How bad is the TV series now?

Season 7 of The Walking Dead has been by far the worst season to date as it has ditched realism and tense constructed drama and replaced it with lazy writing, bad CGI, rushed cheap plots and nursery rhyme type characters like a man with a tiger who speaks Shakespearean, a group of weird trash people who make no sense whatsoever and Negan who the TV series have made into a typical cliché pantomime villain who is poorly acted out by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in my opinion.

Just look at these two example comparisons that show how downhill the TV show has gone since its early days:

Season Seven:

you realize people have shit on the show since season two, and often point to season two as the worst due being a slog pacing-wise, dragging out like two issues worth of story to an entire season and taking place almost entirely on a farm because of budget cuts?

Oh, spending half a season looking for Sophia only for it to turn out "JK she was dead all along lol"

    good stuff, amirite?

  • I still love the show, Season 8 will be incredible.

  • Just watched the episode where Carl almost got killed. It was utter garbage and can't get over how stupid Carl looks with that hat lol.

  • not the hair? that fucking hair has gone too far.

  • Second season of the TV show did have some of the strongest dialogue added with decent character development. Yeah still was mostly boring until the Randal prisoner situation started up.

  • Yeah you were always right Shane. You should have made it until the present day walking dead instead of Carol. Would of taught those saviours a thing or two.

  • I stopped watching around when Beth died

The TV show isn't bad. There are opinions and opinions.

  • For someone who hates the show so much, you sure are obsessed with it.

  • Yeah, this season I just kept waiting for something to happen. Then, it was over.

  • The whole idea behind TWD is trying to make realistic characters and stories in a world with zombies.

S1 and S2 did this well (I thought S2 was fine tbh). Then it quickly went off the rails starting in S3 with a very steep downhill slope.

I started souring on it in S3 when random prisoner that we just saw trying to kill a walker by punching it in the stomach, miraculously managed to escape an enclosed area with walkers, escape the prison entirely unscathed, managed to HUNT AND KILL a deer with no weapons or tools to start with THAT NIGHT, return THE NEXT DAY with said deer but managing to evade walkers while dragging around AN ENTIRE DEER.

The final straw for me was in S5 I think, where Darrell and that gay guy open up that trap at some cannery. It was such a ridiculous over the top trap where about 20 walkers poured out of a truck and like 100+ poured out of everywhere else, it was like Rube Goldberg machine. Then somehow they escape into a random car with a message that said "bad people coming" in it. Like what? Did the people leaving the note fall into the trap, somehow manage to escape these horrible people, then decided to be good samaritans, go back to the trap they fell into and leave a note in a random car assuming that it would be the one the next people fell into?

I mean, these events just started becoming so common place i just cant stand watching anymore.

  • I liked the season finale! Best ep this season. You could tell they were saving their CGI budget for that Shiva scene HAHA

And I do like Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the most part. I think he's doing a great job with what they've given him as Negan (much of which is directly from the comics, though they did had to get rid of some stuff that made Negan very Negan...like his f-bombs.) Negan is such an outlandish character, it's very hard to get him right. But I do think JDM will have plenty of time during season 8 (and, spoiler alert, beyond) to get his character right.

Side note, I really hated season 2. I hated the pacing and the various forgettable plots and it all just led to absolutely nowhere. The farm was only like a few issues in the comics, but they decided to stretch that into an entire SEASON. AN ENTIRE SEASON ON A FARM IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. The prison was such an interesting place because of the inmates, the Governor nearby, the sickness that spread in s4, just the general atmosphere (trapped, dark); meanwhile, every episode on the farm just seemed to melt together and nothing seemed to happen whatsoever until the whole Sophia reveal and the thing with that guy they captured. I literally don't even remember most of the season.

I definitely don't think the show has been as bad as it was during season 2. Season 7 was slow, but nowhere near as panned by the fans as season 2 and you knew it was building up to an all out war (zing!) with the Saviors. I really do love the world building that has been happening since season 6: I love King Ezekiel (and Jerry...the true homie) because as extra as he acts, he's a kind dude and a great counterpart to Carol and Rick. I hope they treat him better than in the comics... Also gotta love Maggie stepping into her leadership role.

  • I actually quit the show to be honest unless I hear that it changes back to how it was for the first half of this season. My issue with it is that things seem WAY too fast to change in the favor of Rick's group. Negan & The Saviors should have stomped Rick's group down to nothing for at least one full season. Really defeat them since they have been on a winning streak (sort of) by standing their ground against all opposing groups. But instead we only get several seasons of that then it's right back to Rick and the others being too confident and willing to fight back. I feel like they haven't learned their lesson, and that defeats the whole purpose of them going through that tragedy of losing Abraham and Glenn. Carl is still Carl, Rick is still Rick, Daryl is still Daryl, Rosita etc. The second half of this season has too much fan service, and things changed way too fast. The scene that made me rage quit on this season was when Tara took the group to that women only group to take their guns, and the leader's granddaughter knocked her out. I feel like ranting forever on how disappointed I am with this season, but I'll stop myself. Gotta say though, Negan is always a pleasure to see on screen.

  • Negan is the only reason to keep watching tbh. The last "epic battle" almost made puke. Besides the obvious setup for a last minute heroic safe of Carl, you mean to tell me that not a single fucking main character died while standing out in the open like a bunch of idiots with bullets flying all around them!?

  • I love the show, and while I agree Season 7 may be the weakest one yet, it's still miles better than ANF. (I do think S1 and S2 of the game are better than the show) Season 7 has been completely preparative for the war to come, which, if they play their cards right, might be the best season yet. My favorite seasons so far are 4, 5 and 6.

  • I can't get enough of Ezekiel. He's so damn cool!

