I miss the old graphics

I'm sorry but I can't hold this back anymore. So many models look like **** and they are just not putting enough effort into the characters look beside a few. Will they ever go back to the old graphics?

I like the new graphics, but the old ones were SO much better. I'm with you.

  • I doubt they'll ever go back to the S1 graphics which I wouldn't expect them to. ANF graphics at times looks pretty good while other times looks pretty bad. Overall I think the new graphics are pretty good.

  • You said it brosephus!

  • The character models look better in Season 3 (except a few).. but the environment in Season 3 looks like crap compared to the first two seasons and even the Michonne-spinoff.

  • I think the new graphics look decent (love Clementines look in A New Frontier), but I definitely also miss the old, more cartoony artstyle, it gave the game alot of charm, and it makes it hold up alot better (IMO, although I dont care much about good graphics, theyre nice, but anything better than Half Life 2 is fine for me), since they are not trying to look as realistic, but trying to emulate a cartoon

    I like the old graphics.

    It had charm.

Now they look like they were dipped in baby oil... and the hair textures... ugh.

And I'm kind of guy who likes gameplay/story/uniqueness in games more than "muh graphics", who's gonna look at this 20 years later, and say, "at least the graphics were the only redeeming quality in this game"? But I think Ross [1:50] explains it better in his review series.

  • The old graphics were a fantastic nod to the comic series that started it all. It made the game feel more like a choose your own adventure graphic novel. The new graphics are more on par with more typical video games. Both have their charms, and while I do agree that in Episode 1&2 there were several opportunities to have done better with models from previous titles, the team was working with an entirely new engine at the time. With Episode 3's release, and going forward, I'm sure they'll be able to fine tune their new toy.

  • I agree with your sentiment on graphics, I have honestly not had any need for better graphics since Half Life 2, sure shiny graphics are cool, but I dont need them, in fact I think old games like Doom and Half Life (the original) has charm, and I like artstyles better than realistic graphics

  • Do you think these graphics were available back in 2012? i'm not being sarcastic or joking i'm actually wondering.. because like its not the best realistically but its still pretty good

  • Well, Mass Effect 3 was released in 2012, as well as Dishonored, both of which looks way better than A New Frontier IMO, not that I care too much about graphics

  • Yeah, the old graphics looked more comical.

The environments look cool in the new game but all of the characters look like they're made out of wax.

    Seriously. They reflect light.

  • Old comic-like graphic was part of TT's originality which initially got me to play the game. Now it's just a poorly made movie.

  • I'm fond of both. I like the higher fidelity of the newer models but I think it would be better suited for a more realistic franchise like Game of Thrones or something. In terms of games that are based of comics like The Walking Dead, I like the comic art style better.

It's kinda like GTA 4 vs GTA 5 argument.

You have a game with better graphics, but with really dubbed down gameplay comparing it to 4, and the community was bigger and passionate back then.

  • I don't see how any model looks bad. Personally I prefer what we have.

  • Alright besides those two and Edith. But honestly Jane's model isn't really "bad" it just looks drastically different from her S2 model. So much so that you can barely tell it's her.

  • For the most part, I like the graphic design in New Frontier. It's a blend of a more realistic look with comic-book features, the art style somewhat reminds me of Mark Bagley's, one of the artists who did Ultimate Spiderman.

On the other hand, I do miss the old look from the earlier entries a bit myself. I was just looking at Season 2 screenshots last night and its look is just appealing, even now. It's much more likened to Adlard's style to boot.

Both are pretty good for me.

  • oh shit you just got me thinking about how cool (and potentially creepy) ttgot season 2 is going to look

let's hope they don't kenny/jane the models of returning characters

  • I think ANF is more polished than the other walking dead seasons, but the jagged edges that make the characters look pixelated sometimes really bugs me with this game...

  • I really like the new models in ANF. I don't have anything against previous seasons (mainly out of sentimental value) but the new engine looks multitudes better, while remaining consistent with the art direction of the TWD comics.

Everything looks a lot more crisp now, and there's a greater potential for added detail- I'm fond of how Javier's face texture changes over time- though admittedly some characters do look a little plain (for example, Eleanor or Tripp). The hair still isn't perfect but it looks like they're trying to improve from the old engine, which is good to see. The beards look pretty bad though.

  • You know how the official screenshots always seem to look more polished and crisp then the actual in game shots? For example (https://s.candybanana.com/images/404f/the_walking_dead_game_series_season_two_3.jpg)

I know it's not the best comparison but I wonder if telltale would've been able to achieve that look from the first screenshot with their new engine. That to me is what I imagined how the graphics would evolve honestly.

  • I like both the old GFX TWD TT and New GFX of TWD, to be honest, the engine for me is amazing and works smoothly like butter on my PC.

  • actually most of the textures in the game are really low quality, they look better in the game because of how much the textures depend on the shaders

Jane model look cute some how

  • Will they ever go back to the old graphics?

    I hope not.

  • Yes, the purpose of the old graphics was to give sort of a comic book vibe to it. But now that's gone.

  • My experience was not like yours, your PC or console must've been terrible, I play all TT games on PC and I haven't experienced a single glitch or bug.

Will they ever go back to the old graphics? I hope not.

  • I highly doubt they'd go back when they only recently upgraded their engine.
I dont mind it but i do like the comic-like style they had going on.
the only thing i dont like is that alot of the times when its a close up, the backgrounds always blurred-sometimes its good but alot of the times, its meh

  • Sometimes zombies' animations will kinda skip around and have a rectangular collision box on them that discolors things. Pay attention to the "extras" in the hordes and you'll know what I'm speaking about. Also look at the background areas in the forest scenes, some vegitation looks like shit

  • The character models look better? Kenny Jane and Edith look better?

This has always annoyed me. I know they're promotional pictures and all but... look at this one with Eddie:

    enter image description here

Look at his arm/clothes. They are much higher resolution than in game, his body casts a shadow and the lighting is so much better in the screenshot. This is on max settings PC.

Telltale aren't the only ones who do this (hi Ubisoft) but it makes me wish they offered a high resolution patch or something.

  • No need for the animosity, I was asking your opinion on their models, smh.

  • There was no need to ask an unnecessary question which was already answered in my original post.
