He's bland. He's not complex or captivating or even really charming. The reason Lee worked as the main character is because he was those thi… morengs. He's someone we meet on his way to prison for murder yet through Clementine be redeems himself becoming what at first glance is a criminal turned parental figure. I know he went through this character change throughout the apocalypse but we're just meeting Javier and his family 4 years after the apocalypse. We've had a few flashbacks in absence of developing any character. He's just a pretty boy good guy. There's no real range of personality you can experiment or have fun with which for right now makes him boring
You know the writers likely have little to do with gameplay, right?
And if there's one thing I can say about Javier, it's that I'm glad he's not just Luke 2.0: He has his actual step-family to look after, he doesn't have much guile in conflict, he's actually consistently in the spotlight, and as far as I can tell, he doesn't have a hero complex driving how he carries himself. I get that you specifically mean he's another supposedly good looking who seems bland compared to Clementine, but it's not the same deal as with Luke.
Javi is really like Luke 2.0
Bland, normal, uninteresting, a chick magnet for some reason.
I would've rather preferred if TTg got good writers for Clem so that we play as her.

Well... technically we are "playing" an interactive movie, so writers do affect the choice making & dialogue options in this game.
Ya got me there, partner.
He does have some key traits in common with Luke, he's an improved model
If you mean the vague concept "Cool older guy who teams up with Clementine", then maybe. We're not quite there yet either way and one would hope he isn't defined by how he measures to Luke.
Also, for better or worse, Molly and Jane are very different characters beyond the basic archetype.

unlike Molly 2.0.
Javier is a very underwhelming protagonist. Even his emotional moments like when he buried Mari came off incredibly cheesy. Even the minor 400 Days cast were more relatable and endearing, and we only had them for ~15 minutes each. And unlike Lee, we are really not getting to shape Javi's personality and relationships in a personal and engaging way. I know all Telltale games are ultimately on rails but this truly feels like everyone is playing the exact same character who is going to be on the same path no matter what.
Clementine just isn't complex or interesting enough to be protagonist
On that we can agree on. And I thought I was the only one who didn't find S2 Clementine's character compelling. Her emotions feel soft and dull. She's not the badass kid I would like to play as. In my opinion Lee was more of an emotional character then Clementine. Clementine's emotions and voice don't sound very meaningful when compared to Lee. I actually prefer her as a non-playable character like in S1 and S3 ANF. Now as for Javier, I like him more then Clementine and I'm glad he's a playable character. He's a well concerned family man who actually cares about his loved ones and tries his best to keep them alive more then himself. The choices that were given really do show how Javier reacts both physically and emotionally. When Javier was first announced I was excited about playing as him. Was I satisfied? Hell yeah I was. For me, Javier is on the same level as Lee.
He's about as compelling as leftovers for dinner. He gets the job done, but nothing about him stands out as memorable to me. I would have much rather had played as Clem again. You know the person I've spent years with and actually care about.
Should have been an playable side character and not the main character.
I wanted to both continue and conclude my Clem's story. So far these episodes are becoming a chore to complete.
Can't get into the story like I use to. First the show and now this. Sigh..
Hope Game of Thrones isn't fated to end up the same way.
I can't say i love him but i don't hate him ether, at the beginning i was more interested in meeting Clementine and finding out out what happened to her rather than Javier's story and once i did meet her i chose all the pro Clem choices and talked to her whenever possible.
As we are only two episodes in i feel it's way too early to judge yet but as of now i preferred playing as both Lee and Clementine over Javier.
Even though I love playing as Clem, I'm glad we get to play as a new protagonist. Javier is pretty cool so far, but I'd like to know more about him. It'd be cool if we could see the rest of his back story in the later episodes since there's not much to go off of.
I actually really like Javi. Sure he could use a bit more backstory, and I think that's probably coming up in later episodes, but overall he's a really charismatic, clever character. This is probably a very unpopular opinion but I prefer playing as Javi ALMOST as much as Lee. And so far imo it's the 2nd best game in the series, number one being s1.
Maybe in Episode 3, with the reintroduction of David and whatever the hell's planned for Gabe, TNF and Clementine, Javier can be vitalised as a character when all these elements come to play and cause some changes in character. Or maybe like Don't_Look_Back suggested, Javi could hold host to some darker secret other than 'gambling' (wut) that could come into play later. But I doubt it.
I think the fact that people praise Javier as one of ANF's most positive features is on it's own kind of worrying. He doesn't seem to be much more than Luke 2.0 and I think to hold him up to the likes of Lee and Clementine (as characters, not necessarily as protagonists) is jumping the gun a bit.

He's okay. I think he has a good design and his voice actor is great but I hate the family drama sillyiness. He's not an interesting character by himself and only works when he's around other people which is pretty lame, Lee was cool on his own and worked well with others but he didn't rely on having someone to play off of to be a good character. Same thing with Clem. He needs to be more fleshed out and they've had two episodes to do so and I'm just not seeing it.

