Is Season Three worth my time?

Hey everyone, I understand that season three has been out digitally for quite some time now, but i've been waiting for the physical version coming out next month. But it would be nice if i could get some thoughts on the game so far (without spoilers!) and if i should even actually spend time on it. I loved Season One, one of my favorite games ever, it was great. But i didn't really enjoy season two as much. The whole thing in No Going Back with the various different endings was awesome but knowing Telltale it probably wont do much to season three anyway. I only recently played Michonne. Which also fell short to me, but I actually liked slightly more than i liked season two.

I did however LOVE tales from the borderlands so much, it became my favorite game from telltale for sure. I haven't gotten around to playing their other more recent games like GOT or Minecraft though. So yeah, let me know your opinions. Is Season Three good so far? hold up to One and Tales, or is it more like Two and Michonne? I suppose i'll still play it regardless out of curiosity but i'd like to know what to expect. Thanks in advance.

  • honestly, you may want to wait until the season finishes, and then ask for people's opinions. at the moment it's too early to say.

Opinions are pretty mixed, without getting too spoil-y

-Endings dont mean anything in S3, its a spit in the face

-Both episodes make up only 2 hours, Ep 1 is about 45 mins and ep 2 is about an hour and 10 mins

-Lack of character development- focuses way too much on action

    -Lack of hubs

-Illusion of choice is gone, its almost blatantly obvious that the story will not change

-Again with character dev, characters die and you dont care at all because you have 0 attachment

Right now I would probably say to just wait and see what happens. You cant really judge until the whole season is out, but for me Season 3 is not looking very hot at all.

After reading your thoughts on season 2 and TFTBL. I would say you should give this game a hard pass.

But it does have splosions, everyone loves splosions.

I'd say it partially depends on how open you are to the idea of the game essentially being almost a reboot rather than a more direct sequel so far. Clementine's heavily involved, but she's no longer the protagonist with Javier as the new protagonist. Javier's been pretty well received as a new protagonist.

If you have any reservations, you can always wait until the season's further along or wait for a sale.

  • Yikes, only 45 mins? Why didn't they just make those first two episodes into one then? Lack of hubs is a shame too I really enjoyed those to just take a breather and get to know the characters more. Everything else i've sort of come to expect.

  • Some people wait until a season is concluded (one of my housemates who's a huge Tellale fan does this) so as of right now we can only judge from the first two episodes. In my opinion though I'm really liking where this series is going. I think Javi is a great new lead and Clementine is still around more badass than ever before. I'm really liking the new cast overall as well. They're all quite dynamic and I'm looking forward to seeing what becomes of them in future episodes.

  • Yeah, something else you should know is there have been alot of lies from Telltale on this season.

They claimed that Ep 1 was so BIG so HUGE that it needed to be split into 2 separate episodes. However its pretty clear that they arnt, they really only have enough content for 4 episodes, they just split ep 1 in half so they could sell it as 5, plus we dont know if ep 3 will also only be an hour long.

Also, Clem isnt "really" a playable character. Its not like Borderlands where you swap evenly between Rhys and Fiona, you play as Clem only 5 mins per episode.

Clem also barely feels like she belongs in the story, she kinda just appears so people buy it because its "season 3"

  • Not yet. I think you should wait until at least Episode Three comes out and ask again then.

It's more like ~1 hour 10 minutes each for episodes 1 and 2, if you buy this game you're getting 4 episode because the first two was a huge scam from Kevin to form an illusion of "We're releasing two episodes on launch!" and "It was too big that we had to spit it in two!". It's just stupid, this game is definitely a let down compared to seasons 1 & 2 so far, hopefully it gets better in episode 3.

  • And how open you are to your choices not mattering. Oh wait wasn't that the comment I made that got flagged as trolling?

Sorry. Sorry. YOUR CHOICES MATTER. CLEM IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON HOW YOU PLAY.

Stop having a mental breakdown, no one cares how triggered you are right now.

  • Wow doomed if you don't praise TTG and doomed if you do.

  • From what i'm hearing I hope so too. They could make some comeback maybe, I remember episode 2 of Wolf leaving most rather..disappointed. Then episode 3 came out and it was the best thing they had made in a while.

  • I don't agree with your post necessarily on where the season is going, I'd still much prefer Clementine actually be the main protagonist, but I would like Javier and Clem to have a brother and sister type of relationship because Javier is still interesting, but knowing Telltale they'll kill anyone that surrounds Clementine, so who knows. I think we need more characters that we can relate to, and killing Kenny was a bad choice in my opinion as he was our last character from season 1 we'll ever meet, and our last friend that knew Lee.