I liked the season finale! Best ep this season. You could tell they were saving their CGI budget for that Shiva scene HAHA And I do like

  • I've read comments and I'm gonna say the opposite... I absolutely dislike Negan's character and I can't stand watching him onscreen. For me he's the same as Ivar from Vikings, the actor just doesn't fit and even though Negan had one moment he managed to terrify me, most of the time he's just annoying me with his presence. I haven't seen the last season and while I want to know how Rick is doing, the thought of Negan doing his yoga, swaying the bat and threatening everything makes me sick.

  • Yeah the show is for tweens and women ranging from 50-65 years, just look at the comments on the Facebook page defending the slow pacing, shit plot and rioting if Daryl dies..I used to like the walking dead but that's when I was a tween (I'm 16 now)but then I started watching actual good shows like Fargo ,Breaking bad,Legion,Daredevil,Homeland,Band of brothers,Billions,Riverdale and that's just to name a few.I could never go back to twd's filler bullshit after that.I have a friend who loves TWD and guess what?THE ONLY SHOW HE WATCHES IS THE WALKING DEAD.He can't afford to get Netflix so I get tu watch what you can.In the end,I'd say it's good background noise when you're on your phone or absolutely bored.

  • Also,TV Negan is a disgrace.I blame the network and the writers for downgrading his language but hey, bashing skulls is alright but don't sware mmmmkay?

Yeah the show is for tweens and women ranging from 50-65 years, just look at the comments on the Facebook page defending the slow pacing, shit

  • I don't fit into those narrow categories of yours and I watch a lot of "good shows", some of which you mentioned. So clearly the show is not for you or fans who are always going on about "filler. So, you're argument is a bit flawed.

Yeah the show is for tweens and women ranging from 50-65 years, just look at the comments on the Facebook page defending the slow pacing, shit

  • Negan did stomp Rick though. They almost kill him every time he rebels. Only now with every community helping does it look like Rick even stands a chance.

Season 1-3 solid enough,HUGE dip in season 4 with some of the boringest episodes ever where they were all in the prison not doing much. Man if I ever have sleep problems i'm putting those eps on as a potential cure. Season 5 - decent enough reovery, season 6 was complete garbage and the start of the problems that OP mentioned amongst others. Season 7 is pretty bad compared to what the show once was but can be entertaining if you lower your expectations.

  • I actually felt Season 2 was the best. It was my favourite. The show doesn't need tons of action to be good. I liked the slow pace.
Episodes didn't feel like fillers like they do these days and we saw great character development with Shane and the other characters. I felt after Season 3 the series hasn't been as good but i'll always stay loyal

Atleast there was the trade off of Carol actually getting developed because of Sophia s death unlike in the comics where Sophia lived and Carol commited suicide after wanting to date Lori and Rick at the same time.

  • Same. I still think Shane was one of the best-developed antagonists in the entire show. Watching his psyche slowly dissolving over the course of those first two seasons was so refreshing, and given the state of where we are now, it kind of feels like something's missing.

  • Yes! And we started seeing Daryl changing from who he was in season 1, his growing relationship with Carol, the pregnancy story with Lori and Glenn/Maggie getting together. It was a really good season. I preferred it to these days. At least back then we could get attached to the characters on the show. Nowadays there are just far too many characters to keep track of with all these new communities and such. How am i supposed to care about guys like Tobin, Heath or Aaron's boyfriend when they only get 2 seconds of airtime on the odd occasion? Also dedicating whole episodes to a few characters is not the best thing when they instead should be cutting between scenes.

I'll always watch the series though. I just enjoyed the show more in the past

I enjoyed Season 7, I'm a little afraid for Season 8 though, it could just be the same thing, trying to kill Negan and having this slothed out for the next sixteen episodes or so. Hopefully they don't go back to Season 2 syndrome's of an extremely slow pacing. Also I want to know what happened to a few characters, Heath is particular. Dwight has me really interested and his character is fleshed out so well done.

  • Watching season 7 was almost like a chore I had to complete every Sunday, it was by far the worst season yet.

  • Listen dude or madam you can disagree that's fine but there really is no need for sarcasm because you didn't like what I said. Show me at least some respect for my opinion please!

The "generic background character's" as you put them, Jimmy and Patricia yes granted they did only exist to die in the finale but when has there ever not been a set of characters that have existed just to die immediately or for dramatic/plot reasons? Btw Lori didn't tell Rick to kill him, she told him what Shane had done to Otis and that he was dangerous. Nothing more so naturally she was surprised when he did.

Beth was a background character that season and look how she she eventually grew as a character. We got to see a sensitive storyline where she wanted to commit suicide which i felt was an important thing to show on screen. Otis died so we could see the beginning of change in Shane which led him to be the main antagonist of Season 2. I liked the storyline when the group were trying to decide what to do with Randall, kill him or let him go, Dale believing they will lose their humanity by killing him. As i previously said, we saw a change in Daryl from who he was in season 1, he grew closer to Carol, Maggie and Glenn started caring for each other. I really liked the feeling that Rick and the gang felt as though they could settle on Hershel's beautiful farm and make a life for everyone. Hershel and his family eventually came to realise that walkers aren't sick people. Putting the walkers in the barn was interesting because it gave me the sense of feeling that the group could be in serious danger.
My first thought when seeing that was that Hershel's family were going to kill the group one by one or something (i never read the comics so I didn't know how the characters would turn out). I also still think to this day that Dale's death is one of the saddest losses to the group and was the first time whilst watching the show that i cried. I felt the acting by everyone was superb during that scene.

My point in all this is that I enjoyed this season a lot more than some of the later seasons and that's all that matters, not what you or others think and that goes both ways.
