Mariana's Cassette Player...

So if you've played or watched the first two episodes of ANF, then you know that Mariana had a cassette player and has been using it to drown out the sound from the rest of her family. But eventually she later dies and we get the option to decide whether or not we bury her with the cassette player (If you stayed with Clementine at the junkyard). Now this is very interesting and I don't think Telltale would add this for no reason. (But then again our choices don't really matter do they?) Anyway we get the option to give it to Gabe later on if we didn't bury Mariana with it Or still keep it. But then this raises another question. Why can we still keep it? But after seeing the trailer for episode 3, a question popped up in my mind.

Could we give it to David in episode 3?

Imagine his reaction! I don't know if anyone else has asked this question before but I brought it up in my post about how Ties That Bind Part Two could've been improved and I wanted to hear all your guy's thoughts about this. I really hope they let us do this because I would love to see David's reaction and it would also explain why we can keep it instead of give it to Gabe or bury it with Mariana. So what do you guys think? Is it possible that we can give it to David in episode 3? Or is Telltale just going to make the cassette player not mean anything if you gave it to Gabe or with Mariana?

  • Interesting...

  • If that's true, I kinda wish I had thought of that before I gave it to Gabe. Granted, I probably would've done that anyway considering it's his little sister and all, but that would be an interesting third/fourth alternative. Though maybe it'd be best if its possible for Gabe to give it to him instead.

Then again, would David even be able to make the connection between cassette player and Mariana?

That's actually a very good point. Gabe could still give it to David if you chose to give it to him instead of burying Mariana with it. Another good point you brought up is if David could make the connection. If Mariana had the cassette player before the walkers came then David will probably know about it since he has seen her using it before. But if she found it after the walkers came then David wouldn't know what it was. But Javi or Gabe would most likely tell him that it was her's. Maybe it could happen like this:

Javi takes out Mariana's cassette player and hands it to David.
    "What's this?" David asked.
    "It was Mariana's." Javi answered.
    "Where is she?" David asked.
Javi doesn't answer him and David starts to realise the answer.
    "She's dead." Gabe revealed.
"What?! How did this happen?! Who killed her?!" David asked infuriated.
"It was The New Frontier. They killed her." Javi answered.
David starts to make a face full of anger, a face full of hatred, a face full of evil.
David puts the cassette player in his pocket. He turns around and looks at some people from The New Frontier.
"Which one of you motherfuckers did it?! Which one of you killed Mariana?!" David asked.

Just writing that made me get even more hyped for how David is gonna react when he hears about Mariana. Hopefully they do let us give it to him. I know that you didn't ask for me to write a little dialogue there but I couldn't help myself.

  • It would be neat to give David the cassette player or have Gabe do it at least, as proof (besides your word) that Mariana is dead. The problem is that there's no build up to that. What I mean is we never saw David giving the cassette player to Mariana, nor do we see her using it in the only flashback Mariana and David are in together. So David seeing it in the present without Mariana there would mean nothing to David or at least it shouldn't, unless Telltale just want you to assume that the cassettes player and her have been connected before the the ZA hit.

  • My thought exactly.

  • I will give him,IN HIS GODDAMN GRAVE HOLE

  • Those were all very good points. They haven't really builded that up and they haven't shown her using it either. So most likely she found it in a place that Javi decided to check out after David left to take Yaya to the hospital. But I still feel like it will play a big role if you kept it because they give you the option to keep it. I know that the choices aren't really changing much in ANF but I still feel like Telltale is thinking of doing something with it. Why would they let us have the option If it doesn't matter in the end? Especially if we can still keep it and not give it to Gabe.

But there might be a way that David could've given the cassette player to Mariana. What I've noticed is that in the beginning of both of the Ties That Bind parts they show Javi's family before the Walkers showed up. Maybe they could start episode 3 with a flashback of David giving Mariana the cassette player and then going to the present where Javi or Gabe could give it to him if you didn't bury Mariana with it.

  • No problem, Bob!

  • I wouldn't give him the cassette player. David may do same thing Mariana did - drown out his surroundings!
Informing him that one NF member shot his daughter would be difficult task in such situation.

I personally chose to bury the cassette player with Mari. Felt like the appropriate thing to do. Hopefully other players can see the effect of either letting Gabe have it or keeping it still.

A similar concern that I have is being able to use the batteries that we could optionally give her. I chose not to because I wanted her spending time with Gabe and I thought i could use them later on... please dont forget us battery hoarders, Telltale!

I agree. Burying the cassette player with Mari is the appropriate thing to do. When I played it I also buried her with the cassette player. But I did see someone playing ANF and he was saying how he wanted to bury Mariana with it. But he was also saying that it could come into play later on so he decided to not bury her with it. I agree with him 100%, It has to come into play later on. If it didn't then why would they even give us the choice to keep it? They even let us keep it again if we chose not to give it to Gabe. They must've given us this choice for a reason. Hopefully Telltale gives us the option to give it to David if we keep it because I would love to see David's reaction to Mariana's cassette player.

  • They're in a desk drawer inside of the pudding shack. Right after Javi decides whether to stay the night or leave, you get another option to give the batteries to Mari or keep them.

Sorry, i forgot the batteries were determinant.

  • It would have more sense if there was the option to take David to Mariana's grave, but TT made the burial determinant, so hey, the cassette player it is.

  • Being funny cause I don't know.

  • Ah I see, you must be a comedian with that type of pure comedic excellence.

jk , it actually made me exhale a small gust of air from my nose in a moderately amused manner.

  • Thanks! I actually had to google a boy band from 2007 to make that joke.

  • Well that's the thing, I didn't give her the batteries and then buried her with the cassette player. So hopefully they give us an option to use it later on, but it might just disappear like a lot of other items in the past ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I feel old even though I was only 8 at the time.

  • Well, 2008 according to wikipedia, but whatever: they're a boy band, they have Hispanic last names, and they were broken in by the Disney Channel, so the joke works on multiple levels.

  • I thought that the Cassette Player would be important in the next episode. But then I remembered Nick's watch.

  • Didn't Clementine bury her even if you left?

  • Maybe, maybe not. Given that she shows up with Max and Badger right behind her(which was the second flag, btw), I kinda doubt it.

  • What did happen to the watch?. It's a valid question that goes unanswered.

Oh, I thought i watched an alternate playthrough where she says that she buried Mari herself and that it was peaceful. Perhaps I'm mistaken

You can give it to Nick If you took it at the house. After Nick kills Matthew he sits in front of the small station house across the bridge. If you talk to him he asks "What time is it?" He then looks where his watch should be and it isn't there. He says that Pete gave it to him and that he forgot it. If you took it you have the option to give it to him. He thanks you and then says that he'll talk to the others. (Probably about Matthew and why he killed him)

  • Yeah that could happen. Items in Telltale games are funny. They usually get the one use and then forgotten about. So it could be leaving the cassette player or giving it to Gabe could be it's one and done. That said, i will admit there is a lot of focus revolving around this item compared to other items in their games.

Those were all very good points. They haven't really builded that up and they haven't shown her using it either. So most likely she found it

  • If there's no evidence against it, I'd like to have the headcanon that she did.

Didn't Clementine bury her even if you left?

  • Maybe. Assuming the New Frontier show up around the same time either way, she might've tried to bury her but had to hit the road when she saw the truck coming.