(one of my housemates who's a huge Tellale fan does this)

Must be hard not talking about season 3 then.

It's terrible thinking about how brief the next "regular" length episodes will be if both parts of episode one was too huge. Must mean they've chopped all the rest in half to about 50 minutes at the best.

  • Telltale has received an ME3 style backlash about Clem not being the protagonist.

  • I'd say give it a shot and judge it yourself rather than base your opinion off a lot of the criticisms as most of them in my opinion are really exaggerated.

  • I bought one and two on release for the 360, bought myself an XB1 for Christmas and was really looking forward to this and have to say I'm very disappointed. I bought the season pass assuming it was up and running and couldn't believe how short the two available chapters were.

It could make a sterling comeback with what's still to come and I'll make a final decision on its worthiness after completion.

  • I'd wait until all the episodes are out first so you don't regret it and can /maybe/ find a spoiler free review.

  • Most people I see like him. People didn't like him before the trailer but now they like him just kind of like Rhys in TFTBL.

  • It's alright. Nowhere near as good as S1 and S2 (Or Tales for that matter), but not terrible either. Try out the first episode and see for yourself. Some advice before (if) you approach the season though: It's best to accept that choices don't matter. I wouldn't put much stock into "your choices affect your story... the game is tailored by how you play etc". You'll be very disappointed if you do.

  • I've been enjoying it so far. I really like the stuff they've been doing with Javier and his family, along with Clemmy too, although I'm hoping we get to play more of her in the future. I like the graphics for the most part, gameplay and story's solid. One of the few flaws it does have are Clemmy's flashbacks that tie to the Season 2 endings with certain characters. Apart from that, the rest of the game so far is pretty cool.

I'd say it's definitely your time, but if you're still unsure you could always wait a little until another episode or 2 is out before making up your mind.

  • not true. I have seen the majoity of people liking him

  • At this point I really can't, and haven't, recommended this season/whatever it is to anyone. It's definitely well below the first two seasons for me so far, and truthfully, feels more like a spinoff or side story than the sequel I've waited two years for.

The short lengths have not helped at all when it comes to building connection to the new characters, and there were a few big moments that had little to none of the intended impact on me because this. At times it kinda feels like they're going for these huge moments we got later in earlier seasons without taking the time to properly build the characters for them, like they forgot why the end of the first two seasons carried such weight and wanted those moments in the first two episodes with brand new characters. I would definitely suggest at least waiting to see if the next episode addresses any of the criticism, if it doesn't it's unlikely I'll even finish out the remainder of the game.

  • I agree with everything here 100%, but I'll probably just play the rest of the season anyways just so I know the story even if it's appalling.

  • Buy it if you don't really care that Clem is not the main character, that your season 2 choices are gotten rid of in 5 minute flashbacks, and that your choices don't really effect her personality

  • Something that I felt was frustrating is that all the role-playing from season 2 is made void, because they are dictating Frontier Clem's personality incredibly harshly, so all the nuance and interpretation of her expressions, actions, choices, and thoughts are completely destroyed.

Everyone had a slightly different Clementine, even if they made the same choices, because they interpreted her decision making process and actions differently, and personalized her in unique ways (despite how incredibly flawed Seasons 2's lack of choice and role-playing is, that is the nature of the playable character).

Javier has problems in that the dialogue choices are incredibly unclear on what he is actually going to say, and his personality and expressions don't chance very significantly between each option, making his personality feel a bit too defined, and restricting his role-play ability. Or at least in my opinion.

  • But Javier's problems are down to YOU alone. Like Job said. These games are not about what happens on the screen but what happens in your heart and mind.

  • I kind of miss being able to play as Clementine a lot. I personally chose to play season 3 because I'm just so emotionally invested in this story - the first season came out in 2012 so it's been 'part of my life' for four years now, I just need to know what happens next and neeeeeeed to experience it myself.

But, if you don't feel that way - (if you did, you wouldn't be asking it). Don't play it. I loved s1 and s2, but for me so far this season is way too short in every aspect and like everyone said, your choices don't make any impact at all. It's also difficult to be forced to emotionally connect to this entire family of new people you don't care about. You might as well just watch it on youtube. Maybe the rest of it will get better though!

  • If you've enjoyed any Telltale game ever, you've nothing to fear.
