Overlooked Issues In The Apocalypse

There are quite a few simple things that we do/can happen in life that could have a much bigger impact in the Apocalypse. For example, if a person had braces, that would limit their eating and they'd have to get them taken off somehow right? Or would they even be able to and how would they get the supplies to do that properly?

  • How do people use the bathroom and do they wipe? These are important questions here.

I'm surprised that we haven't met anyone with missing teeth. Everyone has perfectly white and straight teeth and in such a violent world you think someone would get a few teeth knocked.

  • Thank you for making this the first comment :D

  • People with eye problems having their glasses break/contacts run out

  • People who rely on contacts or glasses might have a big problem. Gotta have your glasses during the ZA in pristine condition constantly. And if your in just as much scraps as the walking dead people you're pretty much doomed. Damn things break easily.

  • I wonder if people would try to learn to rely on other senses? If their sight was significantly bad.

  • I suppose they shit wherever they go, and once the toilet paper is over, then I guess they either wipe with dead leaves or don't wipe at all.

How is it that gasoline still works four years into the apocalypse? Gasoline lasts 3-5 months but if it's left unmaintained or unused, it's totally useless. Even if you had a fuel stabilizer, that would only buy you an extra 6-8 months. Is someone running some sort of gasoline manufacturing plant and everyone in the apocalypse is a customer there? This never made sense to me in the game, the comic, and the show.

  • Yeah, I am wondering how long I would survive in a Zombie Apocalypse since I am wearing glasses. I guess that forces me to stick to range weaponry or long weapons like a staff or spear, since I know any intense close combat with zombies or hostile survivors put me at a disadvantages due to my vision and risk of losing my glasses.

  • Im asthmatic, without an inhaler in the apoc id be dead in like a month.

  • Or atleast be in a state were i couldnt sleep cuz i found it so difficult to breath and everyday would be pain. Id prolly have to off myself if i had no inhaler.

  • I've always wondered what happened to nuclear power plants, oil rigs, the ISS, and stuff like that, but that's over complicated.

A simple issue...how about fires? Like a fire left unattended that becomes a forest fire, or a lightning strike. There's no fire trucks or anything coming. What is going to stop that?

Big storms, like hurricanes and stuff. How are people going to deal with that?

More disease related stuff too I guess.

  • I'm nearsighted and would probably focus on ranged weapons as well, if I can help it. If my glasses break however I'm going to be on walker duty. My ranged skills would suffer tremendously but I'd still be able to make out the walkers well enough

  • If my glasses are broken, I think I will try and be a supporting hand for my group. I will try and help around with build and assisting with repairing stuff. Anything work that requires hands or close view. I can still do handy works such as repairing walls or anything else. Anything that keeps me from being regarded as useless and a liability.

If I am forced to fight, I think I will play an assisting and supporting role too. Such as handling weapons, guns and anything necessary.

  • That would actually be interesting. A survivor with bad sight that only survived because they has help, and now they're all alone and have to learn how to take care of themselves.

  • Well it also depends on how poor your eyesight is. I wear glasses and while it would be inconvenient I could definitely survive, I wouldnt be crawling around blind if that's what you're thinking. I just wouldn't be able to see faces or road signs from afar very easily.

  • How are people dealing with infected wounds and such ?
Even if you scratch yourself a bit it's likely you'll get infected if you don't use medicine. In the apocalypse you would think they don't always have the necessary stuff to deal with that and they can cut / scratch themselves or step onto a rusty nail or something.

Or another thing would be the environment: most people don't have shelter, they have to walk in the rain, at night; in these conditions you can catch a cold pretty easily and without proper medicine you could even die, or in extreme situations you could get hypothermia, hell Clementine falls into a river at night and she's just shivering a bit.

There's more such things but I'm kinda lazy to think about more

  • Oil rigs would be rather well off away from the mainland if they had a decent amount of supplies. Nuclear power plants and such would perhaps have electricity and incredible security features. These sort of places would be populated by the resourceful workers who stayed and didn't flee to find family.

Fires that got big enough would sweep through the countryside, burning everything in its path. Similar things happen in The Road, it would be a awespiring yet terrifying spectacle of nature.

Big storms would be a huge threat because there wouldnt be a weatherman to warn you, you'd have to rely on mother nature's cues.

We'd probably see less heart related problems given how most people would be moving and exercising a lot more, as well as eating a lot less. Diseases that require modern medicine like diabetes would be unsustainable and a huge drag on time and resources as the medical supplies get more and more rare with nobody creating any new ones.

  • How do survivors find water instead beyond finding plastic bottled waters. Should Clem have a water filter with her?

  • Why aren't people brushing and flossing their teeth? I know it sounds super dumb, but there are no dentist in the ZA. If one develops a root canal problem or a infected tooth those can be life threatening or living with serious pain.

  • How do they shower? What does Clementine's hair look like since she has been wearing that hat for 4 years now?

  • edited January 2017

I think beside having people get reanimated. The zombie virus that is in everyone also have the side effect of keeping everyone's teeth clean. Because as you know, every zombie needs their teeth and you can't have a toothless zombie.

I think the Zombie Apocalypse happened because the dentist were experimenting on a way to make sure everyone's teeth stay crystal clean.

Well people didn't use to brush teeth not all that long ago, relatively speaking, its fairly recent, especially floss and toothpaste

Teeth would be more likely to get infected etc but that's just what life used to be

  • Pour buckets of water over their head? In a river? That's how they did it before indoor plumbing only a few hundred years ago :P

  • Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever met someone with teeth as perfect as everyone in this game has, and we're not years into the apocalypse.

I only wear contacts, my vision is already shit and it's deteriorating at a rapid rate. I would be fucked.

  • Then you don't make it past the first few months.

So the question of what are you gonna do 5 years in is moot, you're already dead.

Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotics if you lack that stuff and get infected.

Even if you scratch yourself a bit it's likely you'll get infected if you don't use medicine.

That is in no way true. My wife get minor cuts and scrapes all the time and they just heal, no disinfectant needed. Minor wounds rarely infect.

Are you familiar with history? Shelter and clothing are relatively recent inventions. We used to live outdoors, in the rain and cold etc. We did just fine. People are not nearly as fragile as you think they are.

Course, life expectancy would be like, 20 years max.

  • No. You need clean water, you boil it. It's not difficult at all to get water you can use.
