Would Clementine Still Turn Out Like She Did In New Frontier If Things Were Different?

So last night I was reviewing my fanfic rewrite I did ages ago for TWD S2 and considering resuming it and continue with TNF afterwards. I wanted in my rewrite to have more of the cast survive and continue with TNF since I like some of the concepts they were trying out, most of all how Clem turned out and then I started to consider something. One of the questions that came into mind was this.

"Would Clementine really still turn out the way she is in New Frontier if she had more than just one other person of the group survive and no one died up until this next installment?"

When we look at Clem this season -- while she can still show her compassionate side, she has this cold, hardened and very distant demeanor that's easily noticeable. You can see she's very nervous on becoming attached to people. This is somewhat foreshadowed in the second season, where it's very apparent that Clem is suffering from survivor's guilt (which wasn't very touched upon until just recently in a new shape and form; distanced and afraid of connecting with people).

I very much like this idea of the new Clem, the only problem is I have my doubts if she would become the way she is if everyone else besides AJ (assuming he's still alive at this point) didn't get killed off last season and in the flashbacks. We got this present Clem at the cost of everyone else's deaths. But is it still possible she can become the way she is if at least a few others of her group(s) survived up to the present or would she be a bit more different?

probably, the apocalypse is still a threat even with other people around.

  • Honestly, I think she would've become a hardened version of her season 2 counterpart, but not to the extent she is now. I still think it would've been wonderful if they went the comic route with keeping more people alive across multiple seasons, shaping Clem's character by having other people around long enough to leave a bigger impact. Imagine if Luke made it through all the way to the end, and then took Mariana's death in season 3? Clem would be crushed, and we as the audience would have even more of a reason to have beef with the NF.

Although she's probably been forced to learn new skills out of necessity since everyone else is gone, and she's definitely become more of a survivor, it would've been cool to see what could've happened if they were still around.

By the way, did you say you posted a story about it? I'd love to read it if that's cool :)

  • I think she would definitely be a happier person with Kenny, Omid, Christa, and/or anyone from the Cabin Group. She's probably going to break down at some point in ANF as a result of all of the suffering she's been put through. She has that Jane-like act going but she's just the same little girl from Season 2, we'll see it eventually.

  • I know this is pretty irrelevant but since you mentioned Luke, I've decided that I am 100% okay with his shitty season two death because it saved him from an even shittier season three flashback death.

Though I have to be straight with you, if he didn't get a shitty flashback death and the scenario you suggested happened, I would still be very angry and distraught.

Yeah, I've been having doubts too with NF Clem being possible if it was the other way, so I'm glad someone else feels the same. It's a shame though since as I mentioned I like the idea of this new Clem and she has a bigger range of emotions compared to S2 (she still had emotions though, just numbed from trauma.) Maybe it's possible she can still have a wider range of emotions if she's with people just she won't act exactly like NF Clem.

Yeah, it would've been great if more was alive/around, I kinda hated how S2 did the similar thing more or less (albeit Bonny/Mike just ditched us) and some deaths were.... ugh. Yeah. lol But that idea with Luke you have there would definitely be more of a holy shit moment, similar to the arrow scene in the comic/show and it would be sad to see.

I haven't posted it yet, it's just sitting in my laptop at the moment. I only managed to finish All That Remains, it's a soft rewrite where I fill a lot of things that I felt was missing and I gave Clem a little more wider range of emotions. As the episodes continue forward it gets drastically different though (A House Divided is part way done). I'll post it in the "Which Episode would you rewrite?" thread soon though, I'll let ya know in PM!

  • Clem is in survival mode; JSS. And right now she has closed herself off. I do think AJ is still alive. I don't think he's in Richmond, possibly he was taken away by those fleeing from TNF. So she's going to have to go off and find him (possibly). Gabe might be to her how Carl is to Enid. He might be the key that may open her back up.

  • I love clem, but I agree that she seems so cold now.I think if she gets to see AJ (if he is still alive) she will be able to bring the sweetness of s1 clem back. I also believe once she opens up, Gabe might be a good platonic friend. He seems kind of weak but he's trying to be stronger so they seem that they will be able to help each other. I think when she sees AJ again she will regain hope.

  • I agree, I think Clem has kept her grief and her pain hidden from those that she doesn't know so that they will see her as someone to not mess with, and don't see her emotional vulnerability. If AJ turns out to be alive, I think that she will be more happier and not as distant and hardened. I also agree that Clem and Gabe could actually be good friends, but I do NOT ship them as a romantic couple.

  • It should've been a process of building an independent character.

S1: meet Clem, bond with her, sacrifice yourself for a girl you care about.

S2: shape your Clementine and decide what type of survivor she'll be.

S3: see your Clem as a NPC, as a result of your development throughout the series.

  • That's an interesting idea, like seeing what would happen if you did all the scumbag options... Im not sure, I like Clem as a playable character, but that idea is intruiging.
