 guitar) background music, and that one color scheme that changes the menu with a certain episode... oh man.

I guess the only thing I personally kinda liked is how they squished the credits and the choices together... too bad there's no credit song to go with it

  • Im assuming every menu from now on is going to look like that. Its not that bad, it doesnt feel super Walking Dead-y tho

  • Yeah, honestly, now that I think of season 2's menu I want a menu change badly. The menu is pretty awful, just like the music in the background which I immediately noticed. They should theme it more, just copy season 2's menu design or make it better, that'd be a good change. If they won't do it (let's be real, they won't even consider probably), then is there any way to make a mod for the game to change the menu music and themes?

  • I prefered the others seasons' menus, but this doesn't actually affect the game in any way so I don't care much,

  • I still think the old menu's gave it a really great theme and feeling.

  • I mean, we spend so little time in the menu. As long as the game itself is good I guess.

  • Still, it's a cool thing to have as an extra to further the game's theme. The graphics, the music, etc all made it quite nice, it probably wouldn't take long and I'm sure most would love to adopt the change. Plus they might keep using the same exact menu for every game the pull out, they should make it more unique.

  • On that I agree with you.

  • I think it's pretty neat.

  • I'm assuming this will become the "default" menu for all future telltale games from now on, with few minor tweaks. It looks really half-assed.

  • Its copy and pasted from Batman, it is full of advertisements, and doesn't have a Walking Dead vibe at all.

  • we spend so little time in the menu. As long as the game itself is good I guess.

Graphic designers gotta eat too ya know.

On that I agree with you.

  • They made it look like a TV app--Netflix, for example.

  • They do have the same font... and the same menu organization...

    ... oh don't tell me...

Compare the Batman/New Frontier Menus to Netflix's menu.

  • As others have said, it does strongly resemble Netflix. I really don't have an opinion on it, I don't think it's good, but not bad either. It would have been nice if there was some difference between it and Batman though.

  • Yeah, that just looked like pure laziness to me..... To be honest i think the best menu was Game of Thrones , with the charachters in front (who are alive for you) and the backgrounds of different places (determinant)

I think it would work if they had the game of thrones style to it.
Anyways this is pointless because they cant change and go all of a sudden..
    just me venting

  • They can graphically design the game as long as it makes them happy. :D

  • Literally anything they could do to cut down on expense or development time they did. Quite sad tbh.

  • It's not expensive or time consuming to give menus of all things individual flair. See my post above; they are evidently trying to go for a Netflix feel

  • Well it took them much less time to copy it directly from Batman than to make a decent looking menu.

  • Awesome! Now I have another reason to hate season 3: the menu resembles one of the worst movie streaming sites ever made.

  • Just like they could have saved time by copy pasting the menu from Season 1, Season 2, or Michonne.

  • maybe they were just trying to make it more simplistic, like someone mentioned how they mashed the credits and choices together

  • I do have to agree on this point that game menu is a criticism warranted, it does not have that feeling of Season 1 and 2 as others have said, it makes it feel more like a movie menu then a game one.

  • Good point. So they copied the Batman one to advertise their GOOD games.

Just like they could have saved time by copy pasting the menu from Season 1, Season 2, or Michonne.

  • Like others said, it's a Netflix sort of style. I will admit, I do miss the other menus and they are a lot more creative than Season 3's, but the menu doesn't really affect the game's quality.

  • It would improve the game's quality if anything, plus they've shown a lot of low quality writing, plots, characters, etc this season, so I'd at least hope they make a menu more creative.

  • It's ugly. Simple as that.
And I'm truly sad that Telltale got rid of all the small details that played a role in causing us to love the first two games as much as we do.