Not a fan, he just comes across as a douche. "Come on Clem, you're really gonna steal my stuff I just stole from those guys?"
"Hah, you think Kate breaking a gift from your dead CO was bad, wait til you see how she breaks your bank out when she LEAVES YOUR ASS. Thanks for letting me stay at your house til I get my life straight btw."
Add in his terribly cliched back story, and its just nah.

Hallelujah, someone that doesn't worship the ground Clementine stands on, and gets why a lot of us just don't warm to her.

When it was announced, I was a part of the excited to view a new character club. I had hoped having Javi would resolve a lot of my top issues with Season 2 of grown adults endangering a child for funsies, and the lack of a leadership role/leadership conflict within the group dynamic we had with Season 1. I am no longer excited.
I guess I can in part blame the 'instant time-skip' that we're given in Javi's storyline. We're presented an instance where we skim over what could've been arguably the most intriguing portion of his character arc for the sake of aligning this story with a teenage Clem.It sets an entirely different tone, and presents us with plastic characters. There's no real desperation or sadness in the near musical montage of a van road trip with reefers. Van had to have been well stocked. No one looks like they've skipped a meal. This effect is made worse by the character of Gabe, who is depicted as a hot-headed teen, however this far into the zombie apocalypse neither he nor his sister display either a great deal of resourcefulness nor fear. One or the other would be expected.
There is no real emotion in this season, and when there is an opportunity for it we're steered to move on quickly like a bad action flick.
Javier isn't terrible, but perhaps just surrounded by crappy characters that mold his character into who he is. Just seems like a regular dude with a not so interesting back story stuck in the ZA. It's nice to play as a guy who can swing a heavy object every now and then and take a hit without feeling to bad for him, but I still think Clementine being the protagonist could have been more interesting.
I liked Javi when it was confirmed that he'd be one of the protagonists and that he would have heavy Latin influence. He also had an okay character design and a thing for sports (the latter being unlike our previous playable characters). Now, all he does is lead a boring and contrived story, only says "muertos" with a white VA, is pursuing two romances not consentingly, and his beard doesn't even look good, all while Clem takes the back seat without addressing any of the issues that plagued her writing in Season Two.
In short, I was looking forward to Clem and Javi being a well-written leading duo, but that doesn't seem to be happening.
He's not unbearably annoying or anything, but he is dull (duller than Luke) and that's a huge problem. His story so far is also extremely cliche. The whole prodigal son, Cain and Abel thing has been beaten to death. I don't want to be in another Shane/Lori/Rick situation here. I have no interest in Kate, but knowing Telltale, I'm going to be blamed anyway by David.

Not sure how having a heavy Latin influence is a thing, but I do agree his cringeworthy delivery is eyerolling. I don't even mind him being voiced by a white dude, but he clearly has no grasp on Spanish pronunciation. ROLL YOUR Rs. I barely even speak Spanish, but I've been around my family long enough to properly pronounce names and words in spanish, Christ. They gave this dude a script and told him to go with it.

I made a thread a while ago called Javier is such a breath of fresh air. That was a while ago though and I doubt I'd be able to find it so my explanation won't be as detailed.
What first drew me in to Javi was his personality. He seems so different from most Walking Dead characters (I said most so don't send me a bunch of character's names in an attempt to prove me wrong.) Despite events going on around him he seems happy. He's playful and almost always seems to be smiling (this is more true in episode 1 as ep2 is after Mari's death and the fall of Prescott so there isn't a lot of playful moments.) So the main thing is his personality, he's just a joy to play as.
I also really enjoy his relationship with David that I'm really excited to see more of. The two seen close, but clearly have their issues. I also enjoy the Javi and Kate romance, not much to it, I just enjoy the two characters together. Then there's Gabe. I really enjoy the relationship Javi has with his nephew. Gabe is lost and unsure what path to follow and Javi has to guide him and hopefully keep him on the right path.
Not very detailed so I imagine it won't be a very compelling explanation. Just remember this is my own interpretation of the character and may be different from yours. You'll probably notice that I didn't mention Javi's backstory about gambling and messing his life up. I do find it interesting and I like it, but we don't have a lot of detail on it so I don't want to give an actual comment on it yet.
EDIT: I found the thread I made and it turns out it isn't detailed at all. XD
I'm so used to my profile pic that I actually forgot how he looked like.
I refuse! It was a stubble, not a beard! Appreciate a clean-shaven Lee and his mighty urban cheek bones!
Well, I like him because he's a good guy. Basically it's all. He's kinda like a second Luke to me and I really hope we'll find out something about Javier that will make him seem to be a unique character.

Oh no, you can definitely have a lot more fun with him compared to Clementine in part because of that.
You know the writers likely have little to do with gameplay, right?

I hope Javier story arc moves away from his relationship with his family and instead begins to intersect with Clem's story arc
He's charming... But that's all. People say something about him being the new Luke, but I don't think so.
