I'm in the middle; I liked the Solo Javi bits, but I think the story would be stronger without the forced connections to the comics and Seasons 1/2. Most people dislike the game because of the small amount of time you play as Clem, but I actually would like it if they went all in on Javi. Granted, I'd also like if they used a more original storyline instead of repeating Season 2 and Michonne where X group of friendly protagonist survivors gets crossed with Y group of evil antagonist survivors with a small touch of moral ambiguity to spice things up.
Season 1 had a good amount of original ideas and storylines, and I'd like it if Telltale had used more original ideas for Season 2, Michonne, and New Frontier in that same way.

I'm sure if you want to kill people you dislike, you can play Counter Strike or any other FPS, but in TT games you play as a character that is already made and have its own way of reacting to situations.
Like it would be quite out of a character if a 11 yo girl (raised by reasonable and generally good people) started to kill everyone on sight just because the player commands her so, for example to grab a crowbar and bash Carver's head on her own. The game has already too many unrealistic moments, let's not make it worse.

I mean the connections to the comics are relatively minor as of now. Jesus really didn't have that big a role, at least in Episode 2, so I think waiting till Episode 3 would be better for a fuller judgement (which judging by the title card should answer that).

Part of the problem of the Walking Dead is that the formula you mentioned is essentially everything, because as the theme of the story goes, humans are the real walking dead. There are few storylines that can incorporate the action and the drama without that, and of those storylines, a bunch of already been done, for example a disease outbreak (which, actually would probably work out in a game), zombie herds, bad storms, and the like. Season 1 even had this, with the St. Johns, the Save-Lot Bandits, arguably the Stranger (who I suppose is different). Conflict with other humans, especially at this point in the outbreak, is kind of expected.
But how that conflict could be improved is what we really should be asking here. I think what they should done is improve on that basic formula, making that more original. The branding, that's pretty original, the familial relations between the leader and brother aren't so but you know, it's different, whatever concept of justice the New Frontier has will probably be original. But is originality really the best thing? You can a pretty good argument that being original doesn't necessarily mean it will be better.
We're still on two episodes in. Personally, I think everyone should wait until at least Episode 3 or 4 before calling this season downright horrible, because since Episode 1 and 2 were released together, no feedback was incorporated to Episode 2 which 3 and 4 will have to pick up on. Maybe Telltale has an ace up there sleeve that we all jumped the gun and didn't think of.

If they made Clem a Borderlands character headshoting dudes for fun, they might as well make a game in which Clementine The Fruit and her best friend Lee-chee try to escape from the bad blenders ready to slice them up into a fruit salad.

I think ANF probably would have worked better if they just focused 100% on Javi and the New Story aswell. Then again, it also suffers from taking inspiration from Michonne. In my opinion, Michonne was a pretty bad game, there wasnt really a purpose to it at all and nothing really happened, that plus annoying kids popping up. So the fact that they did alot of copy and pasting with coming across and evil group, a hostage situation that leads to violence no matter what, and a character getting shot in the back of the head for shock value all over again really got me mad.
Another thing. Season 3 uses things that were dropped for Season 1 and season 2 for the purpose of "it didnt feel right and didnt work" and its show in season 3 with the things that shouldnt be in it because it doesnt work.
Javier has a family. He cares about them, however, us? Not so much. We can like the character but he has a much stronger bond to them than the player. For example, Javi likes Gabe, but a fair majority doesnt. It makes a disconnection, kinda like how they dropped Lee being Clem's brother because having a pre established relationship didnt work for bonding with the character like they wanted. Season 2 also had plans for Kenny to be the more big bad, but because we knew him it would be drama of "is he really that bad, blah blah blah, and they decided to drop that because it wouldnt work well. And now flashforward to season 3 where the big bad is someone we know and we are going to need to see if they really are that bad blah blah blah...

THANK YOU Murmie22, I have been wanting to say this for days, BUT PLEASE MAKE MORE NEW MUSIC, I hate the fact they reuse it because it takes away from the original score in it's respective scene, Such as the Music used for Carver's "face-off" with Kenny, and it's reuse in EP 4 where Kenny and Clem find Luke and Jane.
I noticed What's in season 3 there is no new music. It's just ost's was taken from previous seasons.

Length time and the killing of Kenny/Jane totally erasing the choices matter factor. I couldn't care less about Clem's playable screen time.