Like, the main menu and no "Previously/Next time on The Walking Dead" in Lee's voice, together with the recaps. And if the lack of Lee's actor was the problem, then they could've easily given Kenny/Jane or Clem the same lines and it would depend on your S2-ending which character you hear.

they've shown a lot of low quality writing, plots, characters, etc this season,

That's all subjective and can't really be proven through fact or deductive reasoning. (Not saying you aren't allowed to dislike the game, by all means, have your opinion. But that doesn't really contradict my claim in any way.) And plus, how exactly does a game's start menu determine its quality? It's a screen that you only spend thirty seconds to a minute in a half at most on.

I don't see why you're talking about subjective when the majority of the discussions here are subjective, no need to point this out.

This thread is about menus, I don't think I need to go into the 900,000 other threads explaining the major flaws of season 3, the point is just that some extra detail would be nice and it'd look less half-assed.

Considering the opinions in this thread, people say having a more unique TWD theme to the main menu would be a great improvement, and it just adds more detail to the game. It also sets moods for the chapters, season 2 did a great job at this, changing the colors, borders, etc. depending on the chapter, I loved it. This new menu is just a Batman copy with nothing really unique, it's boring, so yes it does improve the game's quality to have a better main menu.

I pointed that out because you stated the game as having poor writing and characters as a counter claim as if it were a fact, when it really isn't.

Fair enough, but I still don't understand how the menu screens affect the game as a whole. Sure, they may look nice, but how exactly does that set a standard for the rest of the game?

After being on these forums for as long as I have and witnessing the toxic shit storm during Season Two, I find that really hard to believe. If the episodes were exactly the same but the menu screens were the best damn works of art you've ever seen, people would still be expressing their dissatisfaction towards the game for the exact same reasons they're doing it right now. Hell, lots of people loved the menu screens for Season Two and people still really hated the game as a whole. So I really don't believe anyone would even slightly let up on this game even if the menu screens were visually appealing.

I was stating my opinion, it's very obvious.

I never said it sets the entire standard, I said it improves the quality and theme.

Hell, lots of people loved the menu screens for Season Two and people still really hated the game as a whole. If you were to ask them the pros and cons of Season Two, chances are they wouldn't even bring up the menu screens while listing the pros. (In fact you're the only person I've met that cited them as one of the game's highlights.) So I really don't believe anyone would even slightly let up on this game even if the menu screens were visually appealing.

Of course, no one brings up the main graphics often, which is why we're all talking about it in a thread about the lazy menu. It was never an issue before but now that season 3 came out, it's pretty damn lazy and ugly when you're viewing it. I'm only bringing out how much I loved the season 2 menu now because:
    1) We're in a thread dedicated to a menu design.
    2) I've always thought about it, but how often do you really discuss menus? Most of the time you're discussing plot, character development, etc, and most of this community has felt bitter and negative about season 3, it's all piling up right now and it makes me think of the menu in season 2, which again, really was well done in terms of art design and specific episode chapter rewinding, they should've ripped season 2's menu style but keep the "return to menu" and keep the main decisions on the side and it would've been great.

So are we really going to keep arguing about a menu, or are we just going to accept that the previous ones looked better and the newest one is a clear rip off of Batman's; that it's boring.

I do think the other menus look better. We agree there. This argument started because I didn't think it really affected the game's quality and you disagreed with me.

and the newest one is a clear rip off of Batman's

In the same way that the menu screens for Wolf Among Us, Season Two, Tales from the Borderlands, and Michonne were copy and pasted styles eerily similar to the menu in Season One? Be dissasstisfied with ANF's menu screen all you want, but this isn't the first time Telltale has used similar menu styles.

NOTE: I do apologize if I came off as passive-aggressive in one of my earlier comments. I am legitimately trying to be as civil as I can.

  • I'm not a big fan, but I guess it fits the direction they're taking the season. I vastly preferred the original games menu, this kinda feels generic and really hammers home that we're watching a story rather than involved in one. I could watch Netflix for that. I will watch Netflix for that. I'm gonna go start House of Cards next time I turn my system on.

  • Seems great to me.

  • If your going to hate a game based on a streaming site... Then I don't know anymore , this is being ridiculous
