The Old Walking Dead Is Back!!!

Without any spoilers, I watched Episode 3 on Youtube for A New Frontier and this one is actually good! A perfect length of an episode, good story-telling, and you actually feel there is a reason for everything...not just for 'plot-device'. A good set of little twists and they also use some nostalgic music that almost made me tear a bit (okay maybe exaggerating a little bit, but it definitely put a smile on my face) Get excited guys, this is gonna be one hack of a ride :D

  • The best I can say at this point is I hope it is fantastic.

  • Kind of how I feel a little bit too. It's a definite step in the right direction. I feel like Episode 3 is more like Classic season 1 than most of season 2 was.

  • That's great! I'm waiting for the official release date, and I can't wait. :D

  • If you say so.

  • How low were your expectations exactly?

  • This'll never be as good as S1 and S2
I mean no hubs and LESS CLEM?! WTF

How low were your expectations exactly?

  • My expectations was the same from EP1&2 after playing it.

How low were your expectations exactly?

  • The only problem with this episode is a lack of gameplay. I remember just one 2 minutes long gameplay during which you had direct control over Javi, nothing else

  • I suppose I am lucky in the sense that I don't really mind if there is a lack of the "gameplay" sections where it acts more like a game than an interactive story. I am a huge gamer, but Telltale can sometimes make their action scenes feel lacking in places, which is why I just prefer the dialogue and making decisions etc.

  • I guess I'm in a minority that thought season 2 had major problems and felt little to nothing like Season one or the same writing style. It felt like characters died only for shock value and were never developed in the slightest and in the end, none of it really mattered apart from AJ. I usually refer to season 1 as the peak of greatness in this franchise. It's been consistently downhill since then.

Two years ago... you'd have had a lot more company.

S2 was constantly criticised for these things but now with S3 out there, suddenly S2 wasn't that bad after all :/

I was here lol. That's why I'm confused as f*ck...People were saying the same stuff they're saying about ANF. The length of the episodes, characters dying too early, yada yada. I think it's looked back upon fondly because Clementine was the central focus. I had problems with her as a protagonist in season 2 as well because I think she was uncharacteristically bland.

  • I think people are just frustrated that the errors that were made in S2 seem to have been continued into S3 thus far, as if Telltale had not listened to the feedback. I must admit, the episode length is ridiculous compared to what it was.

Clem has much more personality to her this season, but Telltale has offset that by making her the same for everyone, even though there are 5 endings to S2.

I do agree though that nostalgia could play a role in this too.

  • I agree that Season 1 definitely has been the best, and to me it is the best Telltale game so far, but I feel it is difficult to live up to it now that we have felt that emotional journey. I don't dislike Season 2 to the same standard as you although I still felt it was a down grade.

Part of me wishes that Sean Vanaman hadn't left because he done a great job as the lead writer of Season 1 and actually wrote 3 of the episodes in the season I believe, which were the 1st,3rd and 5th if I am remembering correctly. They also brought in Gary Whitta for guidance and he wrote the 4th episode. I also had to double check but Mark Darin is still working for Telltale I think and he wrote "Starved For Help" which was an awesome episode. I hope he at least gets to write part of Episode 4 or 5.

  • Yeah I have numerous problems with ANF but I like it more than season 2 right now. I'm sure most people will disagree with me there but oh well.

I'm pissed off about the season 2 endings debacle that has happened with ANF and I half wonder if there were big internal issues at Telltale which has resulted in the departure of huge figures in the company. Episode 3 is the closest in tone and style I think to the original season. Although A House Divided and No Going Back are both fantastic episodes which deserve high praises.

I'm sure I'll have someone tell me why I'm wrong though lol

  • If that's true about the 3rd episode then I can't wait! I haven't played it yet :(

I thought the first two episodes of S2 showed great promise then it went off the rails a bit with a lack of direction. I hope the opposite is true with S3 in that, it lacks focus at the start, but once everything is set up it picks up the pace.

  • Yeah maybe it's just me but I'm really enjoying it again. I was really worried after episode 2 but I have more optimism now. It's not perfect and likely will never reach season 1 levels again but I do think it's getting better. I'm starting to like the characters a good bit as well. And I love pretty much every scene Clementine is involved with. I hope you end up liking it though. It's just a shame there's wrongs that can never be right-ed.

  • Sean had this perfect amount of realism in the way handled the story and I miss that. The story felt so organic and human and the characters all felt authentic. Even Lee who you're supposed to craft along the way felt like a real man you just happen to be able to step into the shoes of. I miss that deeply.

  • As low as 'even if I was given Season 3 for free, I wouldn't bother' xD but tbh it is in fact WAY better than ep 1 & 2

How low were your expectations exactly?

  • It's a slight improvement over the first two, but the same issues still exist such as very little Clem screentime.

I agree ANF is better than season 2. I like the people of the group more. I just hope Telltale won't kill off all the characters, and will build on a strong community for next seasons.

I hate Telltale killed nice characters like Christa, Omid and Luke from season 2. But I agree the story of Kenny and Jane is over.

I hope at least Clementine, Javier, Aj and Gabe survives at the end of this season.

  • Well yea, when you play something that takes the problems the previous game has and amps them up even further, the previous game looks a lot better by comparison. I mean, episode 2s "hubs" consisted of asking Conrad where Gabe is and then Javier saying whatever he wants at the gas station, because we don't even get and dialogue options when we speak to anyone there. Not to mention stepping back to take control of such a typically bland protagonist in an action game, Lee and Clementine were much more unique in terms of character and gameplay.

Two years ago... you'd have had a lot more company. S2 was constantly criticised for these things but now with S3 out there, suddenly S2 wasn't that bad after all

  • The problem with S2 is the 5 endings although a great concept, pushed TT in a tight spot due to the theory of The Butterfly Effect; "In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state", basically meaning that to do all the endings justice it would result in such a development workload that it might not please everyone when it comes to the actual plot of the next season (ANF), I believe that hype comes to play in this too in the sense that not everyone is satisfied with what they did to your chosen endings, because while TT have that job of continuing YOUR story they didn't want to put the 'meat of the sandwich' as it were at risk. The continuation of the endings being the bread in this analogy. (I apologise if that didn't make total sense - this is my first post).

I think people are just frustrated that the errors that were made in S2 seem to have been continued into S3 thus far, as if Telltale had not

  • Well I guess I am actually a bit wrong, maybe not as good as Season 1 & 2 but DEFINITELY an improvment over the garbage 1 & 2 episodes for ANF.

The old walking dead would have given us more opportunities to bond or hate Jesus, Tripp, Eleanor and Conrad if you saved him. We would have also gotten much more time to talk and interact with other members of New Frontier rather than just the main members. Whilst an improvement on season 3, this isn't even close to the old WD.

  • Agreed. Tripp is finally stepping up a little, though.

  • It's an improvement but nowhere near the first two seasons.

    • Still near to no gameplay
    • episodes still too short
    • no new iconic music
    • lack of detail (for example: always blurry backgrounds)
